Cozy Christmas #1

Lady Cavendish’s Christmas Caper

Rate this book
Lady Cavendish firmly believes that she's only a lady in name. All of her friends call her Charlie. She’s convinced that the name Charlotte is too sophisticated and borders on being painfully self-assured. Lately, nothing about Charlie's life bolsters her confidence. In fact, she has absolutely no idea what she's doing...

Charlie has until next Christmas to find a priceless missing art piece that’s the only thing standing between her and her inheritance. The cozy British town is hiding more than just the location of the noteworthy artwork. Charlie’s late grandmother wrote that she would only receive the castle and all its treasures after successfully finding the tactfully hidden artwork. As the clock moves closer to the deadline, it will take a Christmas miracle to help Charlie earn her inheritance and keep her wonderful new home.

Eager to explore Haversham, Charlie heads out sightseeing. It isn’t long until a flat tire leaves her stranded outside of the local tavern where a tall brooding stranger lends her a helping hand. Intrigued, Charlie proposes an innocent little wager. One harmless bet leads to another and soon she’s agreed to host a Christmas Eve party at the castle. Unwilling to admit defeat, she takes the challenge in stride, but will the town’s sleepy secrets come to light just in time to foil the holiday spirit?

I thought the story line was OK, but it was like the author was always holding some information back from the reader. And the English characters newer sounded English. Oh, and if Charli really lived in a cabin in Montana, I’m pretty sure she has seen an animal bigger than a boar.

This is a book that I believe could be really good. I love the idea, but I feel it needs, even for the cozy genre, some depth and focus. Without giving spoilers, there were aspects I would have either removed or given more of a story and some inconsistencies that I would smooth out. The story reads, to me, like it was written by someone who loves writing but is perhaps not terribly experienced with writing, which is perfectly fine, and honestly wonderful, in that to do something simply for the love of it is one of the most wonderful things to do.

"Lady Cavendish's Christmas Caper" by Camille Cabrera could be the start of a cozy mystery series that just happened to start out a bit more of a cozy romance with a hint of cozy mystery. I don't typically do romances but this one was very cozy with more of a feel that we were getting to know how the characters met and fell in love while also trying to figure out the scavenger hunt Charlie's grandmother left her.

There was a death but that wasn't the focus of the story. That also resolved super cozy like. Over all a cozy modern Christmas time story.

Always a pleasure to get a behind the curtain look at Ms. Cabrera’s work! She had me hooked from the first chapter with all of that comedy and chaos. I can’t believe she’s so young to have created ANOTHER cozy mystery romance. Loved the ending of this book and can’t wait for more!

Lady Cavendish’s Christmas Caper by Camille Cabrera

After receiving a letter in Montana, Charlie finds herself in front of lawyers reading her the last will and testament of her beloved grandmother. Turns out, her grandmother held the title of Lady Cavendish and owned a castle 🏰 in the village of Haversham, only there’s a catch, Charlie has to find the hidden artwork 🖼️ before the end of the year in order to inherit the castle. Introvert Charlie spends a good 10 months trying to find the art without much luck and not wandering out into the village. Until one fateful night, circumstances lead her to the local tavern and she meets Nick. A story full of mysterious stories and the Christmas spirit 🎄❄️🧶🐗, this book is fun for someone looking for a little holiday mystery.

Things I ❤️ about the book:
🎄 The way the author described the winter time in Haversham, made me want to pack my bag and find myself a castle in a quaint little British town to spend the holidays in.
🎄 Loved how Charlie finds connections with the village and her late grandmother and how she eventually finds herself.
🎄 The snowy Christmas and the exploration of the castle.

Things I 🥵 about the book:
🎄 The book felt quite abrupt at certain places. At some points, it felt slow yet in some parts, it felt as though I skipped a page.
🎄 The chemistry between Charlie and Nick felt almost platonic. I mean I was reading the words written by the author but it was hard to believe them.
🎄 Overall I believe it could’ve been an amazing read however, the author just missed the mark for me.

If you’re looking for a cozy Christmas book to curl up with then look no further than Lady Cavendish’s Christmas Caper by Camille Carbrera. Follow Charlie who has inherited her grandmother’s mysterious castle in a quaint British town, although there is a catch, this inheritance comes with strings attached! Charlie must locate a priceless piece of art hidden within the castle in the next 12 months to keep her inheritance. What follows is a Christmastime adventure filled with sweet friendships, a handsome stranger and a time crunch that will leave you on the edge of your seat. Will Charlie find this priceless art piece in time or will this queen of the castle have no castle at all? You’ll just have to snuggle up and read Lady Cavendish’s Christmas Caper to find out!

I really enjoyed reading this book, you can tell Carbrera put a lot of time and thought into her characters and plot. I enjoy a mystery book when you assume it will end up one way but completely takes you by surprise in the end. The narrative was exciting and I found myself finishing the book in a day. The additive of it being around Christmas time added to its coziness and made it overall a cheerful read in the light of my own Christmas tree.

I give Lady Cavendish’s Christmas Caper by Camille Carbrera 4/5 stars. A lovely fun read that will have you in the Christmas spirit in no time. This book is available now!

Charlie (Charlotte) Cavendish receives a letter all the way from the UK.
It's a letter requesting her to come for the reading of her grandmother's will.
There are several surprises in store for Charlie, including that she now has a Title and her Grandmother is a lot richer than Charlie ever believed.
Charlie learns that before she can actually inherit her grandmother's estate, there are conditions that has to be fulfilled, and she only has one year to accomplish it.

Pro's:
Developed characters, a solid plotline, and a good bit of humor.
Con's:
While there was a death in the story, it really wasn't integral to the story,
and every time it was brought up, just made it awkward and distracting to the story.
Rather than a Cozy Mystery, this is more of a Chicklit story or a women's fiction story.
It's closer to a Hallmark type story than anything else.

A Slow Start

This story takes a long time to get going and then still moves slowly. Charlie is not very likable at first and her quirks are never explained. There doesn’t seem to be much reason for her to be the way she is. I like the way the story itself develops and enjoyed Mrs Wright and Petey, even though his relationship with Charlie’s grandmother is never explained. I found a lot of the sentence structure and word choices odd. There’s no indication through spelling or grammar that the author is writing from a British perspective, but it doesn’t sound American either. I don’t know whether I would search for another book by Ms. Cabrera.

Lazy, superficial fluff

This book is a fluff piece written by someone who has never been to the UK or met a British person. The story is fine but predictable. So many things make absolutely no sense and the characters are two-dimensional with superficial backgrounds that could have actually made for an interesting story if the author had bothered to develop them. It gets two stars because it’s an easy (if boring) read. I’ve seen better writing on fanfiction.net, so if your expectations are very low you’ll enjoy this.

I enjoyed reading Lady Cavendish's Christmas Caper in December. Charlotte "Charlie" Cavendish's grandmother has died. According to her will, Charlie will inherit her castle and all its treasures once she can find a hidden work of art. But she only has until Christmas. So Charlie leaves her cabin in Montana and heads to Haversham. Charlie pretty much keeps to herself while looking everywhere for the work of art. Then circumstances cause her to host a Christmas Eve party at the castle. This book was fun to read. I liked the three main characters and their interactions.

I always read at least 3 chapters of a book to give it a fair shot. If they are short chapters, I read 4. The concept of this story had me excited to read it but I simply couldn’t get into it. The character’s personality was all over the place and went from no confidence to doing or saying things only a very confident person would. It also didn’t make sense, at all, that she would not have ever been told about her family or been interested enough to check it out herself.

mystery with a deadline

Charlie was quite the character. Quiet, brave, scared and sweet. She was flowing like a river not sure what she should do. Trying to solve the mystery her grandmother left her she began to find herself. A sweet story.

Sweet, enchanting (not in a paranormal way) and with a bit of mystery.

Charlie is in a rut, she needed to get a better paying job. What she did not expect is to inherit a castle. Meet Lady Charlotte Cavendish.

I'm not much if a reader but I wanted to give it a try this holiday season. It was a good book and let me escape from the world for about 3 hours. (I read slow). I liked the story and had a good time guessing the ending. Sometimes it's nice to think about something else.

I wasn’t expecting such an exciting cozy mystery. Cabrera definitely has a romantic style that effortlessly combines with mystery. I was always eager to start the next chapter and follow along with Charlie! Was rooting for Charlie from the start and the story was light in nature with a generous helping of intrigue. Perfect read for a snowy day.
