I don't normally read the backs of books as an indication of the contents, but this book was kind enough to just offer a bit of the actual text on its jacket. That alone was a perfect encapsulation of what I found inside. This is not only the funniest kids' book I've ever read, but at times it ranks among the funniest prose I've ever read! It made me laugh out loud many times, and when I was reading it to our (occasionally bewildered) four-year-old it could move me to tears of hilarity. Perhaps I only found it so funny because it reads like a classic cartoon (think the speaking Wile E. Coyote meets...Lewis Carroll's Alice in the real world), but it's a little surprising the book is nearly as old as the best of animation. I can't wait to read the first book!

Wolf is quite annoyed that Polly won’t fall for his tricks. All Wolf wants, really, is to eat Polly, but she manages to elude him every time.
You must read this one. It’s completely wonderful.

My 5 y/o loved this book. We read it together, cover to cover, in three days over half-term. She is desperate to read more stories about Polly and the Wolf!

I don't know why this book made me laugh so much. I know it's set in the 70s, but wow! It feels like this book's set in the modern day! Five stars for sure!

'Earplugs' he explained to the wondering Polly.
"Now I am all right.
Shan't be able to hear a word you say.
Now 'talk'. ..
Still without understanding Polly began
'Hoddley Poddley' puddle and frogs... Cats in blue jackets and dogs in red hats.
What will become of the mice and rats? ...
...Because I will be so clever then I'll get you before you can say Wolf Robinson. Polly went home and tied up her hair with her red ribbon... :):):)

'I was looking at the books and I stopped noticing you. When I get my nose into a good book,' the wolf went on dreamily, 'I get carried away.'
'Don't show off, Wolf,' Polly said. 'I know you can read, but I don't believe you ever get lost in a book unless it's a cookery book. When I was in your house there wasn't a book to be seen.'
'I get them all out of the library,' the wolf said hastily.
He is a TALKING WOLF, I think he's entitled to show off. Also, I want to live in a world where wolves visit the library and nobody bats an eyelid.

This was a really funny book. I liked the time when the wolf dyed himself the colour of a fox but then the rain washed off all the dye and Polly told the wolf it might have washed off his cleverness as well. It was also really funny when the wolf kidnapped Lucy and said "I am going to eat you up" and then Lucy bit him on the leg and ate all the food in the house! Ivor aged 5 and a half

These are the very best stories in the series; Polly and the Wolf have their most quirky and engaging exchanges.

This time, wolf tries to be cleverer than Polly, and actually comes up with pretty good ideas... dressing up like Santa, dying his fur like a fox, hypnotism...

My students and I loved the book. It reminded us of the roadrunner and coyote. Can't wait to read the other books.
