Atlantis beneath the Ice: The Fate of the Lost Continent

Rate this book
Scientific and mythological evidence that Antarctica was once Atlantis

• Reveals how the earth’s crust shifted in 9600 BCE, dragging Atlantis into the polar zone beneath miles of Antarctic ice
• Examines ancient yet highly accurate maps, including the Piri Reis map of 1513, which reveals a pre-glacial Antarctica
• Shows how myths of floods and disaster from around the world all point to a common source

In this completely revised and expanded edition of When the Sky Fell, Rand and Rose Flem-Ath show that 12,000 years ago vast areas of Antarctica were free from ice and home to the kingdom of Atlantis, a proposition that also elegantly solves the mysteries of ice ages and mass extinctions, the simultaneous worldwide rise of agriculture, and the source of devastating prehistoric climate change. Expanding upon Charles Hapgood’s theory of earth crust displacement, which was championed by Albert Einstein, they examine ancient yet highly accurate world maps, including the Piri Reis map of 1513, and show how the earth’s crust shifted in 9600 BCE, dragging Atlantis into the polar zone where it now lies beneath miles of Antarctic ice. From the Cherokee, Haida, and Okanagan of North America to the earliest records of Egypt, Iran, Mexico, and Japan, they reveal that ancient myths of floods, lost island paradises, and visits from advanced godlike peoples from all corners of the globe all point to the same worldwide catastrophe that resulted in Atlantis’s demise. The authors explain how the remaining Atlanteans, amid massive earthquakes and epic floods, evacuated and spread throughout the world, resulting in the birth of the first known civilizations.

Including rare material from the archives of Charles Hapgood, Albert Einstein, and Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Flem-Aths explain how an earth crust displacement could happen again in the future, perhaps in correspondence with high solar activity. With new scientific, genetic, and linguistic evidence in support of Antarctica as the location of long-lost Atlantis, this updated edition convincingly shows that Atlantis was not swallowed by the sea but was entombed beneath miles of polar ice.

For once, an actual thought provoking theory regarding the mythological island of Atlantis. I have to give the Flem-Ath's proverbial points, they provided a new way of looking at the possible location of the island and used some unconventional theories - or ones at this time are not widely accepted by scientific communities.

The foundation of their book comes from Charles Hapgood and his theory of crustal displacement. Admittedly, the crustal plates float on molten magma and according to Hapgood, some eleven thousand years ago, the crust shifted and moved the poles to their current location. They try to answer many of the questions that just won't be resolved with conventional theories be it the large vegetation eaters like mammoths that suddenly froze to death, to the open corridor between the North American glaciers where humanity migrated southward. Or was it northward from the South American continent since there are some human skeleton discoveries that don't fall within current orthodox science.

Even take a few ancient maps and re-orient them to fall into their theory. I must admit that their variant view away from the European-centric focus of the past several centuries is pretty convincing.

It would be easy to place the entire book as well as the existence of Atlantis in the category of 'pseudoscience' but myths and legends are usually based on an actual historical event or person. It's just how much the event and/or person has been built up to meet history and current expectations. Our idea of an advanced civilization would be vastly different from the idea of Roman Cicero or Sir Thomas More if they even considered it.

The writing flows quickly and for the most part, is easy to follow the theories and explanations. It's entertaining and certainly gives some options that only time will tell if true or not.

Oh, and where is it? Under the ice of Antarctica on the lesser Antarctica island.

This is the best book I've read about Earth Crust Displacement with a full explanation of how it works or might work. It explains the shift of poles and how it effected the ice sheets of the world. Atlantis seems to be secondary to the explanation of displacement.
Very good information.

This is "When The Sky Fell" just in a different order - nearly word for word.
I read this book and then read "When The Sky Fell" and was a little upset, eventually skimming over the last half of "WTSF" and coming to the conclusion that Rand Flem-Ath was merely trying to find a new collection of followers by playing a classic game of Jumble. I will admit, however, this version is put together better and flows much more gracefully than WTSF.

Yo, Randy: I would personally love to see this rewritten as a historical fiction, as seen through the eyes of a fictional sailor, traversing the [most probable] hidden truths, deflected later by a scientific wall of comfort-driven cowardice in the face of a descendent and heir to his great great grandfather's map collection... booyah! I'd read it (or assume the current pile of research to endure the task myself).

Having studied the topic of Atlantis from several different angles, I was intrigued to read this most direct and scientific inquiry. I was set to first read "Maps of the Ancient Sea Kings" by Charles Hapgood after twice reading Graham Hancock's "Underworld", but decided that it would be more beneficial to the understanding to read the Flem-Ath's work first.

It did not disappoint. Though scant undeniably specific evidence yet exists, these two authors scrape and tug at every single one of the known points and in the process connect many pertinent dots. Their foundations are the reports from Plato's "Timaeus" superimposed on the scientific proposal of Hapgood in the 1950's. Hapgood, with the blessing and support of Albert Einstein suggested that the entire mass of the earth's crust periodically shifts on the mantle, thus causing sudden and widespread climactic, geological and biological changes to the surface of the planet. What is astonishing are the implications of extremely rapid shifting of whole continents into or out of the polar regions and the instant impossibility of the continuity of life as usual in almost all areas of the planet.

Einstein was drawn to the theory because of its simplicity and its ability to holistically explain many unanswered problems in many fields such as archeology, anthropology, plate tectonics, mythology, geology, climatology, astronomy, historical cartography, satellite topography seismology and several others. By forwarding this discussion of Hapgood's, the authors have shown that all of the assets of these various disciplines can be used interactively to clarify the questions on the nature of the effects upon mankind 12,000 years ago and our probable survival response to a world turned chaotic.

The Flem-Aths paint a believable theory that the story of a highly advanced culture based in a not-so-mythical place called Atlantis might now be buried under miles of ice in the Antarctic. The only disappointment I have with this book is that there are no proposals for what if anything can be done to establish irrefutable scientific evidence to substantiate their claims. Is there some sort of deep sonar or other technology which could render detailed graphic images from under the ice? The authors designate a specific area which they have surmised to be the most logical area to explore. What means have we to validate the existence of Atlantis? What would we do if we found it? How to get to the ruins?

I applaud the authors for their well reasoned approach. It makes perfect sense that John Anthony West should write the short afterword. He has done much exploration outside the box of the stodgy, overburdened disciple of archeology and has thus changed its course. What once was characterized as wild imagination without basis now stands as plausible, or at times primary understanding of ancient history. Hopefully, this book will open a much wider discussion and more deliberate inquiry into the subject and raise it from the academic swamp of ridicule. If Atlantis is to be discovered, we owe it to the human race to do so.

Nice facts on Montezuma, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Lief (son of eric the red) being the first european to discover america, Piri Reis, Charles Hapgood, Plato, Magellan, Prince Henry of Portugal, etc.. . Einsteins theory in correlation to the precession of the equinoxes due to the gravity of the planets surrounding earth (moon, sun, etc) causing the Techtonic plates to shift inevitably leading to the great flood. Polar shifts and spreading of the continents away from Pangaia along with temperature of the Arctic regions going from hot to cold causing us to lose touch with the most technological civilization ever known. Some very interesting info on refuges for survivors of the great flood like spirit caves in Thailand, lake Titicaca in Andes mountains, and Ethiopian highlands. Very in depth detail of maps found in the pyramids of atlantis. So many native american tribes mentioned knowing of a continent and a great flood- the Ute, Cherokee, Okanagan, Kutenai (water people). Tribes in south america directly related to the atlantians by blood as well. Some accounts of the actual city of atlantis written by a sailor that are pretty amazing.

Fun book. But DNA analysis 25 years old, graphs require engineer-type mind. My objections are that their theory needs supporting info from archeologists: dig into southern tips of South America, Africa & Australia where evacuees likely fled. Needs supporting info from geophysicists to do graphics about structure of middle earth, below the surface (like below Africa crust there might be large hot liquid, Earth's center may be plasma). Needs astronomers' confirmation about cause of pole shift, for example there might be alternate cause like current sheet from SgtA* causing our sun to micronova. BTW, Hapgood's writings are still top secret.

More good research into likelihood of Atlantis being Antartica.

This is a good read filled with well researched information. It concurs with other information I've read from other sources.

Well researched and developed

Very interesting and well thought out presentation of facts indicating that shifting of the Earth's crust is actually quite plausible. A good read!
