RICHARD SCARRY is one of the world's best-loved children's authors EVER! In his extraordinary career, Scarry illustrated over 150 books, many of which have never been out of print. His books have sold over 100 million copies around the world, and are currently published in over twenty languages. No other illustrator has shown such a lively interest in the words and concepts of early childhood. Richard Scarry was posthumously awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Illustrators in 2012.
The size makes it a little impractical to wield, but that also gives you pages big enough for lots and lots of words and their illustrations, placed in categories where there is context, and where the details are so interesting the child will probably stick with it. Sure there are different kinds of houses and clothing, but also there are crayon, pencil, pickle, and banana cars, and not just the apple car but also the apple plane and the apple house, twice.
I was a little surprised at some of the British spellings.
True grandma skills - checked this out of the library with the Libby app, retrieved it from Amazon and opened it on Kindle with squirmy 10.5 month old on my lap and then read it to him. Faster than trying to get to the bookshelf and get another book. Haha
This is a whole lot of fun to look at with kids. There are so many drawings on each page--enough to keep little kids engaged for a few minutes per page. I really like Scarry's drawings especially the pickle cars!
I love Richard scarry. This book is great but our family favorite is the transportation book he did with a golden bud hidden on every page. I loved that as a child and my kids thinks it's the best as well!
This book is particularly good for early grade ELL (English Language Learner) students. It provides a large, illustrated and fun list of everyday vocabulary.
This was one of my favourites when my children were young, and one of theirs as well. In fact, we consumed a cart-load of Scarry. Soon, I can start again with my grand-children!
