This book is aimed at children aged 5-7 and sets out Captain James Cook's life. The story begins when Cook was eight years old. It tells how he worked on a farm as a young boy and used to dream about lands far away. He longed to be a sailor, to cross the sea and visit faraway countries, especially countries no one had ever seen before. I think that the opening chapter of the book would catch the attention of a child and keep them interested as it relates to their age.

The story skips most of Cook's childhood to when he was eighteen, when part of his wish was granted as he was hired as an apprentice on a boat. He was thrilled with this job at the beginning because he was a sailor but eventually decided to volunteer for the Royal Navy as he thought this would help him to see the world.

This is an informational book that tells of James Cook's voyages and discoveries of different countries and the hardship he had to face in order to follow his dream of becoming an explorer. It also includes detailed maps of these three incredible voyages.

The book is written with the young child in mind. The type is large and the words are easy for younger students to read and comprehend. The pictures are colourful and eye catching making it more interesting for a child to follow. I would use this book to read aloud to the class as it helps children learn about historical times while teaching them factual information.

Funny how there is no mention of Indigenous Australians at all.
