"The Bride of the Delta Queen" is the story of Selena and Chance.
Wow!
The book begins with our h vacationing in New Orleans and waiting for her friend. She is a minister's daughter from Iowa, and finally exploring the city. She gets mistaken by a bunch of men as the women of the night, and mockingly names her price. The H overhears the conversation and moves on to proposition her. The h tries to deny him and escapes..
Soon she meets an older lady who is waiting for her lover, and decides to board the famous boat called Delta Queen across the Mississippi river as her companion. She realizes that the H is her nephew, and has come aboard to break the engagement, and battle for her heart..
I definitely did NOT see the twist coming- and it totally did make me cry. Cynical H, confused h aboard a ship filled with memories and history. Their chemistry was average, the H did come on a bit too strong- a trait that I've come to realize in Ms Dailey's heroes.

I think i prefer Janet Dailey`s Silhuette romances more than her Harlequin stories. "The Bride of the Delta Queen" did start off interesting with the red-haired heroine Selena Merick joking to a bunch of men that she is "expensive" in her night services. The man sitting near that table was none other than the cynical hero Chance Barkley who takes her words seriously and forces her into his arms. Selena nearly didn`t manage to escape him, but when she does she thinks she never will see him agan. Alas she does, and feels trapped when she knows he is aboard on the steamboat to Mississippi.
This could have been a lot better. I mean the start was quite dramatic and Chance had no reason whatsoever to treat Selena like that, even if she was "a lady of the night". He had none right whatsoever to judge when she gave him NO apparent reason for it since she never even said anything remotely rude to him. In many other stories there usually is a solid reason for heroes to be so darn pissed and vengeful especially when heroines insult them to their faces at the start of the story. But in this story,none, zero. Chance had no special characteristics to him either that truly sets him apart from many other heroes, there was something cold about him i can`t describe. In that way i felt there was no reason for Selina to actually fall in love with him (although it took quite long time for her to fall for him). I don`t know, this was a average read.

My one serious gripe with the story is that even though Selena spelt out her fake profession for any and all onlookers, that did not mean she was open to manhandling and sexual harassment meted out by any random man. Irrespective of the profession of a woman, once she refuses, no man worth his salt should force her. That just makes him a molester, not an alpha male. To exacerbate the situation, Chance acted like a Neanderthal throughout and did not give any credence to Selena's explanations. His indulgence of his aunt's whimsies and intent to protect her from ridicule, saved him a bit in my opinion.

The lady was not for sale. Selena Merrick anticipated having a pleasant vacation in New Orleans. She was even lighthearted enough to joke with a group of conventioneers who mistakenly thought she was a lady of the night. Chance Barkley, however, overhearing Selena’s foolish words about the fees she supposedly charged, took them seriously and insisted on hiring her services. Selena managed to escape him, but when they met again on board a Mississippi steamboat she knew her luck had run out…

I like it. It reminded me why I used to love Janet Dailey.
The story follows the minister’s daughter from Iowa who goes on vacation alone. In New Orleans, she’s propositioned by an elderly man who, after drinking too much, mistakes her for a prostitute.
The good-humored h finds it hilarious. Imagine her being mistaken for a prostitute! She quickly names a large sum to get rid of him and rushes back to her hotel. Her trouble begins when a handsome stranger shows up, offering to take her on. Evidently he can afford her services.
The hero attempts some kissing and groping, but the heroine outsmarts him and manages to escape. A few days later, she befriends a kind woman who invites her on a cruise.
Throughout the story, I kept wanting to warn the h not to be so trusting of strangers.
But then the hero reappears, so everything ends well. The older woman is apparently his aunt.
There’s a mystery involving the aunt, though the hero refuses to discuss family matters with a stranger (no matter kissing and groping the said stranger).
Why 4 stars? I wanted the H to make a grander gesture in the end.

2008 Review: the beginning of the book was exciting and funny. But then after that I kinda lost interest and started skimming and just wanted to reach the ending already. There was nothing really wrong with the writing but I just lost interest. This is one of my Mom's favorite books, but I thought it was just "alright". There is a sort of mystery in the book I guess. Anyway, it was just OK to me.

I love thse Harlequin romance novels. They are a quick easy read and usually all ends happily; which, this one does. It is a nice break from the real world. They all are the basic novel handsome rich man mets girl usually not of money, they spark back and forth and end falling in love.

Fine but it really didn’t need to sort of romanticize antebellums and plantations. Also, I had no idea that this author had plagiarized Nora Roberts. I saw on wiki about it but had no idea how big of a deal it actually was.

This was a fun story, set partially in New Orleans and partially on the riverboat the Delta Queen, on an extended Christmas cruise.
I enjoyed he setting and the characters, however I had difficulty rooting for Chance, the lead in this story because for quite a while he seems like a pompous jerk.

I read this book that I found at my grandma’s house and I was curious if it was actually good. Spoiler alert: it’s not great. The description was intricate in parts that it didn’t need to be, and I couldn’t really get a full visual of what the Delta Queen would look like and it’s pretty prominent as a setting device. Also, the twist that Leslie is dead? That was probably the most interesting thing in the story. Chance and Selena’s relationship was also quite weird and it was just not for me.

This book was ok. I was disappointed, it didn't take place (all) in La. But it was an ok read. The ending could h ave been better. Trident tell where the bbc.co wedding was taking p'll ace.
