Blood Hunters #1

Blood Guilt

Rate this book
The first of a new vampire romance series, a sequel to the Awakened by Blood trilogy.

Mihaela, a fearless vampire hunter secretly haunted by loneliness and childhood tragedy, finds it difficult to adjust to the new world order where vampires are not always the bad guys. She's taking a much needed vacation in Scotland when she sees a little boy being chased through the streets of Edinburgh. Rescuing him brings bigger problems - two vampires from her past: Gavril, who killed her family; and the reclusive and troubled Maximilian, gifted Renaissance artist and one-time overlord of the most powerful undead community in the world. Maximilian once saved her life and now needs that favor returned.

The earth moves for Mihaela in more ways than one. From Scotland to Budapest and Malta, she races against time to prevent a disastrous, vampire-induced earthquake and save an innocent yet powerful child – all while fighting a dreadful attraction to Maximilian, her only ally, whom she can’t afford to trust. For Maximilian, the hunter becomes a symbol of renewed existence, as he struggles to accept his past and rediscovers his appetite for blood and sex - and maybe even happiness.

The first volume of a follow-up to the splendid Awakened by Blood trilogy. Narrative continuity is maintained and most of the original characters return. The focus, however, switches from arch-vampire Salomon and his human consort Elizabeth, to reclusive and guilt-ridden vampire Maximilian and Mihaela, the most interesting of the vampire hunters.

We learn much more about Maximilian and Mihaela as they enter into a passionate relationship and provide the erotic spice for the story. Unfortunately, the characters of neither Maximilian nor Mihaela are as original and compelling as those of Salomon and Elizabeth, so the added detail does little to bring them to life. For all their psychological hang-ups, miseries, doubts and passions, they remain fairly stock characters.

The story is almost as flat as the characters, with vampires and hunters chasing each other across Europe and the Mediterranean on the tracks of an Edinburgh kid called Robbie who's telepathic and possesses stone-shifting powers.

The stone-shifting plays an integral part in the narrative and links to some of the powers Salomon demonstrated in the preceding trilogy, but the kid and the way the adults react to him are far too mechanical as plot devices. At one point, Mihaela exclaims, "...there's a child involved, and thousands of others could lose their lives." Dialogue straight out of a third-rate TV series.

I avoid series and sequels on principle because they're inevitably disappointing. Blood Guilt has all the hallmarks of a written-to-order sequel prompted by market demand rather than part of a carefully planned and plotted story arc.

Blood guilt is the first book in Marie's Blood Hunters series. It takes place after another of her series (Awakened by Blood).

I hadn't read the first series, and I still enjoyed this book. I'm sure there was some small nuances I didn't pick up because of the lack of known history, but it certainly didn't detract from the story.

Mihaela, our protagonist, is a damaged vampire hunter. The hunters have been her family since she was a small child who survived a vampire attack on her house that left her real family murdered. She's not really a character I could relate to. She is head strong and stubborn, and makes ridiculous decisions based on messed up emotional needs and thoughts too. I liked her, but didn't really 'get' her.

Maximilian, our dreamy yet dark and brooding male love interest, is an interesting character. He's hundreds of years old, has spent years punishing himself for something he did in his past, and probably one of the most broken, yet strangely powerful vampire characters I've read about.

The chemistry between the two worked brilliantly. I loved the tension. I even liked the weirdly perfect sex that would normally irk me to tears.

Marie has created an action packed story, one that is littered with twists and turns, challenges and conflicts for all characters. Add to the mix a little more paranormal than just your average vampires and you end up with this interesting story.

I will be reading book 2 of this series very soon!

One thing I noticed: 67% - Their (They're) all with Robbie...

The 'forbidden' relationship never gets old. In this case, it's a vampire hunter and a vampire. Not necessarily a new pairing since it's been done countless times over, but I still enjoyed it and plan to continue the series.

Miheala is a vampire hunter. Something that happened in her past led her to become what she is today - tough, cynical, solitary, untrusting, the list goes on. Suffice it to say, she's in a way damaged. She also loathes vampires (of course, being a vamp hunter, that goes without saying.). She ends up in a fight with vampires against vampires, all because of a sweet five year old boy named Robbie. Because of Robbie, she meets Maximilian. Max is another damaged individual; he isolates himself because of something he did in the past. Despite the fact that he has been forgiven, he can't forgive himself because of a profound sense of guilt. His burden causes him to hole away with his art, not living his (un)life.

Mihaela and Max made for a wonderful pairing. Complete opposites, yet similar in many ways. Both are, because of their hang-ups, very distrusting. During the story, I found myself asking how in the world can they make this work? I loved their attraction to one another. Max makes it a personal goal to seduce Mihaela, she makes it her goal to resist and/or stake him. Preferably both. Even with succumbing to the attraction a time or two, they both second guess their relationship many times. Yes, it's sort of 'angsty', but it made it kind of fun to wait and see if they would be able to overcome what's holding them back and just take the plunge.

This series is related to another series, the Awakened by Blood trilogy. I haven't read that series, and I wasn't lost while reading this one. Marie does a great job of providing some of the details necessary in order to have certain things in this book make sense to someone new to the series/spinoff. I do plan to read the trilogy after this series because the 'library fight' that's mentioned several times has piqued my curiosity.

Marie Treanor is a new to me author. Really liked her writing and the way she has done her vampires. Blood Guilt is her first novel in the "Blood Hunters" series which is a spin off of her "Awakened By Blood" series. Blood guilt follows the main characters Mihaela and Maximilian.

I liked the book. Some of the stuff I felt were dependent on reading the "Awakened by Blood" series. (which i did not read) I didn't feel the depth of the betrayal that Maximilian did to Salamon but I am pretty sure that if I would have read the previous books It would of been better for me. This also extends to Mihaelas character. I really liked the glimpse of Maxmilians life as a human they were intriguing. The sex scenes were HOT also!

The relationship was a bit frustrating. Lots of trust issues. I understand that Mihaela went through a traumatic experience with vampires killing her parents and she needed to learn to trust etc. but as the story went on it just got frustrating. I Loved Maximilians character! (I again did not read the other series so to me I didn't see him as a bad guy just some poor sexy ass depressed vampire that made a mistake). The ending was wrapped up nicely. (thank god the trust issues were resolved!)

Other than that I am looking forward to the next book in the series. :D

After reading this book I realized it wasn't really my type of book. I feel like I could read the others easily though. Very easy to get into with an interesting story line. Great for anyone who enjoys vampire/paranormal novels.

Story Style: Both Character and Plot Driven

Mihaela is a Romanian vampire hunter. The story begins in Scotland as Mihaela searches for the vampire named Gavin, a Romanian responsible for the death of her family. She'd been searching the world for this vampire for almost twenty years, hate and vengeance as her only emotions, leaving little to no room for much else…especially love. While she’s out following a lead, she stumbles across a young boy, Robbie, being chased by a gang of vampires. Trailing him leads her to the man she came for, but it also introduces her to yet another controversial vampire figure from her past, the rebellious, but handsomely outcast Maximillian.

He returns to his adoptive, but abusive parents. That is until the drunkard rebel vampire with several causes, Maximillian, enters the picture. Apparently in a previous series based on these characters he saved Mihaela from Gavin. This time she has to save his life, something Maximillian thoroughly enjoyed. Soon, the vampire hunters, their enemies, the vampires who belong to the lead vampire, Saloman’s Alliance, and a host of other characters come together, all fighting to save the world from Gavin’s destructive plans.

Maximillian is a vampire with drinking habit. He also sleeps in a lighthouse and draws psychological versions of people in sketches. Due to his past betrayals among the vampire Saloman's Alliance group he's working to rebuild his image and discover himself along the way. Enter Mihaela, the loner, who was taken in and trained by the vampire hunters at a very early age. She and Maximillian are both psychologically damaged, so they’re attraction to each other is a natural one. But can they work beyond the trust issues in order to fight for the same cause: saving the world from evil vampires with ambitious, but terrible plans for humanity?

**Small spoiler alert**

What I enjoyed:

1. Maximillian the vampire artist. Everything about this character was poetic. From the way he looked to his hobbies to the way he talked about Mihaela. Sentences like this one: "It's rare to find someone who looks more threatened by having her life saved than by the prospect of it being taken."

2. Mihaela's feelings toward Robbie. (The maternal instinct in me, I guess)

3. Max's lighthouse tomb. Seriously, what vampire has a tomb in an old lighthouse? Very cool.

4. The cool vampire compass that connected supernatural creatures and people through common interests. (You’ll have to read it to understand this one)

5. Max's overall sexiness-I mean the steamy scenes in this one aren't for the faint of heart. But the author handles them with finesse without getting too juvenile with descriptions.
6. The humans in this novel: Elizabeth, Istvan, Konrad, Cyn, and Robbie have some type of supernatural gene which balances out the paranormal aspect so that it doesn't become one-sided and hard to believe.

7. The unique interaction between humans and vampires was different from other stories about vampires that I've read. It added depth and mystery to the overall tone and is part of what kept me turning the pages at 1:30a.m.

9. This was a book that I couldn't put down and that's not something that happens to me as often as it used to due to a cluttered schedule.

What I didn't enjoy:

1. Max leaving Mihaela for what he considered to be her own sake...aka douche alert.

2. Mihaela's fickle characteristics. One minute she's tough as nails, the very next second almost, she's putty in the hands of her enemy. She confused me a bit at times. For her age she was very angsty almost as if she were a teenager. By the end of the novel, she makes up for it though. The author does a fine job portraying her growth in my opinion.

Overall, Blood Guilt worked very well for me because I'm not generally a fan of vampire books. But a well written and intriguing storyline will pull me in and hold me through to the end. And that's what Ms. Treanor's story did. There were exotic locales, memorable characters, intriguing lead vampires, a satisfying ending, and just enough steam factor between the two main characters to keep the story exciting. I'd recommend this to any paranormal romance fan and even those readers like me who usually lean toward angel books.

Well done Ms. Treanor. My rating: 4 wings.

I was so excited when I found out that Marie Treanor had started a new series that would continue in the Awakened by Blood world. I fell in love with this series last year that had me wanting to travel to Romania. Blood Guilt is the first book in the Blood Hunters series and I loved it! I was so happy that this first book focuses on two of my favorite side characters from the Awakened By Blood series, the hunter Mihaela and the vampire Maximilian.

Before I get further into the review let me tell you that if you have not read the Awakened By Blood series, you will not be lost to start with Blood Guilt. But, I did love that I had some background on the characters in this new series.

Mihaela has taken a very long deserved vacation to get away from everything that has to do with her Hunter lifestyle, but sometimes you just can’t get away from who you are, this is what Mihaela finds out when she discovers a young boy surrounded by vampires. Robbie really puts a kink in Mihaela’s relaxation plans, the small boy needs to be protected because of his special gift, and Mihaela can not do that protecting alone. The last thing she wants is help from a vampire especially the untrustworthy Maximilian.

I worried a bit going into Blood Guilt that this would be the same story with different names…I did not have anything to worry about. Maximilian and Mihaela’s story was so different from Elizabeth and Saloman’s.

Mihaela has had a hard life, though the hunters are working with Saloman (vampire ruler), she still has a hard time trusting any vampire.

"Memory—distant memory—was at least partly responsible for her restlessness. Even now, walking among the tumbled stones of this once great edifice, she got random flashes of that childhood vampire attack, of the slaughter, of the vampire’s back vanishing out of the window as the hunters broke through the door. Almost worse, she couldn’t stop thinking about her parents and her sister who’d died."

Anyone who saw their family murdered by vampires would have a hard time trusting them. I liked how real Marie Treanor wrote Mihaela’s emotions, watching Mihaela struggle through what she should and sould not feel about different vampires made her so much more real to me.

Poor Maximilian has finally resolved himself to face all the wrongs he has done to people in the past, which is why he is completely drunk when he tries to help Robbie and Mihaela fend off the vampires who are after the boy. I love Maximilian’s character but I don’t feel bad for all the trouble he has gotten himself into. I know that he has great guilt over what he has done to people in the past and I enjoyed seeing him face it.

Mihaela and Maximilian together was awesome to read! It was not insta-love but they both had great lust for each other from the get go. Neither of them wanted to truly feel anything for the other which made reading their romance unfold much more fun.

“I feel,” he whispered. “I feel for you. If the love is there, we can learn to trust.”
She touched his cheek, his lips. “Love,” she whispered. “You said ‘love.’”
“What would you call it?”
She began to smile, not sure she could bear any of this. “I’d call it love,” she said and kissed him."

I was so happy that I did get glimpses of one of my favorite couples: Elizabeth and Saloman. Elizabeth gets to tell her best friend Mihaela some unexpected news that would shock anyone who found out. I really like that their story is continuing in the Blood Hunters series. To see them continue to grow as a couple was an unexpected treat.

"She always took him by surprise. Perhaps it was part of the process of easing himself back into the real world, the excitement of his self-appointed mission, that made her a symbol of life to him."

If you are a paranormal romance fan, or if you like urban fantasy with romance thrown in I think this is for you. I can’t wait for the next book in the Blood Hunters series.

Happy Reading,
Rebecca

Turn the air conditioning on because it’s getting hot in here!

Blood Guilt is the first book in a new paranormal romance/adventure series and the continuation of the Awakened by Blood trilogy, The book can be read as a standalone.

Mihaela became a ruthless vampire Hunter for a good reason, a vampire killed her parents and little sister when she was a child and she was raised within the secret league of Hunters who tracked down and killed any and all vampires to protect an unsuspecting humanity. However, things are changing, an Ancient vampire, Saloman, has come forward and is starting a movement of vampires and Hunters working together to coexist peacefully with the eventual goal to bring vampires into public awareness. Mihaela has already been in one battle where Hunters fought alongside vampires, her life was even saved by a vampire. Needless to say this is really rocking Mihaela’s sense of order and she takes a much needed vacation in Edinburgh. Of course, Mihaela finds herself rescuing Robbie, a child from a group of vampires who are attempting to kidnap him and returns him to his foster parents. She also finds herself saving another vampire from the group. Mihaela is quite the multitasker. Mihaela is rather nonplused to discover the vampire she saves is the one who saved her life earlier. Small world. He is Maximilian, a blindingly gorgeous and sexy Renaissance era vampire. Which works out well as Mihaela is quite stunning herself. And two people who look that good have got to have some serious sexual chemistry going on. Which they do. They also have matching sets of emotional baggage, Mihaela’s traumatic family loss and Max’s extreme torment and guilt for betraying his sire and best buddy Saloman (who’s over it by the way). Both are wary of emotional connections but they really LIKE each other. Their adventure begins when Robbie is successfully snatched this time by a vampire, Gavril, who Mihaela recognizes as the same vampire who massacred her family. (Really small world.) Separately and together they attempt to rescue Robbie and stop Gavril and his crew of bad vampires from using him to take over the world. They also manage to get in some crazy wild sex a few times as well. Max is obviously also a multitasker. The question may be less about will they be able to save the world and more about can they overcome their emotional angst and be the happy Vampire/Hunter couple they are truly meant to be.

Snark aside, I loved this book and M&M were great characters with genuine concerns. How do you go from hating - and career killing the beings that killed your family and left you emotionally stunted to accepting your soul mate is one of them? It is a tricky question. And for Max - how do you just let centuries of isolation, guilt and self loathing go and let yourself get close to another person (no matter how much they turn you on)? Meanwhile there is an intricate and quite interesting storyline going on with Robbie and the reason behind the death of Mihaela’s late parents (such a small world) all playing a part in Gavril’s attempt to destroy the bulk of humanity. Blood Guilt reads as a one steamy paranormal romance and still works as an exciting adventure with bad vampires fighting good vampires and Hunters being forced to decide if they can go against all their training (the only good vampire is a staked vampire kind of thing) and work along side their former enemies. This is a fun read and the action (and I mean ALL the action) never stops. The best part is that this is the first book in a series in this world so you can keep playing in that world even when this book ends.

I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

WARNING:
This is an adult book. Don't read it, and say that you read it on my recommendation and you are scarred for life. You've been warned.

"Mihaela had been fighting vampires all her life. She'd accepted long ago that she would die doing so. Hunting the undead was her raison d'etre, her life, her job for more than ten years."

Mihaela is thirty one years old, and a vampire hunter. When the last of the pure Ancient race of vampires was awoken last year, all the hunters feared war. But, what happened was order... and vampires "coming out of the coffin." Now, vampires are not for automatic killing, unless they were a threat.

She's on holiday in Scotland, when she sees a boy running down multiple alleys... being chased by vampires. Mihaela follows, concerned for the boy, and finds him talking to what appears to be a drunk man.

During the fight, we learn from Mihaela that hunters are different from normal humans. They are faster, sure, but they also gain strength from every vampire they kill, the same way that vampires gain strength when they kill other vampires.

After the fight that follows, Mihaela learns two things: one, the vampire that killed her family all those years ago was there, and probably recognized her, and two: the drunk man wasn't actually a drunk man, but the vampire Maximilian, who saved her life in a fight, just before she left for Scotland.

She goes back to the alley, looking for him, after the boy's, Robbie, foster parents pick him up and disappear, there was an earthquake.

Maximilian is very injured, many bones broken, and not enough blood in him to heal himself, and the sun is coming up soon. Grudgingly, Mihaela helps carry him to the closest hotel.

Miahela lets Maximilian feed on her, to heal, but on one condition: he helps her find the vampire who was in charge of the others, the one who killed her family.

After he feeds on her, he tells her about the vampire; named Gavril, Romanian liked Mihaela.

The book changes to Maximilian's point of view, and we get a glimpse into his past, before he was changed, when he was just an artist in 15th century Italy. He calls the child to him, who we discover is a telepathic human, who was called by the other vampires because they were the only ones who can help him.

Maximilian brings Robbie to Mihaela, and says that she needs to watch him while he tracks Gavril, not only because they want Robbie, but because his foster family is abusive.

He leaves Robbie with Mihaela, after masking both himself and Robbie.

-

What I liked about this book is that they didn't try to explain vampires like we knew nothing about them, because vampire books are excessive in numbers, and I don't care about their mythology anymore.

What I didn't like about this book was how Mihaela got around Maximilian. What I hate about all romance novels, is that the authors feel like the only way we'll enjoy the romance in the story is if one of the people involved hates the other person, until something important happens, when they're in love.

If that makes sense.

I hate it anyway.

I'm not quite sure if I could handle reading this entire series, if we're being honest with each other. Because it seems like one of those books where nothing else can possibly happen. And I'm not exactly searching for vampire books to read.

In Anticipation for book number five coming out soon I plan on reviewing each of the books in the series every Thursday for this month. If you don't know Marie Treanor or her other vampire series Awakened by Blood is the prequel to this series, it is not imperative that you read the first series she puts it in a nice nutshell for every thing you need to know for this book.

Blood Guilt is your typical mortal enemies unite and fall in love. But it's done well. The only thing I wish their was more of was more about the idea of the psychic powered earthquakes worked. (But I wanted to be a geologist and love stuff like that). Great characters with lots of emotional damage they have to move past before they can admit it's more then just lust.

Mihaela grew up hating vampires and trained hard to be one of the Hunters best. Now with peace between the two some people are having a hard time accepting it, Vampires and Hunters alike are each planning something to disrupt the peace. Mihaela on vacation taking a break from a fellow Hunter who is pressuring her to join his resistance and fight against the vampires, not believing there can be peace between the Hunters and the Vampires of the world and from her own dreams she tries to escape the erotic dreams about one very off limits vampire. Edinburgh was a good place to go, away from everyone and just enjoy the solitude of being in a crowded city, and that is exactly what Mihaela was doing until a little runaway orphan who can talk telepathically with Vampires ran into her life. Now Mihaela is chasing down the vampire who murdered her family and set her on this path and protect the young boy, Robbie.

Also trying to protect Robbie from the Vampires who will use him for ill purposes is Maximilian. The tragically handsome and mysterious vampire who once betrayed his creator but redeemed himself later (during the Awakened by Blood series) and also saved Mihaela's life during the epic battle of power (again in the last series). Maximilian is over six hundred years old and spent most of that in exile, after his colossal mistake of betraying Saloman. He has no interest in life not even his art work seems of interest. That is until he meets the luscious huntress Mihaela. He has become obsessed with her drawing her sculpting her, but he can't get it right something seems to be missing and now her she is in Scotland fighting off vampires to protect a young child with extraordinary powers.

Together they have to track down Gavril who took Robbie and plans to use his power to amplify the stone power of a bunch of vampires to cause a massive earthquake that would kill millions of humans in the process. Along the way Mihaela deals with her attraction to the one person who she should not be attracted to but gives in with a steamy hot love scenes, she even gives in and lets Maximilian take blood from her. But can she trust him with more then just her body and blood but with her heart as well. Maximilian has started to live again and everyone noticed that it was because Mihaela, can he convince her that she is all he want to live for.

It may have been a typical mortal enemies fall in love and live HEA but this was a really good read and look forward to the rest of the series.

Blood of Angels (pub 1/13)

The cover had, as often covers do, the effect of getting me curious. I remember seeing a couple titles by this author somewhere, somehow, I might have even gotten one of them and never got to read it (like all the other hundreds of ebooks I've hoarded...), I don't know, but I remembered wanting to read one. So when this opportunity presented itself, I was all on board. I would have been even if I hadn't ever heard the author's name just because, you know...smexeh cover draws me in. I'm easy like that with PNR :D

Now, jokes aside, I fell in love with this read something like the first 3 lines I think. I was hooked right off the bat, basically. You know sometimes someone's writing just clicks with you instantly, and you're on board from there on, come what may? It happened to me here. The writing just made that much sense to me, on all levels, informational, emotional, style, accessibility, imagery, the works. Awesome writing! I'm sure I'll dig up those other titles now and give them a greedy read, I just get this feeling I'll love everything this author would write, you know what I mean?

The plot flows really well, it's got action, fighting scenes, romantic tension, some adult romance going on ( Huzzah, guys! The romance is like...yummy-licious with cherries on top :D ), all sorts of tension, conflict and acceptance - yes, it does have it all. But as you know by now, if I loved this so much it means it also has the real treat: character development. For more then one character, imagine my delight!

Mihaela was so broken but without needing the fixing, you know? I may or may not have been partial to the fact she's Romanian, like I am :D She has a Romanian name too, and I know you'll totally think me biased here, but she has the spunk, the balcanic fire going on, the beautiful turmoil that just sucks you in and makes your prisoner :D Ok, I am a bit biased, so sue me! But she has the spirit, and it's rare I actually feel that about characters.
Maximilian was, of course, total crush material. Stupid-strong, charismatic, tortured, hot...yummmm. Did I mention hot? Yeah, total drool-material. He did have the complexity of an old vampire, the mystery, the impenetrable depth of soul (stop scoffing!), and, as a bonus, the wits someone who lives for a very long time would develop. You know those vampires that seem to go all, "Uuuuh! What does this button do?"? Well he's not one of those. Badass with style, man, this guy is completely awesome.
And, the best part is yet to come - shocking, I know. It's the chemistry between them. We're talking sparks flying, buildings burning, explosions, earthquakes, solar bursts - that kind of chemistry. I was all grinning and squealing and fidgeting every time these two were together. Serious awesomeness. But their relationship didn't stop there, it wasn't the instalove sort of affair. Feelings developed, they didn't just explode into existence. And I loved how these feelings changed them both, it was a beautiful thing to be a part of.

What else could I say? If you love adult PNR, you just gotta read this baby. Big time entertainment value!

A heady blend of intrigue, action and scorching sensuality, Blood Guilt is what I've come to love about stories written by Marie Treanor.
The best starting point is a female vampire hunter. Mihaela is that kind of strong action heroine with the right amount of vulnerability to make her endearing as well as remarkable. She's torn in her loyalties because the world is changing rapidly. Vampires are on the brink of coming out in public. Some uneasy alliances have been struck, but stubborn vampire hunters are against all kinds of truce. A new powerful vampire overlord is in a deep relationship with a human woman with powers of her own. That starts Mihaela thinking if vampires have a soul that allows the possibility of love. And she can't seem to shrug off the memory of another vampire, Maximilian. After all, he saved her life. An oddity that goes against her ingrained training to kill all blood suckers on sight.
There is so much back history going on that I was afraid I'd missed a previous book in the series. That is not the case, it's just that we happen to meet the characters in the middle of a world crisis. They've already been through so much that the emotional and social turmoil is already at full speed.
Despite that awkward feeling of disorientation, the characters clicked so well together that they all came about really strong and interesting. I loved Maximilian as a character. He's twisted by guilt and lack of hope for the future. Something that the appearance of Mihaela is going to shake him out of, slowly but profoundly. He is also an artist. That always melts me. I have a weakness for Italian Renaissance artists who pour their souls into their paintings and sculptures. It's like writing with words of colour and texture.
The romance between Mihaela and Maximilian is intense. The sensuality that binds them is Really Intense. I'm not exactly a fan of blood-sucking in a relationship, but the author has a way with these scenes that help me overcome the gross part and just get lost in the bliss. The novel is enticingly scattered with intimate encounters, they were not only arousing but also touching. And when it's only a kiss, it is so much more than a kiss.
Even though I was craving for more and more intimacy, both emotional and physical, , the plot was so engaging that I was ok with the waiting. I love the intrigue that Treanor's vampires bring into the world. They mean business with their evil plots, always trying to hurt humanity on a grand scale.
Another exciting thing is the Ancient technology that is used in this story. It's really mysterious and can be developed into multiple ramifications. I was really intrigued by how it was used by Maximilian. There are many elements I enjoyed in Blood Guilt. Mihaela and the vendetta she's carrying since childhood, the secondary characters who I bet will have their story in future novels, the action, the psychic powers, and how everything is linked together. So, I'm completely satisfied with the kick-ass action, the clever plot that's surely growing in the following installments, and the powerful, erotic romance.

Blood Guilt. (Book One of the Blood Hunters Series). Marie Treanor
Review from Jeannie Zelos Book reviews.
I've not read the Awakened by Blood trilogy – and it doesn't seem to be on kindle so it's out for me, but that didn't stop me loving the first in this sequel series. I loved Marie's Serafina books, so was pretty sure I’d like these and I was right. This one has the same gripping plots, believable characters ( that Robbie – he's such a great kid. I can picture him, a sturdy, stoical sort of child, old before his time) and sexy, delicious vampires, alongside some gruesome killer vamps. The sex in this one is hot, sensual, erotic and very well written. Its not sex in the story just for titillation, but its integral to the story and fits the characters so well. ( and makes for some spicy, enjoyable reading )
I liked Mihaela, though she seemed very fixated and stringent in her views on vampires – despite one saving her life and her best friend living with the current leader – I understood that by way of explanation of her upbringing. Orphaned by vampires killing her family she was befriended by the Hunters from a young age and drawn gradually into the group. Of course impressions formed at a young age shape much of what we believe when we're older so its no wonder she felt as she did – and was so confused by the sexual feelings and dreams she had about Maximilian, the one who saved her life. It's typical of her nature to involve herself in Robbie's initial safety and then joining with Maximilian when Robbie is captured by Gavril. She's struggling with the hunters, they are keen to work with the vampires that want to come out, they've reached a tentative agreement but her long time Hunter partner isn't keen oh that idea, sees all vampires as needing to be killed and trying to persuade Mihaela to his view. She's in Scotland taking time to to mull over the whole problem – but the problem seems to have followed her there!
The vampires are split into two factions – those who like Maximilian want to come out, and alongside humans, and those like Gabril who just want to decimate and dominate humans. They don't care what sort of destruction it will take to reach that state, and are very dangerous. I understood Maximilian’s initial torpor too, he's hundreds of years old and looks back at the mistakes he's made and seems to be feeling “was it all worth it?” Then he meets Mihaela, and is struck not by just her attraction but her nature, and the way she's all out to help others, and slowly he gets her to trust him and she brings him back to enjoyment of life.
Its a great read, in Marie's typical easy to read style, where the plots and actions flow neatly, and the reader isn't left thinking “what? When did that happen?” It's part of a series but there's no v cliffhanger and the story is complete in itself. It's well priced too at £1.49 for 301 pages. I look forward to the next three in the series – lucky me, as I have them for review too. Those will follow over the next week or so :)
Stars: four and a half.

Mihaela survived the murder of her parents and sister at the hands of vampires. She has spent her life as a vampire hunter, tracking the murderer while attempting keep humanity safe from the vampire threat. After a surprise alliance with a few key vampires, the hunters now find themselves divided. Some hunters desire to end contact and continue an adversarial relationship, while either seek to enlarge the partnership and work on building a relationship between vampires and humans. Despite all that Mihaela has been through, she is quite undecided and so she takes a trip to consider her options. When she is forced to save a child whose psychic power seems to draw him to vampires
Mihaela finds herself in a race against time to not only save the child but all of humanity from a new vampire threat. Unfortunately for Mihaela this time not only is the world at risk, but her very heart when the vampire Maximilian appears and demands a partnership because he too has a special affinity with the child. In the process of saving humanity, will Mihaela lose her heart?

The Blood Hunters series is a follow up to the Awakened by Blood trilogy. This is my first exposure to Treanor's work, so I cannot speak about the continuity of this work. I will however say that once we have yet another story where the female protagonist has a tortured past leaving her essentially isolated. Dead parents has become such a common trope that at this point, it's beyond tiresome.

Blood Guilt is the typical paranormal romance in that it has the typical boy meets girl but girl doesn't like boy. They work together and boy and girl come together briefly until something comes between 'them to add tension to the story and finally the problem is overcome and we get the HEA. Blood Guilt is like a paranormal romance written by the numbers because there is no movement from the typical narrative and no doubt from the very first word how this story is going to end. I will say that Treanor at the very least skipped the all to typical comparing of a penis to things like tree stumps or wrists. Unfortunately, Treanor did include having Maximilian say repeatedly that he could smell Mihaela's arousal which to me just reads as disgusting genital odor. Yes, I know this sort of language is typical, but that doesn't make it any less gross.

For a paranormal romance, Treanor did include quite a bit of world building which I greatly enjoyed. I found the vampire lore to be original and very much liked the idea of an original group of vampires who then created more vampires. Treanor even went as far as to explain how it is that her vampires could consume liquid without a digestive system. Unfortunately, along with the great world building, came the typical vampire angst in that Maximilian, the vampire love interest was musty and suffering, until Mihaela comes along with her extra special specialness (I couldn't resist the snark).

I discovered Marie Treanor last year when she toured for Blood Eternal, the final book in the Awakened by Blood series. I loved Saloman and Elizabeth's journey and was a bit depressed when I got to the end. So imagine my excitement to find a new trilogy by Marie Treanor featuring 2 characters from the previous series.

Blood Guilt centers around Maximilian and Mihaela. Maximilian is the "child" of Ancient Vampire Saloman. Maximilian has spent the past hundred years hiding from both the vampire and human world as he wallows in guilt for his role in the attempted murder of his sire. He's spent the past couple of months trying to figure out what direction he wants his life to go when he's saved from almost certain death by Mihaela.

Mihaela, a vampire hunter is on vacation in Scotland at a crossroads. Three months ago, she was almost killed during a battle with vampires on opposing sides from Saloman and the hunters, but was saved by Maximillian. Since then, she's been confused between what she was raised to believe and what she has witness in Saloman and Maximillian. When she saves Maximillian from a beating, she figured they were even. But she discovers that in order to save an orphan boy from being used by a group of vampire, lead by the vampire responsible for killing her family, she's going to need Maximillian's help.

After Mihaela railed on Elizabeth for being involved with a vampire, it was fitting that it was a vampire that would cause her to question everything she was taught to believe. Prior to Maximillian, not even Elizabeth could get her to question her belief in the Slayers or how she came to be in their care. She did struggle with her feelings for Maximillian and the things they had done together, but at the end I think she realized that no matter what he was, he, along with Robbie, was what made her happy.

For Maximillian, Mihaela showed him he was worthy of love. While he may have gone into their relationship with different intentions, she brought his humanity back. With that he was able to let go of the past and work toward a future with Mihaela and Robbie.

I was happy to find so many of the characters from the Awakened by Blood series in Blood Guilt. This is truly a continuation of the main storyline that we had in that first series, now with a different leading couple. I can't wait to see what happens with Konrad in his quest to break the alliance with the vampires. But one word of caution. While this book is a stand alone and could be read without having read the previous series, I would recommend it so you know what's lead up to the starting point of this book and, more importantly, how Maximillian and Mihaela ended up where they are.

This is the start of a series, with 2-4 also available. It tells the story of humans & vampires trying to find a way to coexist.
The human interests have always been protected by an elite society, the Hunters. Mihaela may only be 25 but is already skilled with many vamp kills to her credit. Her family was slaughtered during a vamp attack when she was a child & revenge fuels her dedication to the job. But lately, she's begun to question if all vamps are the same.
Her BF/colleague Elizabeth recently moved in with Saloman, the last of a pure race of Ancients, who obviously adores her. So vamps have feeling. Huh. Who knew? Saloman is the chief vampire & wants to create some kind of detente, a world where they can come out of the closet. But not all of his subjects are on board.
Second only to Saloman in strength is Maximilian. He's recently come out of a long self imposed exile but not even the other vamps trust him. In a bloody battle not long ago, he actually helped the Hunters slay other vamps. And saved Mihaela's life.
I think you can see where this is going. Two damaged people meet again when they have to work together to save a special little boy with psychic abilities from the bad vamps. They plan to use his power to cause massive earthquakes, annihilating much of the population so they can rule. The chase will take them from Budapest to Scotland, Malta & back again. The fact that the head of this group is the one that killed her family is all the incentive Mihaela needs.
Max & Mihaela have never had a problem being attracted to each other but will have to overcome their prejudices & learn to trust. Both of the organizations have rogue factions trying to sabotage the truce.
There are several side stories to the main plot & many peripheral characters, some of whom are featured in the sequels.
This was an OK read. Because it's the first one, the author has a lot of world building to do & back stories to get out of the way. In flashbacks, we learn of the history (1500's Italy) between Saloman & Max & why Max shut himself away for so long.
But this is Max & Mihaela's story. They're both strong characters & have chemistry to spare. Their sexual encounters are definitely of the smokin' variety but never feel graphic. We get to watch as they circle each other, slowly moving toward their HEA & finding a place for themselves somewhere between the two worlds.
It's a fast paced, easy read that will take you out of your boring human world (unless you're a vamp..) for a few hours of pure escapism.

I received a copy of this book via Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed the story telling of Marie Treanor. Not only was this read a roller coaster for my emotions but it was exciting and fun. This is the first in the Blood Hunters Series but is the sequel to the Awakened by Blood trilogy. I did find it a bit frustrating that I felt a detachment from Elizabeth and Saloman who are apparently the main characters in the Awakened by Blood trilogy. I would highly suggest taking the time to read the trilogy first if you want a full understanding of these two. It doesn’t take away from the story yet my intrigue into their lives was very distracting.

Okay, so on to the first main character Mihaela. She is described as one tough cookie in the book several times and while she can definitely kick some vampire butt it seems that the main focus was to show how broken and hallow she truly was, almost too much. It needed a balance so that she didn’t sound weak and still keep her kick ass persona that she has going on. She was on her back a lot in the book and Oh can Treanor write a steamy sex scene. I still enjoyed Mihaela’s character and wanted to smack her a few times for her stubbornness.

Now on to Maximilian. He is a very old vampire and I really appreciated that his history was given in the book. He has been hidden away for years because of the guilt he has for betraying his maker over the desire to rule. Through his artist side you can tell that he has a lot of bottled up emotions and Mihaela is just the right person to help him come back to “life” and want to participate in the world again. Honestly, you can’t help but fall in love with Maximilian and that just makes his loving so much fun to read.

Maximilian and Mihaela are drawn to a child that is being chased through the streets of Scotland by vampires because of his telepathic powers that they want to use for evil. What? You didn’t think the book was just about the romance between Maximilian and Mihaela did you? Nope, Treanor gives a wonderful story line and puts it all together beautifully.

I definitely recommend this steamy read to those who love paranormal romance and sizzling love scenes. I will definitely be reading the next in the series and am contemplating on reading the Awakened by Blood trilogy as well.

Happy reading!

So this book is the opening book to a trilogy that from what I gathered is connected to another series, and as always, full disclosure, I have not read the other series. If you have read the other series and are reading this review, I might be missing out on some of the background information you have, but this book definitely stands on its own without reading the other series.

It’s been a while since I have read a vampire book, they were really my first love when I got into the urban fantasy genre, so it was nice to kind of get back to it. This particular vampire book focuses mainly on Miheala, who is a vampire hunter, which can definitely make things tricky when you start getting involved with vampires. I liked Miheala, she was definitely a character who was a bit more on the damaged side than most, but in spite of having a past, she is strong in the sense that she moves towards her goals and doesn’t back down. I always enjoy a character that is a bit on the tortured side.

As for Max, well he is kind of like Miheala in some ways. He too has the whole tortured soul (or non-soul) thing going on. And when Miheala and Max come together because of a third party, the definitely have some kind of attraction going on. I think what made this pairing work, at least in this book was that there was a lot of fighting the attraction. The two of them are on opposite sides of a very defined line, so there is a lot of build up between them by the end of the book. I have always kind of thought that the more build up you have towards a couple, the more explosive it ends up being int the end, so this whole dynamic really worked for me.

I would say what didn’t work for me was that the story line felt a little generic, or maybe the characters just felt like characters I had seen before. There were a lot of interesting little elements in the book, but overall the theme has been widely explored in the urban fantasy genre, and I didn’t feel like I got any real “new” or “fresh” take on the subject.

That being said, the book was still an enjoyable read, so if you like urban fantasy book, and especially if you like the forbidden vampire story line, then this book could definitely be one for you.

This is the first book of Treanor’s that I’ve had the pleasure of reading and I must say that I enjoyed it. =^-^=

Even though this is a sequel to Treanor’s first series of books, Awakened by Blood, I never once felt that I was missing any thing due to not having read the first trilogy. Treanor does a wonderful job of touching upon the important events in the first trilogy which lead to the events in this book and if anything, reading about them made me want to go and get the previous series just for the fun of it.

What I liked about this book was watching the relationship between Mihaela and Maximilian develop during the course of the plot. I loved the fact that both characters had real issues that they needed to overcome in order for their relationship to work. For Maximilian is was putting aside his guilt and the suffering he chose to inflict upon himself after betraying his maker and for Mihaela it was overcoming her hate and distrust of vampires and accepting the fact that not all vampires are evil. Needless to say, their relationship had its ups and downs. But there’s no denying that the chemistry between them was real.

I also liked the overall plot line. The idea of selective humans possessing psychic powers that vampires can manipulate and vampires teaming up with their former hunters in order to prevent the destruction of the world kept me reading long after I should have curled up for the night. It was easy to get drawn into the story and the characters.

The only thing that kept me from loving this book was the pacing itself felt slow. For all that I got lost in the pages and wanted to keep reading in order to find out what happened next, there were times where I felt like I had been reading for hours only to find out that I’d only read for 45 minutes. I’m not entirely sure what sparked this problem for me, but it was troubling because as I said the story was very interesting.

Regardless, fans of Treanor’s previous books will enjoy this one and it’s a great introduction for those readers just discovering her.

The first in a new series, this is also the first opportunity I have had to read this author’s work. Marie Treanor has managed to provide the necessary background information that readers would need to follow the story, and this book does stand alone without great difficulties in understanding.

This story works on the premise that Vampire Hunters and Vampires have now declared a truce, and the vampires are essentially and mostly peaceful. Yet, there are some bad seeds still walking the earth: and there are now humans possessed of psychic powers that are the ‘new thing’: good vampires want to possess them for their abilities, bad vampires want to use them.

What emerges in this story is a tale of conflict and loss: the world you believed you knew versus the changes that are coming. With the addition of a small child that is wanted by both good and evil vampires, and years of history behind them, the struggles for both main characters are well defined and displayed. Mihaela is a hunter, born and bred, and she isn’t willing or able to trust in the treaty or the gorgeous ancient vampire who professes to care for her.

Maximillian is an ancient, and near the top of the hierarchy. Yet he is haunted by his own guilt for the suffering he believes he has caused both his maker and others. As a pairing, these two are cleverly written and developed: each with solid and proven reasons to not trust in the other, yet some unknown element that makes them want to try.

A nice mix of romance, threat and action kept me intrigued and reading on. While the characters are beautifully developed and there are viable reasons and options for their behavior, the pacing was uneven and the tension seemed to ebb and flow without resolution for longer than necessary.
I was expecting a read that contained more edge of the seat moments, and while I didn’t receive those moments in great succession, I was intrigued and engaged for the entire read.

I received an eBook copy from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

First of all I'd like to thank the author and publisher for providing me with a copy of this book via netgalley, in return for an honest review.

So, I've not read that many vampire books, but I do enjoy some paranormal books. I wasn't sure what to expect from this book, the first in the Blood Hunters series by Marie Treanor, not having read any of the author's work previously. I must admit that I approached this book with more than a little trepidation, having heard all the raving about the Twilight series and not having heard of this series.

I needn't have been concerned because, from the very first chapter, this book captured my attention. Well, not so much captured my attention as slapped me round the face! Lead character Mihaela is a feisty vampire hunter determined to get even with the bloodsucker that murdered her family. She's also extremely likeable.

There's no smoke without fire, so, when Mihaela meets centuries-old Maximilian, there's understandably a bit of a standoff between vampire and hunter. Circumstances throw the distrusting pair into an uneasy alliance that inevitably dictates their physical closeness, and then sparks really do fly! Mysteriously brooding Maximilian is the perfect counterpart to feisty Mihaela, and so ensures a delicious game of cat and mouse, fraught with sexual tension.

Yes, there are graphic sex scenes in this book. But, they are without the crude use of language that made 50 Shades so cringeworthy to me. These are written in such a way as to capture all of the passion and none of the vulgarity of the former. I defy any woman reading this book not to wish for their very own Maximilian.

Aside from all the sex, there is actually a very good story here too. The classic fight between good and evil, although you may just be surprised as to who is on which side when the final battle comes. I'm really looking forward to reading the next book in the series and finding out where the story goes next.

This was a new to me author and I am really glad I took a chance to try someone new. I was pulled in because I found the cover art to be interesting and after reading the blurb it seemed like a fit. While I was not instantly into the story it did not take long for me to find myself falling into the narrative. The Hunters here were different from some of the others I had read about but were still familiar. I liked that the location was not in the U.S. or some other regular locale, that gave a little more edge for me since I had to work to visualize, also a good thing since it just drew me in more. I liked the characters from the start because I could feel who they were and what they were about right away, it made me care. There are multiple points of view instead of just one person so you can track the story.

Mihaela has been a hunter for most of her life, ever since they rescued her after her family was killed by a vampire in their home. As a result she hates all vampires regardless of what they may do that is not murderous, including saving her from certain death. Maximilian is a vampire with an unsavory past of betrayal and power grabbing. He exiled himself hundreds of years ago for his part in the overthrow of his friend and mentor Saloman, but has recently surfaced as Saloman attempts to forge an alliance with the Hunters for the betterment of all.

While Saloman attempts to keep his agenda on track with the Hunters and they are more or less cooperating, someone else has plans that would kill millions of people and bring civilization under the hand of a few deluded vampires. Mihaela and Maximilian find out about the plan by accident but plan to thwart it at all costs, particularly since they are trying to use a young boy to amplify their efforts.

This book had a lot of good stuff with good fights, hot sex, betrayals, and stinging revelations. Definitely worth reading and continuing on.

Blood Guilt is the first book in the new Blood Hunters series by Marie Treanor. This series is a sequel to the Awakened by Blood trilogy, This book can be read as a stand-alone but some things will just make more sense if you read the Awakened by Blood trilogy first. Mihaela was a secondary character in that series, and she plays the starring role in this book.

Mihaela is a vampire hunter who is a bit of a loner. She had had a traumatic childhood and she doesn't trust easily. She finds herself allied with a vampire named Maximillian to save a little boy from the vampire who murdered her family. Max also had a background role in the Awakened by Blood trilogy where he saved Mihaela's life.

Maximillian is tortured by his past. Him and Mihaela are both flawed characters who need someone to love. I love characters with “issues” - they are easier to relate to and they earn a soft spot in your heart more quickly. The characterization was great and Marie Treanor is an excellent writer. The pacing was good – it was quick enough to be exciting but not rushed. There was action and adventure along with romance, so this book had it all. Of course, my favorite part is always the romance aspect. There was plenty of sexual tension, steamy love scenes, and sweet romance.

It was nice seeing Elizabeth and Saloman from the Awakened by Blood series. I was a big fan of them and was a little sad to see their story end. I hope they will make another appearance in book #2 of this new series. I'm excited to see what happens next with Mihaela and Maximillian. If you are a fan of adult paranormal romance, then I definitely recommend this book!

Review: 3.5 stars
General: I think Blood Guilt had an absolutely wonderfully original plot from start to finish I never saw the next thing coming and truly enjoyed that. While they state this is a book 2, other things indicate this a book 1 in a spinoff so I am a little lost - either way be sure not to start with this one as there are details and backgrounds not fully discovered and discussed. However, based on the quality of the story telling and writing it would be safe to assume it is done prior and I will not let that reflect upon my rating of the book. That being said it had an original concept, but not terribly original players.

The chemistry in the books was top notch and I really did enjoy reading the interactions between Mihaela and Max. I enjoyed the nitty gritty details about their imperfections as well as it added a bit of "humanity" to them. I enjoyed the book as a whole and will definitely be checking out the next in series to see how it pans out.

Characters: Mihaela- Mihaela had a very original name but she felt a lot like a stock character to me. She was "tough as nails" and broken and hollow from her past. She was well written but I didn't think she any different than the other vampire hunter females floating around the book world. Her reactions were perfectly written though.

Max- Max isa tortured vampire. I felt he had the more intriguing background of the two as I'm yet to read his particular reason for guilt. A tortured vampire over his existence isn't totally abnormal though.

Miheala is a fearless vampire hunter, who is haunted by loneliness and the death of her family when she was young.Miheala and the worlds hunters are having to adjust to the new world order were you only kill vampires if they prove themselves to be a threat. When her long time friend and team leader Kornard comes to her with a proposal she must make a choose between what she feels is right and her loyalty to her friend, the person how has saved her life more than once.

Miheala decides to take a vacation in Scotland, when she sees a little boy being chased in the streeets of Edinburgh, she decides to follow the boy and find out whats going on,but once there she sees two vampires from her past , Gavril is the one who killed her family and the other is Maximilian the second strongest vampire alive and who also saved her life once, and it looks like he will need her to return the favor. Miheala and Maximilian will have to team up to save a powerful little boy and to pervent a vampire induced earthquake that could kill millions. Will Miheala ever stop fighting her feeling for maximillian?Maximilian struggles to accept his past, will he ever be able to put it behind him? will they be able to trust each other to save the boy and to stop the earthquake before it's to late?

Blood Guilt was captivating, I couldn't put it down. I loved the characters, some parts of the storyline were similar to other books that I've read but it didn't take away from the story at all. I can't wait for book two!!!

This was a really good story, well written. Unique style of word use.
howeverNothing new in this tale of vampires.
Same theme as many vamp books if not a little old fashion in theory. You know the good ole stake, day sleeping, super speed etc.
So, if you are into the repetitive yet historical tale of vamps this is a good read!!
I loveMax! he is absolutely on my top list of favourite male vampires. I liked how Marie made him feel. I liked Miheala; her human/huntress side was balanced nicely with her vampire attraction and disgust.
Personally being a sci fi chic I felt the story could have been amazing if the science was let out of the box a bit more. I would have rather read the plan orchestrated by Gavril implemented and then we'd be immersed in tension and survival. A real fight with all sides scrambling to recover and live. There was so much scientific mentionings that I felt we were going to have a real life and death for Max and Miheala and their shared love for Robbie. Nope.
Which brings me to the love story. It was sweet. Lite if you will. I have a personal preference when a Being is several hundred years old he should know a few tricks in the bedroom. Max made love like a human male. fair enough he was human once. BUT, I guess I'm used to reading vampires with a more animalistic, erotic flare to their affairs of body and soul. Alas, just need to pick up a Joey Hill novel for that.
The sex scenes where loving. Not feverish, or desperate, or hot.
After all that, it's still a great story and well written.

I loved the Awakened by Blood trilogy when I read it last year. And I was excited when I when I found out about this sequel. And I was not disappointed. This is a great new story with an interesting new plot line and twists.

Blood Guilt takes off after the events of the last book in the trilogy but can be read as a standalone easily. You would miss out on some of the history and previous events but they only background to the story here.

Mihaela was an interesting secondary character in the first series. So I really enjoyed seeing her get her own story and finding out more about her character. Maximilian was also introduced in the last series. Here we get to find out more about him as well.

The setting is well done and the story is interesting and action packed. It really keeps you moving and you feel like you are on the same race against time as the characters.

I really enjoyed this new book in the world previously created and liked getting to know more about this previously introduced characters. It was also fun to get to see other characters from the previous series and see what they are up to now. It helps to satisfy my curiosity because I always want to know what happens to them next.

If you like paranormal stories, that include romance, action and adventure. Then this is one you want to pick up and read. You wont be disappointed. And you will join the rest of us in anxiously awaiting the next book.

I have to say that I liked this book much more than I thought I would. While the book is part of a series, it comes to a definite end and can be read as a stand-alone novel.

In a world where vampires are known only as a myth, Mihaela is a hunter. She hunts and kills vampires in an attempt to keep society safe. She began training as a little girl, after her parents and baby sister were killed by a vampire. She doesn't like or trust vampires. But with the awakening of an ancient vampire, it is suddenly a new world.

Vampires are now working with hunters and human deaths by vampire have drastically dropped. It is because of this new detente that Mihaela finds herself working with the notorious vampire Maximilian.

Mihaela and Maximilian do not trust each other but can't deny the sexual attraction between them. Mihaela is driven by years of hatred toward vampires and can't seem to completely trust Maximilian, with good reason. Maximilian, aka, Maximilian the Betrayer has betrayed those he loved the most.

I really found myself enjoying the story and liked the lore Marie Treanor established. Her vampires aren't all powerful but believably flawed. Of course there is a big, bad enemy they must defeat. But I see the need for a villain, as it drives the lore and plot line.

I gave it four stars and recommend the book as a pleasant read.
