Linda Winstead Jones is the bestselling author of more than eighty romance novels and novellas across several sub-genres. She’s easily distracted (Look! A squirrel!) and writes the stories that speak to her in the moment. Paranormal. Romantic Suspense. Twisted Fairy Tales. Cowboys. Her books are for readers who want to escape from reality for a while, who don’t mind the occasional trip into another world for a laugh, a chill, the occasional heartwarming tear. Where will we go next?
I enjoyed Running Scared, it was a good start to the Last Chance Heroes series..
Livvie walks in on what she thinks is a robbery and finds her neighbour dead but before she dies she promises to take care of her little girls. Livvie is recovering from finding out that her fiancee now ex was a cheating rat, she seems to make bad judgments when it comes to men and makes a even bigger one when she takes the girls to their father, a creepy General who she finds out won't take no for an answer, before she can escape she encounters Cal.
Four years before Cal was sent in by her over-protective Uncle Max to save her from one of her mistakes, a guy who turned out to be a drug dealer and now Cal is there again. Cal makes no bones of the fact that he doesn't like her and considers her a spoiled princess, it is also fairly obvious he thinks she's the General's lover.
They try to escape but Cal is injured and instead of leaving him, Livvie stays behind and finds help for him, for some reason the villagers seem to worship Cal. Cal has been in the country before and hates it, he worked for the General once lured by his cousin who he thought he loved but who turned out to be like him.
The book was not bad. Cal works for the Benning Agency and has been for years trying to find his sister who ran away from his abusive step-father. He has a lot of scars and his life is tough. What I enjoyed was seeing Livvie take care of tough Cal and the scene when her uncle finds them together and what happens later really cracks me up, especially when Cal finally gave in.
The book's plot wasn't new, a jungle rescue, a tall, dark and brooding hero with "issues" but I liked the execution and the last part added another .5 stars for me.
A can't put down page turner with a red hot man, a gorgeous woman, a tropical country, the entire army of said country trying to capture you. What's not to love......
This book was ok. It was very farfetched and that is really what turned me off about this book. Honestly there are much better romances out there.
I will say that the author's writing is fine. I can't complain that the grammar is poor or that the sentence structure is bad. As with the author’s writing, I can't say that the author's vocabulary is particularly extensive, but neither is it elementary.
As already mentioned, the plot is much too farfetched. Everything about the plot is just too much. As a result, the characters aren't believable. Their interactions don't ring true and the characters themselves simply don't have that aura of reality about them that is so necessary to make a book readable.
I would not recommend even as a beach read. Your time would be much better spent on another book.
