Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield and their brother, Steven, are visiting Wild West Town with Grandma and Grandpa Wakefield. It's the best trip they've ever taken. First they change into Western costumes to get into the spirit of the old days. Then they eat in a saloon, visit a mine, and pan for gold! On their way back to town, their stagecoach is held up by the meanest outlaw Wild West Town has ever seen. Steven has been bragging all weekend about how brave he is. Will he be the hero? Or will Jessica and Elizabeth save the day?
Francine Paula Pascal was an American author best known for her Sweet Valley series of young adult novels. Sweet Valley High, the backbone of the collection, was made into a television series, which led to several spin-offs, including The Unicorn Club and Sweet Valley University. Although most of these books were published in the 1980s and 1990s, they remained so popular that several titles were re-released decades later.
The Twins and the Wild West Jessica and Liz’s grandmother is taking them on a trip and Jessica has overpacked her bag because she doesn’t know where their going. Steven (whose going too) says he knows where their going, but he won’t tell. Jessica can’t get it out of him. Their grandparents then arrive. Her grandpa gives them a hint and motions to his cowboy hat. There going to Wild West Town.
On the ride they’re there a little hyper so their grandparents tell them to look at license plates. This doesn’t help. S oon their there. The place looks like a Western movie (or West World). The first stop is a clothing store. Mr. Ferguson helps them pick out the appropriate clothes. Jessica picks a pink dress. Liz picks out red cowboy boots, a red skirt with fringes, and a vest. Her grandpa picks out a tie that looks like a shoe string, a vest, and hat. (Liz also gets a hat). Then they go to the saloon for lunch. Jessica and Steven try to get soda. Steven wants root beer. They get milk. Grandma isn’t fooled. Grandpa orders three glasses of foot bear and they know they’re getting root bear. Steven asks can he go talk to the cowboys and his grandpa says yes. Liz wants to go to, but Steven says no. Girls didn’t do anything in those days but cook and sew. Their grandfather lets Steven go by himself. Jessica wants to ride the ponies and their grandmother says only if it’s a quiet pony. But their father says if that’s what they want, they’ll get pony rides. All of a sudden, Jessica gets a rope around her and its Steven. Steven says it must be so boring for girls back then. Steven says girls are so dumb. Liz thinks she’ll make him take back his words.
After lunch they take a tour of the town. They see a blacksmith putting shoes on a horse, a woman working an old-fashioned printing press, and help two men fix a wagon wheel. They also see a post office, a general store, and a barbershop. In the stage coach office, they see a telegraph machine. Jessica wants a souvenir horse and says them get them when they’re on trips. Her grandmother says she might find something better. Her Grandfather says he’ll give them each three dollars but choose carefully. He says before they do that there’s something he wants them to sdo. He talks them to take pictures. It’s a long day and after a while they’re all tired out. Jessica says they can stay up til nine but Grandma says their mother said eighty thirty. Grandpa says they should turn in they have a big day head of them, but he says it’s a rurprise.
The next morning, they find out their going on a stage coach to visit a gold mine. Steven and Liz get to ride on top with the driver whose name is Jesse. When they get out, Jesse shows them a tunnel and tells them about bandits. He then shows them how to pan for gold. Jessica kept getting the hem of her dress wet and Steven teases her. Jessica and Liz look at each other. They’ll show him girls can do anything.
Jessica wants to walk off, but Grandma says stay where she can see her. Jessica then starts to vent to Liz about how over protective Grandma is being. On the way back, Grandma won’t let them ride on the top. Jesse has to deliver some of the gold nuggets. All the kids are sulking. Grandpa is nervous about the package. Steven says if there were any bandits, he’d show them. Jessica says he’s just a bunch of talk, then they hear gun shots and the horses take off. The coach stops and a man orders them out and tells them it’s a stick up.
Grandpa tells them just do what he says. The Grandparents tell the kids to stay in the coach, but Black Bill says kids don’t get special treatment. Black Bill demands they give him all their money and don’t try anything. Jessica tries to stand up to Black Bill and tells him he’s not nice. When he asks what she’s going to do about she kicks him in the shins. They then yell for Steven to get his lassos. In no time flat Steven ties, him up. Jessica tells himshe told him girls could do anything. They then find out it’s an act. Their grandparents tell them they wanted it to be a surprise. Their proud of them, but tell them not to do it with a *real* robber. The sheriff makes them honorary deputies and gives them three silver stars. He makes them make a pledge to carry out the duties of West Town. Then they go for ice cream. They all toast to their time in West Town. They say they want to come back and their grandparents say their parents will take them, but the kids say they’d rather come with them.
The last thing they do is go to a rodeo. All the kids are looking at their badges. Jessica says she wants to be a cow girl when she grows up when she sees the ponies doing tricks. “Black Bill” is in the show. When it’s over they ride ponies. Turns out Steven is very good riding a pony. After this they all go home.
My Thoughts Not as bad as I’d thought it be for a book about a Wild West Town. I didn’t think I’d like it but then I liked West World so you just never know.

Sweet Valley Kids 10 - The Twins and the Wild West Neds parents are taking the twins and Steven away to a Wild West adventure park for the weekend (which sounds awesome - do these exist?). And while Grandpa is indulging their every whim, Grandma is being a biatch, no other way to put it. She wants Liz to act more like a girl, says no to everything, with an exemption of some of the stuff Steven wants to do. I had to look up her story in the Wakefield saga to see what her deal was... she was a PoW from 15-19 😱 So okay, I’ll allow it. Anywayyyy... Steven is going on and on about how weak girls are etc, super annoying even to a grown woman 😡 But when their carriage gets hijacked by a ‘bandit’ the twins attack him to save their Grandma 😬 Bit awkward. Steven also can’t ride a pony, Liz notes gleefully. My rating - 5/10 - G’ma Wakefield was a downer but what a cool holiday place! #sweetvalley #sweetvalleykids #sweetvalleytwins #unicornclub #sweetvalleyjnrhigh #sweetvalleyhigh #sweetvalleysenioryear #sweetvalleyuniversity #sweetvalleyseries #bookreview
In this one, the twins and Steven are taken to Wild West Town by their grandparents. The sub plot here is the sexism of Steven and Grandma Wakefield, and it isn't addressed very well, leaving the message very unclear. I would have liked a more direct condemnation of the idea that girls can't do things that boys can do—especially when that thing is something as ridiculous as wearing a particular kind of dress-up.
3.5* --------------- Steven and the twins take a surprise trip with their paternal grandparents. They end up at Wild West World. All the while, Steven keeps acting like girls played no real part in the real Wild West. But, the Twins show him, when they capture a bandit with very little help from him, earning all 3 children deputy sheriff badges.
The twins & Steven visit a Western Ranch & get to dress & live the West. They even pan for gold & outsmart a stagecoach bandit who tries to steal the gold.
