This comprehensive book encourages future educational leaders to be proactive rather than reactive, and arms them with an understanding of educational policy and the important political theories upon which it is based. Coverage addresses theory, analysis, development, and implementation of educational policy, with the knowledge base of the typical reader in mind. It explores the reasons for change in educational policy, ways to track its evolution, and techniques for influencing its ultimate destination. Includes updated statistics drawn from the 2000 Census and explores economic changes expected from the business cycle downturn and the effect of war. Features new news stories for analysis—related to chapter content as well as key current issues, including the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001; New case studies on the teaching of Darwinian evolution and on parent revolts against state testing programs; An entire chapter devoted to policy values and ideology. Extensive coverage on educational policy at the state level. For future educators and educational leaders.
A work that speaks to the needs of educational leaders to move the system ahead. The book is based on a set of precepts: (1) Educational leaders must understanbd policy and the policy process; (2) Educationa leaders must understand basic theory regarding education policy making; (3) Education leaders must understand power and its use (and abuse); (4)It is critical to understand values inherent in policy; (5) State government is an important player in the process (although this is hardly a revolutionary statement).
I read this as required for my School Leadership certification. It has all the information you need to understand education policy. Excellent resource.
3.5/5. Super dry, but the content doesn’t really allow for much otherwise. Great info for people in the educational field wanting to learn more about how we got to where we are with policy in education.
As an educator I find books like this can be frustrating. They feel out of touch and silly. As someone deeply interested in educational policy there was, however, a lot to take away from this text. It isn't the sort of book that keeps the reader entertained, but it is indeed full of valuable information, some of which is common sense, and some of which lends itself to the successful creation and implementation of policy in education. A must read for the policy driven leader of education reform.
This is a great book on Education Policy. Easy-to-read, clear concepts with real-life examples, and covers the broad strokes of the education policy landscape.
