New story arc! The planet Shu-Torin, (introduced in the Darth Vader Annual), is revolting. Darth Vader is tasked with leading a military assault. Has Vader's rise to glory begun?
He didn't capitalize on the events of Vader down. And instead is following the story of the annual issue. So yeah looks like we will be blasting 3 star ratings for a while. It seems the attention is shifted on yet another of Cylo's new warriors. And this time it's the one that controls the drones. I didn't see this one contradicting or disrespecting Vader. But Cylo and his twins are. I am not sure how long will Vader tolerate them.
This issue started lime Vader Down did not happen. The only remnanta of the past arc were Karbin's body and a captured Aphra. Hopefully, this war in a mining planet goes with a deeper story. Otherwise, it would feel as a filler.
That dude Cylo is back on the picture, and I don't like anything about him. The twins are there too and they are annoying as ever (I don't know why).
Although scarce with action and Sith saber skill, we get to see some character interactions. Vader's personality here in the comics is exactly how you would imagine him. He is a proud and calculated person with zero sense humor!
Vader proves he really can be an excellent character, who is more calculating than anyone realizes. He has a quiet way of going about things, at least in the comics, and finishes up looking stronger than before.
The more I read of this series, the more I enjoy it. The overarching theme of Vader having to prove himself to the Emperor and thwart various uprisings and conflicts throughout the galaxy after he was embarrassed by the failure of the Death Star... well... it's just really believable. It also gives Vader plenty of chances to assert his power, which is always awesome.
Picking up the Shu-Torun arc that was started in Vader Annual 1, which I struggled getting invested in - artwork having a good deal to do with it - this issue really revitalized my interest in the setting and plot. Mr. Larroca’s beautiful artwork is light years ahead of Mr. Yu’s (for my taste). Looking forward to closing out the mini-arc in the subsequent issues.
Absolutely loved it. - 100%, 5 out of 5 star rating.
These comics are amazing.
I accidently skipped the Darth Vader annual, that on the timeline should have been read before this one, so I'll need to jump back minus one to catch up on that. Regardless, did not impact the excellency of this Vader #16 comic.
This is the kind of series that you do not want to end.
#16 - “You have been seeking Commander Karbin. I found him.” [Vader reports to the Emperor and drags in the corpse of Karbin.] “Are these light-saber wounds, Vader?” - Emperor “You wish me to prove myself, Master. Give me a fight worthy of my time.” - Vader
The new story-arc in the Vader comic (the Sho-Torun War) doesn't really work. Vader travels to random planet to murder existing royal family on resource rich-planet and install new queen. Other than enjoyable banter between 000 and Beetee (two homicidal droids), Vader doesn't do much.
(Number At Bottom) This issue was just okay with regular art. The only real compelling part is Queen Trios relationship with Vader. Nothing spectacular.
This issue seems to take place right after Vader down, and it continues a plot thread that began in the Darth Vader Annual. I initially thought that that annual would take place between Vader Down and The Shu-Torun War since Aphra was absent, but it seems to have taken place prior to Vader Down according to the opening crawl. So when did it take place in relation to the Shadows and Secrets arc? I worry that this will never be answered. With Aphra gone, Queen Trios is here to fill the void. And it will be a different dynamic from the looks of it. So if Darth Vader was The Doctor, then this would be his new companion. Some familiar bounty hunters are back, but there also appear to be a few new ones. It appears that they will have a role to play in the next arc of Jason Aaron's Star Wars, Rebel Jail. I love that it does not matter to Vader whether or not Aphra lives.

This title is simply great!!! The art, story arc, and characters are a mix of the nostalgic ones in the earlier films, with a more complex and developed story line following A New Hope.
Probably one of the best series put out by Marvel to date that is Star Wars related.
Very Interesting book, I really loved it the end was supriseing, also there weren't any comments down, so it's fast reading book! I'm glad that I had chance to be from the evil part!
Darth Vader is back on the war path. This new story arc will have some familiarities to those that read the standalone single-issue Darth Vader Annual #1.
After surviving a trap set for him by a rival, Vader is given a new assignment to quash a rebellious group of ore barons on the planet Shu-Torun. Vader must work with the Queen he put in power to bring this rebellion to heel. And he must also deal with the fact that Doctor Aphra has been captured by the rebels.
Vader has definitely regained his confidence this issue! I guess surviving alone against a huge rebel force can do that for you! He actually stands up to Palpatine a bit and handles the Shu-Toran ore barons with an unmatched ruthlessness. While he understands the tenuous position the queen is in, he doesn't allow her to manipulate him or play on any sympathies he may have (not that he has ANY at this point!). He makes a few brutal decisions, but its completely in his character to do so!
Salvador Larroca's art is brilliant this issue! Vader is menacing and the locations are fantastically portrayed! Some of the most amazing art in Star Wars, for certain! And I can't say enough about that amazing cover by Mark Brooks! Just awesome!
Fantastic series that lives up to its main character! Some of the best Star Wars reading around!
