How well do you see what you are looking at? Practice and improve your observation habits with this little book, and learn how to enrich your life by seeing how interesting the world around you can be Look at photographs from nature and find out how much you can see when you observe life like an expert does For readers and nature lovers 9 to 12 years.
The author of "Looking and Seeing: ..." believes that learning to observe in a scientifically rigorous way should begin early in a student's career, and I agree wholeheartedly. Students love to research and learn about plants and animals, they enjoy being bombarded with facts and images, but their purposeful observation skills are lacking.
I thoroughly enjoyed leafing through the pages, honing my own observation skills, and flipping to the back of the book to see how well I had done. I can't wait to share this with my class and plan to add it to our summer reading list to encourage quiet outdoor nature time.
Better quality images (some were great, most were just good, none of them were poor) would've added another star to my rating.

This review is from: Looking and Seeing: Learning to Observe (Paperback) I feel like this book is a gift to the world! How often do we take a cursory glance at the most beautiful things in nature without understanding or even registering the amazing detail? Children in particular are deeply at risk of becoming jaded and inattentive in this fast-paced, high-tech world. What I love about this book is it helped me to take a second look at famliar things. A nature walk is no longer just a walk. It's a world of discovery. And I am thrilled to have this book as a catalyst for discussion with my young son. I believe it will encourage him to be creative, inquisitive, and discerning. The pictures are fantastic. Teachers, especially, would be wise to add this book to their collection.
With the current emphasis to provide hands-on learning activities in all elementary classrooms in our state with the new National Common Core Standards that have been adopted, is perfect for children in third to fifth grade. It gives guidance to ways to observe the things that are the same and different in the natural setting with emphasis on noticing details to make accurate descriptions. One of the first steps in learning about the world around you is to observe what you see and recognize how to describe them. In Looking & Seeing: Learning to Observe the choice of pictures and the accurate comparisons that can be checked at the back of the text are a plus to keep the students interest level high while they are learning important observation and recording skills.
