It's decision time for Kai. Stay or go. He was just getting comfortable being a houseguest at Sayaka's house, but his nemesis keeps coming back -- and this time, they weren't going to go away without a fight. They now have a new school teacher, Ms. Karino -- she seems awfully friendly with Kai. Do they know each other? And what is she doing here? Will Sayaka finally admit her feeling towards Kai?
Kai's past has come back to haunt him and it's affecting Sayaka.
If you haven't read the bold print yet, Takeshi loves Sayaka, Sayaka loves Kai, Kai likes/loves Sayaka but can't admit it because he's a former vampire hunter turned vampire who's being hunted by his own family.
Points to this one for actually seeming genuine in its emotions. Except Takeshi. Precious baby sunshine boy needs some love.
At this point, I think I've just accepted this as mediocre at best. The battle was super short-lived, another character was tossed in to add a romantic rivalry and revenge story, and once again, the vampire proves to be the most interesting character. I don't know much about her, but at least she has a brain, an attitude, and some personality. Better than most of the other characters in this.
So we got a hint on our favorite vamp's past. But I can't say there is nothing remarkable at that. I wish the drawing that were more complexed but that's all I got.
This is the best of the first three volumes, because the interactions with Kai's past finally begin to move in. More becomes clear about his past, other than his motivations, which are still unclear. The introduction of two monster hunters, along with more about their relationship to Kai, made this volume zip along, storywise. The emotions of the various characters become more obvious and interesting. The "romance" element changes from a triangle into some weird quadrilateral thing, with real vs. apparent ages beginning to come into play. Vampires don't age, you see, so one of the characters is 20 years out of date with their apparent physical age. I hope the series continues to improve in this manner.
