Kevin Carrigan is a former elementary school teacher and a proud member of the U.S. Army Reserve. He lives in Portsmouth, Virginia. "The Last Election" is his first novel.
I read this several months ago, and that this story is still so fresh in my head says a great deal about how much I loved this book. This was a great political thriller with a bit of a paranormal twist.
Just as the title states, the events in this story centers around the final presidential election in the United States before the alleged end time of 2012. There is a lot of action, and parts of it almost had an Indiana Jones feel with archeology and ancient prophecies and mysteries. The plot was wonderful, but I really felt like the characters drove this story.
I freely admit that when I read a book heavy in politics I find myself trying to figure out the political leanings of the author. I know it doesn't really matter but I still do it, and many times I can peg a definite lean one way ot another. Mr. Carrigan, however, did not let anything show. The story was a very good example of the impartial narrarator.
There were interesting back-stories for most of the characters, and I did have to re-read passages a few times to commit the deatails to memory. That might be due to my personal problem with names, but I did feel there was a bit too much information given in chunks at times. Even so, I did like the back-stories because I enjoy knowing about the 'why' behind actions.
The edning was not what I was expecting, which I count as a good thing. I won;t spoil the party, but I will say that this book is not the typical 'end of the world' story. Five stars from me, and recommended for anyone that enjoys a well written and unique political thriller. If there is a follow-up I will absolutely be buying.
This was amazing, crazy, and exhilarating. There are elements of action, suspense, romance, politics, and much more in the story. At first I had difficulty keeping up with all the different characters, because there are many, and most of them are also interconnected. However, it got easier as I delved farther into the story. The author did a great job of keeping interest, especially with all of the action. I did see some possible connections to President Obama, but the events were quite unrelated to him that it was easy to read the character as just President Bonsam.
Possibly the worst, most unhinged novel I have ever read. Once I realized that it was nothing more than an infantile rant against President Obama I only continued reading to see how far he would take it. Answer: way way too far, rediculously too far.
Pros: written in a very easy to read and follow style; fast paced so it does not feel as bad as it is. the author is not a bad writer, just filled with bad ideas.
Cons: thinly veiled disdain for President Obama that leads in increasingly unbelievable plot elements. Forget the "supernatural" elements of Mayan mysticism, that I could easily forgive, it's supposed to be beyond rational belief. No, it is almost every other of the non-mystic elements that defy not only belief, but reality, common sense and logic. I will not give spoilers, but absolutely ridiculous twist after twist leads to an ending that would be comical if it were not so visceral. The author let his hatred and fear spiral onto a pit of stupidity.
the author forgot one of the basic needs for good fiction, "suspension of disbelief." When we cannot lose ourselves in the story because it continually ejects us, all hope for a fulfilling experience is lost. I would not recommend this novel to anyone for any reason, except maybe as an example of how to waste time you can never recover to your life. I will say, I was compelled to keep reading, thinking that maybe there would be a fun payoff. No such luck.
I stuck with it simply so I could see how outrageous the ending was, but much of this book was so far afield of what my BS meter could buy, there is no way I could even suggest it to someone who was looking for an impossible, fantasy, political thriller, if ever such a thing existed.
Good thing I wasn't in public because after the half way point I started laughing aloud. Apologies to the author, but he's probably already heard that this. It was bad...very bad.
I've gotten some excellent books for kindle in the daily freebie promotions that authors and publishers run. Sad to say that this was not one of them.
The beginning of this book was so interesting and fast paced I was hooked, then it became so scattered I couldn't keep track of who was where or what was happening.I believe the author tried to capture to many ideas in one book. We know that 2012 and the Mayans are a big deal right now, but it just became too bizarre in such a good beginning plot. I think this author has great potential, but The Last Election became too scrambled and too many characters for my taste.
This was very interesting. It's the year 2012 and the year of the "Last Election",Pres. Bonsam is the current president and will not give up his power, even though the election has passed and a new party has won... This really made me think of how much "power" a President has and what he is capable of doing if he refuses to give up his seat.
Ths is a cool political thriller. A very entertaining novel. This book has wonderful characters and an interesting non-predictable ending. I was hooked from the start and couldn't wait to see what happens next. It's very well written and it would make an interesting movie.
A president with an unbelievable agenda, a cult like group of followers. Good overruns with evil, the evil triumphs or does he. Cannot wait for second book to be published.
I liked this book, but I didn't like how the ending was rushed. The whole book was building you up for the ending then it just stopped. I guess the writer left it open for a possible series.
