Sequel to "A Family for Carter Jones". Kate Sheriden fell in love with rich Sean Flaherty, while he was trying his hand at mining. When he unexpectedly left to go home, she was pregnant. She and her sister Jennie cope with it, but Jennie writes to Sean and he returns and marries her and takes her back to his rich, unwelcoming family in San Francisco. It doesn't work and Kates returns to Nevada. Sean finally wakes up and comes after her again. They finally work it out, but it sure takes forever! Nice story.
This is one of those books that keeps you on the edge. How many strikes before your out for good.
In the first book we see Kate is pregnant by a scoundrel who then left town. She gives birth to baby Caroline. Lyle Wentworth stays by her side at the hospital and tries everything to get her to give the baby up for adoption.
We find that scoundrel back in town in this book. Sean Flaherty will have to do alot more then speak blarney to get Kate Sheridan to trust him a second time. He has returned to Vermillion Nevada to marry Kate and take her back to San Francisco.
Eighteen months ago he had spent 3 months trying to mine and find his own riches outside of his dads control and 3 months with the lovely Kate. He received a letter from her sister, Jennie, informing him that he has a daughter. Kate knows nothing of the letter.
When Kate finally believes that Sean came back just for her, even though he has not said he loves her, she agrees to marry him. He must have come back all on his own.
Once in San Francisco Kate's life changes drastically. Her daughter is put in a nursery rather then her room, she has her own room with a door into her husbands, a snobby new mother in law and an indifferent father in law. The house is huge and she is facing it alone as it seems Sean prefers his time spent with his buddies at the gaming hall.
She is not one of these type of people. Nonny (grandma) is the only positive thing there and she teaches Kate how to dress, do her hair, and the proper dinner eating patterns. Kate is a success at her first ball until Sean's drunk friend tells her she was a fun and easy past time for Sean when he was mining. A few days later she finds out about the letter Jennie sent- thanks to mama Harriet who wants a better match for her son. Strike two. Kate goes home. Sean don't come. Two months pass.
Sean comes after he had enough of drinking every night trying to forget how he's a failure to his father and his wife.
He has to fight hard to once again prove himself to Kate.
Between a severe case of the flu hitting town and working at the mine, Sean finally grows up and understands true responsibility and love.
