James L. Rubart is a 28 year old trapped in an older man's body, who loves to water ski and dirt bike with his two grown sons. He's the bestselling, Christy Hall of Fame, Carol, INSPY, and RT Book Reviews award winning author of ten novels and loves to send readers on mind-bending stories of spiritual freedom. He's also an audio book narrator and co-owner of The Rubart Writing Academy. He lives with his amazing wife on a small lake in eastern Washington.
With an amazingly original idea, James L. Rubart does another wonderful allegory that is both eye-opening and riveting. Though it may be somewhat of a fantasy, Soul's Gate will make you think differently about the world around you. I don't want to say too much, because I don't want to give away the book's plot, so I will just say this: This book is definitely worth reading!
I received an advance readers copy of this book through Netgalley.
At first I was excited about to start this book because thoughts of Frank Peretti's early books came to mind when I looked at the premise. But, about halfway through this book, I realized that while the concepts were similar the story seemed a lot more personal. The author's note at the end of the book claims that while there is certainly an element of spiritual warfare in book, the story is more about Freedom. I couldn't agree more! That was the thing that struck me while reading the book; the entire story was about finding the freedom in life that we were born to live with. This isn't to say that there was anything wrong with the Peretti books (I love them and think that they are among the best books I've read,)this story just feels more... real. And that's saying something when you're talking about a book which you have to suit up in a great deal of suspension of disbelief when reading it. While there are certainly spiritual aspects of this book which are real, even the author says that some of them are just part of his imagination. Can a person truly enter another person's soul? The author states that he doesn't really think so (even if this is the basis of the book.) That being said, I will definitely be suggesting this to people and trying to get people to read it. It wasn't until after finishing this book that I realized that there was at least one other book written by the author which I had wanted to read before, and I will most certainly be picking that one up soon. James L Rubart has a great imagination and can tell a pretty good story. Give this one a chance if you want to read a good narrative, and maybe have your beliefs challenged.
I don't know why I keep reading Jim Rubart's books--every time, he seems to "read my mail." Seriously--Soul's Gate is a phenomenal book, and I think it might just be one of my favorites by Rubart (ROOMS changed my life and will always hold a top spot on my Faves list). The characters are engaging and the story itself just sort of blows the mind. Most importantly, I found the premise very challenging personally. How often do we let those lies we hear in our head control and drive our actions? How often do we NOT pray when we feel like we should? This is a fascinating look at intercessory prayer, giving tangibility to a non-tangible (sometimes) aspect of faith. Very well done!
Loved this book. Jim's hit his stride and I can't wait to read the rest of this series. I found myself thinking late into the night after reading this one. My thoughts on God were challenged and how I might be missing "seeing" so much. The suspense was great and I some twists I didn't see coming.
Wow. This is one of the most unique books I've read. And it's pushed it's way into my top 5 favorite books. I wasn't quite sure what to expect with this one, and honestly, wasn't really sure what I thought about it about it even around the midpoint. But as things came together and the story moved forward, it made a deep impact in my spirit. I loved the characters, loved the suspense, loved the story line, but this book actually stirred my faith. I don't want to give any spoilers but will just say it's about a group of four, who have their eyes opened to the spiritual realm and the realities of the battle between the Kingdom of God and the kingdom of darkness for our hearts. It's about healing, freedom, intercession, and battling in the spirit. I'm very careful with books that delve into the spiritual realm, and found this one to be well done. It's heavy but not "spooky" or weird at all. I really loved it. I'll be ordering the next two books in the series and will start reading them as soon as I can get my hands on them! This book really did stir my faith. Last note-don't miss the authors note in the back. He actually answered a few of my questions I kept wishing I could ask him!
Oh. My. Goodness. I freaking LOVED this, and I highly recommend it. It was funny, thrilling, and overall amazingly well written!! I can't wait to read the other three books by this author that I own!!
Usually I balk at the favorite question. What's your favorite song, color, book? Usually my answer is, it depends on my mood. But only one day after finishing it, I'm ready to declare James Rubart's Soul's Gate my favorite novel of all time.
In deciding if I was sure to make this bold declaration, I started mentally scrolling through some of my past favorite novels. Then of my favorites, I narrowed that list down to the truly life-changing ones that I bought multiple copies of and forced my friends and relatives to read: The Passion of Mary-Margaret, Arena, Embrace Me, Rooms, A Stray Drop of Blood, and Havah. Every one of these books was beautifully written and spiritually powerful. I highly recommend all of them. But as I considered Soul's Gate, I realized that it combined the best elements of each of these.
Like The Passion of Mary-Margaret, it illustrated an intimate relationship with God and characters willing to give everything for Christ. Like Arena, it offered an insightful glimpse into the spiritual realm and spiritual warfare. Like Embrace Me it cut through all the b.s. of religion and pierced straight to the true heart of Christianity. Like Rooms, it demonstrated the beauty of inner healing. Like A Stray Drop of Blood, it portrayed the amazing, overwhelming power available in the blood of Christ. And like Havah, it spoke to me right where I was at that moment and transformed my life. Oh sure, there are novels I love because they're beautiful or funny or touching, but these are the ones that have affected me the most. And I can't ignore books like the old Frank Peritti novels or The Shack that impacted me as well, but I feel like Soul's Gate went to a new place for a new time.
As I mentioned, this book was exactly what I needed exactly when I needed it. While I loved Rooms, it mostly dealt with issues I'd already tackled and revelations I'd already received. Book of Days had more impact on me, but this novel went far beyond. I so needed this infusion of faith and power in my life right now. This reminder that the spirit world is more real than the illusory one all around me that presses on my senses day in and day out. And I needed to have my fighting spirit revived. Another wonderful aspect of this book, which I've never found in a novel before, was the direct link between quantum physics, faith, and the spiritual realm. I'm a closet physics geek, so this delighted me to no end.
My husband is halfway through the book as I'm writing this, and I sent a gift copy to my mom. No doubt, I'll soon be buying lots of extra copies and wrangling all my loved ones into reading it. I not only highly recommend this book, I'd say it's a must read for every Christian. I'm sure I will read this one again and again. No matter where you are in your walk with the Lord, I think you'll find something in this book to minister to you. And even for non-Christians, I can't help but think you'd enjoy this peek at what Christianity was truly meant to be.
The novel challenges you to believe what the Bible really says and to tap into the supernatural power available in the Holy Spirit. The author says in the back that his main purpose for the book was to demonstrate freedom in Christ, but there was no way to get there without looking at spiritual warfare as well. From healing, to prophecy and vision, to being transported in the spirit and invisibilty cloaks, this book takes a look at a sort of Christianity few truly believe in. A sort of Christianity that I remember longing for once upon a time with childlike faith. For the sake of the story, it also examines the possibility of going into the souls of others to fight for their freedom. While the author admits that this is probably not precisely true, it does seem to be in many ways a very accurate portrayal of a spiritual reality.
I can't finish this review without mentioning that James Rubart also ranks among my favorite people that I've ever met. It would be hard to imagine anyone else writing this amazing book. He is one of the truest believers and most inspiring people I've ever had the pleasure of spending time with. Everything about him radiates the love of Christ. And may I add, I'm so excited that he has now quit his day job to write for us all full time :)
I sincerely hope and pray this book will be a huge hit and a best-seller! Soul's Gate is the first in a series, and I'll be sure pre-order the sequels just as soon as possible.

I have always had a bit of an addiction to books, all books, including christian, and this will take you on a ride you won't forget. Even after you put this book down it leaves you thinking and you want more! In this book the journey of the main characters shows you the extent God will go to save a soul. It leaves you to think about life, and the choices we face and the actions we take. I love Christian Fantasy and this is some of the best I have ever read! I love this book!

Jim is an author who comes up with mind-twisting plots and what-ifs. Soul's Gate was no exception. The characters were interesting, but what grabbed me and is staying with me after closing the book is the idea that I want God to use me in a way like He did the characters. Imagine four people who fulfill an old prophecy. They are to come together to bring freedom to those who are in bondage. They have to start with themselves...and that means jumping in to other people's souls -- with permission -- to do warfare for them. Jim admits in an author note, that may not be possible. But so many other things in the book come straight from the Bible. Bottom line, I closed the book with a cry in my heart and hunger to be used by God in fresh, new, mighty ways to bring His freedom to this world. Definitely a book that can impact readers as much as Frank Peretti's This Present Darkness.
"There will come a day when you will train them - they will be four. The song, the teacher, the leader, the temple. Keep your eyes open to see, your ears open to listen, your heart open to feel, and your mind open to discern.
When the time comes, the Spirit will reveal each of them to you. You will teach them the wonders of my power they can't yet imagine. And instruct these warriors how to go far inside the soul and marrow.
They will rise up and fight for the hearts of others. They will demolish strongholds in the heavens and grind their enemies to dust. Their victories will spread across the nations. You will pour out your life for them and lead them to freedom, and they will turn and bring healing to the broken and set the hearts of others free.
And when the wolf rises, the four must war against him and bring about his destruction, only they have hope of victory. And for one, their vision will grow clear, and for one, the darkness of choice will rain on them, and for one, the other world will become more real than this one, and for one, death will come before the appointed time.
He folded the paper and put it back in his pocket. Five days from now Reece would explain to Brandon, Dana, Marcus and Tamera that they were the four. And pray like mad they believed him." (Pg 6-7)
In the latest suspense thriller from James Rubart, Soul's Gate is the first in the Well Spring Novel series, geared for those fans that love a good thrill ride. Coupled with facts from the Gospels of the Bible, along with the Book of Acts, Soul's Gate takes the readers into a dimension that thinly veils the one we know exists, the one in-between the spiritual realm to battle for the souls of the lost. The four chosen ones will be endowed with supernatural divine powers that will enable them to do things no one believes is possible but along the way risks greater than any will ever face become something each of them must chose to accept. As Reece Roth prepares to meet each of these four in a remote location known as Wells Spring, he has only four days to train them in their prophetic mission if they are willing to believe.
I received, Soul's Gate from James Rubart, compliments of Litfuse Publicity and Thomas Nelson Publishers for my honest review. I've read every single book by James Rubart and think he is a talented author for those that love a little something out of the ordinary in regards to suspense thrillers for Christians. He rates right up there with the greats, Frank Peretti and Ted Dekker and if you love books on spiritual warfare with a biblical twist I haven't read anywhere, you definitely want to pick this one up. This book will change your outlook on intercessory prayer and just how powerful prayer really is. The second book in this series, Memory's Door is slated for release in 2013. I rate this one a 5 out of 5 stars.
Jim Rubart's novels simply get better and better. This is top notch and I'd encourage every Christian to read it.
From the first page Jim's writing took me on a spiritual journey that had me pressing into the Lord as I explored the ideas in the novel in my own prayer life. Jesus brings freedom, it's a fundamental aspect of the gospel and Soul's Gate explores this truth by introducing four characters who are still struggling with their own particular issues. They are called to firstly tackle their own captivity before being able to help others to do the same which I take will be the main thrust behind the second in the series, Memory's Door.
However, the enemy doesn't just sit back and allow us as individuals to surrender our brokenness to the Lord. Rubart demonstrates this by using the allegory of people entering another's soul to help that person to both recognise their struggles and then helping free them. However, frequently the enemy will turn up in an attempt to thwart the crusaders efforts. In essence, I see this as how the Holy SPirit works in our lives. He enables us to identify the roadblocks to our freedom and provides us with the ammunition to blast them away. And once again, Satan and his cronies fight hard to stop the roadblocks from budging.
We can all help others in their individual battles by way of prayer which again is a big theme that runs through Soul's Gate. Prayer is powerful and it does work to prevent the enemy in its efforts.
I enjoyed each of the four characters, all very different and believable. I look forward to their development in the next edition. The scenery both physically and supernaturally is fantastic making the novel a great joy to read. Rubart does a magnificent job visually taking the reader into each of the scenes.
I'll be recommending this to everyone. It's a must read and the best novel I've read in 2013.
Congratulations Jim on a novel that I hope will stand the test of time not unlike some of those of a certain hero of yours, Mr CS Lewis.
Technically, Soul's Gate isn't considered a YA book. However, there's absolutely nothing adult in it, except the characters, so it's perfectly safe (and I even recommend it) for teens to read. It was a very very powerful book, that shattered me from the inside out and built me back again. It was INCREDIBLE!
In fact, let me share something with you - there were moments when my skin was crawling with goosebumps while I read. The power of the Spirit was so strong, it was dripping from each and every page. And when I finished the book, it felt like it had been I who'd gone on the journey inside a person's soul. I can't describe the feeling, but it was absolutely amazing! I'm sure going to reread it!
So, even though the author says the book was most of all about freedom, to me it felt like it was about trusting in the Lord beyond any reason. Trusting that He's always with us, always helping, always keeping us standing, no matter how difficult our situation is. True, freedom was among the main concepts, and I really did feel free after reading it.
Also, the entire novel spoke of how regrets, mistakes, hurt, people's words affect us as people; how even if we want to, the enemy never lets us forget that we'd sinned, that we still sin. But we must remember this: HE HAS FORGIVEN US. And that is enough. Amen.
If you want to delve into something so deep with the Spirit that you wouldn't want to get out of it, but jump even deeper, Soul's Gate is the book for you. It will bring you such a rush, you would never want to go back to real life.
WOW! What a ride this book was! I cannot stop talking about it! Soul's Gate centers around four individuals who are called together for a greater purpose. Reese Roth teaches the other three to embrace the true power of the Holy Spirit. They open their eyes to the realities of the spiritual realm in many way, and they begin to use His power to intercede for each other, replace lies, tear down strongholds, fight the enemy, and find freedom. The imagery of bondage and freedom in this book led me to tears multiple times.
The plot is fast-paced and unique with relationships, spiritual warfare, action, and suspense. The characters come to life on the page, especially as you glimpse into their souls. The author's notes at the end of the book discuss the reality versus fiction of the story. Most importantly, the theme and impact are powerful. True freedom is beautiful! That freedom is only found through Jesus and his Holy Spirit in us. The Holy Spirit is alive and powerful. He can erase the lies that we tell ourselves, and He replaces those lies with Truth...the truth that sets us free. Once we are free we can do all that He has planned for us.
I have to say again, "WOW!" This book inspired me to want to know Him more and to serve Him in a powerful way. He wants to use us and bless us in amazing ways, and I want to be used by Him. I highly recommend this book, and I am so thrilled that I received a free e-copy in exchange for my honest review.
I really enjoyed this story as it blended references to Scripture while presenting a form of spiritual warfare that enters into the fantastical realm. Even in the author’s notes at the end, he discusses that the idea of going into another person’s soul to battle is a pure act of fiction. There were several things that struck me in this book that can cause the reader to pause and consider. Primary for consideration is what lies we hold onto and let take root in our spirit which then inhibit our ability to have a deep and full relationship with God and with others. Instead, hearing God speak the truth, whether in the silence or through another person, brings healing. One of my favorite parts of the novel is when Brandon, Dana and Reece enter Marcus’ soul. Physically ‘killing’ the tendrils of lies binding Marcus has no lasting effect. However, rewriting the negative thoughts placed by a demon into positive ones like “My true and lasting affirmation comes only from my King.” is where the change can begin. I will be curious to see how this new series plays out in the future. For now, I’ll continue to ponder some of the themes that jumped out at me.
What if you could travel into someone’s soul? Thirty years ago, that happened to Reese, with deadly consequences.
Now he trains three others.
My thoughts: Wow! James Rubart has done it again--taken the reader to the far ends of the spiritual realm. I felt like I was reading a Frank Peretti book.
Although this is a work of fiction, many of the practices could be true. Going into a person’s soul, probably not, but then who knows.
The characters were likeable and relatable.
This book stretched my spiritual understanding and brought me closer to my Creator.
If you think Christianity is boring, you’ll think differently after reading Soul's Gate @ James Rupart.
I love Goodreads! I love the fact that I can log on and research a book, read comments by others, and find new reading material! That is how this book came to me. A wonderful story that I will walk away from with a better understanding of the Bible, something that is always a plus in my life.
I enjoyed getting to know Reece, Dana, Brandon and Marcus. Through each ones story I was able to connect in some way.
Great book! Fictional, but with alot of insight into emotional struggles we all face and how the victory over them can only be won through spiritual warfare and taking our thoughts captive to the obedience of Christ. He can set us free from anything that binds us, and we can help others by lifting them in prayer. I really enjoyed reading this one!
I don't often read fiction, but when I do, I want one that stirs me. This book did just that. It makes me hungry for more of God, to see him more and to be more aware of the things of the Spirit. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting their eyes opened some more and their Christianity to come more alive.
This novel was so good, yes, it’s fiction but this book seriously wowed me and also challenged me! I know the things I read in Soul’s Gate will linger in my mind for a long time to come. James Rubart is a brilliant writer and is quickly earning a top place on my favourite author list!
James L. Rubart in his new book, “Soul’s Gate” Book One in the Well Spring series published by Thomas Nelson takes us into the life of Reece Roth.
From the back cover: “Every now and then we get a break from reality. A glimpse into the other world that is more real than the reality we live in 99 percent of our days. The Bible is about a world of demons and angels and great evil and even greater glory.”
What if you could travel inside another person’s soul? To battle for them. To be part of Jesus healing their deepest wounds. To help set them free to step boldly into their divinely designed future.

They gather at a secluded and mysterious ranch deep in the mountains of Colorado, where they will learn to see the spiritual world around them with stunning clarity—and how to step into the supernatural.
Their training is only the beginning. The four have a destiny to pursue a freedom even Reece doesn’t fully fathom. But they have an enemy hell-bent on destroying them and he’ll stop at nothing to keep them from their quest for true freedom and the coming battle of souls.
This means war! The battle is on! The battle for souls is the hardest and most vicious ever imagined and James L. Rubert has given us a story that shows just how hard and vicious it is. Mr. Rubert gives us the warriors, those that fight for men’s souls. They are aided by the angelic host. Opposed to them, of course, are the demonic host. The reason why they are after the warriors is that if you take out those that do the fighting then the ones they are fighting for are lost and the demons win. “Soul’s Gate” is a very exciting book. One that will keep you flipping pages trying to find out what will happen next just as fast as you can read and flip. Everything is Biblical and Mr. Rubart is at the top of his game with his writing. “Soul’s Gate” will keep you asking questions, once you get the answer to one question it leads you to another and then another. This is an adrenaline laced adventure story. ”Soul’s Gate” is all about healing and freedom. The characters are extraordinary and well written and when you reach the ending you will let out a small cry of anguish contented sigh as we all have to wait until August of 2013 to find out what happens next. This is a just plain fun, exciting story that entertains as well as makes us think. Mr.Rubart has batted in a winner and I recommend this book highly. I am so looking forward to book two in this series.

At first I was a bit put off by the idea of entering others souls to fight spiritual warfare. It turns out to be at least a good literary model of our spiritual warfare through prayer for one another. Sometimes one needs to just relax and enjoy the story with a less critical prejudice. The story is truly one of spiritual warfare and being set free from the sin, regrets, mistakes and myriads of other things that keep,us from pressing deeper into Christ, and hopefully beginning to learn more of His reckless love for us.
Yes! I know you didn't think it was possible to write genuine, authentic, obvious Christian fiction that did not come with a full-on smorgasbord of 44 different kinds of cheese, but it is. Yes, it is possible. Here is it.
Soul's Gate is the story of Reece Roth-- a large, soulful man with a haunted past. And the group he assembles-- the physics professor, professional musician, and head-for-numbers career woman. He believes them to be part of a decades old prophecy and anointed by God to be their teacher. A veteran of serious spiritual warfare, he wars against himself and his past as much or more than he does other powers and principalities. And I know you thinking right now-- sounds pretty darn cheesy. Cliche, even. Take that feeling-- that history you have with cheez-whiz level Christian fiction-- and just leave it. Because this is great!
Rubart writes better Christian fiction, I think, by writing real people. Yes, they're Christian. Yes, the plot is Kingdom work and the work is full of all the terms, underpinnings, minutia, and detritus that goes with that. But it's real and genuine. None of the characters are holy and blameless. They doubt, sin, bicker, fight, cry, and complain. There's no swearing, per se, but there were a couple points where Dana (career woman) should have hit Brandon (musician) and didn't and I assumed it was because an editor or publisher made that happen, not because Rubart just couldn't bring himself to write genuine humans. The plot fulcrum of doing spiritual warfare inside the soul of another person is a big sell and tough swallow, but Rubart makes it work and adds a well-thought out authors note at the end to wrap things up.
Loved the story for the characters, plot, tension, climax and whoa buddy, that denouement. In fact, I was tickled when the library app I was listening to it on prompted me to check out and download the next in the series while I still had 30 minutes to go. And yes, I did listen to it. Four stars for the book and one star for Jesus. Rubart's narration is decent enough, but do you really have to give the physics professor a comically cliche nasal voice and why-use-two-words-when-16-would-be-better tone? Boo.
But still! Great stuff! Really happy to have found it and glad to be continuing the series!
Title: SOUL’S GATE Author: James Rubart Publisher: Thomas Nelson November 2012 ISBN 978-1-4016-8605-5 Genre: Christian\General
In SOUL’S GATE, James L. Rubart takes a new look at the nature of spiritual warfare. He looks at Ephesians 6:12, and various incidents that happened in Scripture, and he arrives at some very unique conclusions. Conclusions such as, “There really is a battle going on, that only those with Spiritual sight can see.” And you really can’t defeat an enemy that you cannot see. The leader of the group, Reese Roth, declares “Every now and then we get a break from reality. A glimpse into the other world that is more real than the reality we live in 99 percent of our days . . . A world that is all around us in every moment if we would have eyes to see and ears to hear.” And that is the mission that Reese Roth has been given. To train people to engage in spiritual warfare . . . inside the soul.
Brandon is The Song that is out of tune. Dana is The Leader who refuses to lead. Marcus is The Teacher so consumed with regret that he’s lost his teaching plan. Reese must take them, break them, heal them, restore them, and prepare them for a task that many of us either consider pure fantasy, or are attracted to in an unhealthy manner. And he has four days to do it.
Throughout the training, and following their graduation, the spiritual warriors find out more about one another, and themselves, than they had ever known. You will find yourself joining them in prayer, and in battle, as this book opens your eyes to the very real spiritual battles that take place all around us, every day. The question is . . . will you join the battle, or become a deserter?
This is Book One of the series, and I’m seriously looking forward to the next installment!
Thirty years ago, Reece Roth was given a prophecy: “there will come a day when you will train them—they will be four. The song, the teacher, the leader, the temple.” That day has now come, and Reece, along with Marcus Amber, Dana Raine, Brandon Scott, and Tamera Miller, are scheduled to go on a retreat together. Before they leave, Reece instructs the four to read the gospels and the book of Acts, and watch a movie - The Matrix.
Once on their retreat, Reese shares with the others some of the things he has learnt on his Christian walk. This is heavy, serious, spiritual stuff that threatens to break the four out of their everyday Christianity as they work together to get to know each other and break down spiritual barriers.
Jim Rubart is the award-winning author of Rooms, Book of Days and The Chair, and from reading Soul’s Gate, I can see why. Soul’s Gate is a story of freedom in Christ, with a strong emphasis on the spiritual battles that sometimes must be fought for that freedom. While Soul's Gate finishes the story, the ending makes it equally clear that this is only the start of the journey for the four warriors, just as this is the first book in what I hope is planned to be a series.
This is not comfortable Christian fiction. The reader of Amish romance who occasionally branches out into a Western romance or a Love Inspired title is not going to enjoy Soul's Gate. But the reader who wants something a bit more challenging and who can deal with a bit of the "woo-woo demons and angels" stuff while find this book worth reading, if only to debate which aspects are fiction and which just might be true. Recommended.
