The Great Seal Limitless Space & Joy The Mahamudra View of Diamond Way Buddhism Lama Ole Nydahl's refreshing and modern commentary to this classic Buddhist text about the nature of mind makes these teachings accessible to many people. THE GREAT SEAL describes our basis for development, the path, and the goal of Diamond Way Buddhism and offers insight into both the conditioned world and absolute reality. THE GREAT SEAL, or Mahamudra view, is compared to painting on water. Everything fits perfectly in the moment, yet while it appears it is also dissolving. Enlightened actions work in the same way: here and now, beyond expectations or fears, without holding on or pushing away.
Ole Nydahl, also known as Lama Ole, is a lama providing Mahamudra teachings in the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. Since the early 1970s, Nydahl has toured the world giving lectures and meditation courses. With his wife, Hannah Nydahl (1946-2007), he founded Diamond Way Buddhism, a worldwide Karma Kagyu Buddhist organization with over 600 centers for lay practitioners.
Nydahl is the author of more than twenty books (in German and English) about Diamond Way Vajrayana Buddhism, with translations into multiple languages. Titles include The Great Seal: Mahamudra View of Diamond Way Buddhism,The Way Things Are, Entering the Diamond Way, Buddha and Love and Fearless Death.
Wow, this was surprisingly good, actually amazing. The writing is so unconventional, so authentic, so fresh. A bit chaotic, but that's another authentic reflection of the way things are. I felt so much lightness and freedom reading this book. Maybe it wasn't a perfect introduction to Tibetan Buddhism though.. I shall learn about it more and then I will enjoy this wonderful book again.
The "3rd Karmapa's prayer about the Mahamudra" a rather unique text from the mind of a 14th century monk. Unfortunately the "explanation" from Ole Nydahl transforms it into a heavy hard-to-digest religious book, that constantly repeats itself over and over, seemingly trying to drill its way into your head as you read. Most of the chapters are dull and repetitive, it feels as if you're reading the same things on every page. The prayer itself is pretty interesting and inspiring, and some of Nydahl's explanations have merit to them, but those are the only positive things I can say about the book.
