This was one of the most influential books I read while building my first garden. Looking back on it now, Ken was on point at the perfect time - capturing a new era of horticulturists, many of which changed how America gardens. I frequently pull out this book from time to time to revisit how things have changed, and how incredibly Ken identified many of the most influential horticulturists who contributed to American gardenings today. This continues to be a must-have book for any gardener. Of course, this book is loaded with Ken's incredible photographs and knowledge.

I re-read this book a little late in the gardening season as most gardens are soon going to bed. A really well thought out book about those special plants (woodland, etc.) that you can add to your garden to truly make it unique. I would buy this book if I were less further along in gardening. It definitely should be a permanent part of a garden book collection.

Superb book packed with color photos.
I read the library copy but worth buying.
Interesting to note that one of the recommended nurseries is in Clare, Michigan.
