I grew up near Springfield and New Salem, so I was anxious to read this particular book. Like the rest of the series, it hits interesting highlights of the president. There's always something in these books that I find particularly enlightening. In ABRAHAM LINCOLN: 16th President it was learning that Mr. Lincoln's son Robert not only lost his father to an assassin's bullet but had been nearby when Garfield and McKinley were killed as well. After that, he got out of politics and concentrated on business at which he was quite successful.

Text is divided into 6 chapters that divide Lincoln's life into childhood, law career, presidential aspirations, Civil War and his death. Reproductions of important documents, photographs, maps and other visual aids are scattered throughout the text. Additional reference aids include: presidential fast facts, list of life details such as birth, family, major actions and firsts; first lady fast facts includes family, children, education and more; timeline of events includes photographs and short details; glossary; suggestions for further reading, including 'advanced' reading selections; places to visit; Internet resources; table of presidents lists all presidents (photo, and basic facts) through Ronald Reagan; Index; brief author biography; and photo credits. Recommended for grades 4 and up.

I really liked this book about Lincoln. There are several books to choose from about Lincoln but this was a little more in depth but not too much information for elementary students. This book is still for older students 4, 5 & 6 grades. The book has a glossary and timeline in the back, along with a table of presidents, online sites and places to visit. It also lists several books for further reading. This would be a very good book to use when studying Abraham Lincoln.

The Encyclopedia of Presidents series offers a small detailed chapter describing each key event in the presidents lives both in and out of politics. These books are best suited for junior high and high school level readers.
