A great book to start when just starting out to learn how to draw. Easy to follow and one that will make you feel accomplished in very little time to learn a new skill in creativity. Highly recommend!!
I have no clue on what this book is suppose to be. It says chilling creations but then includes drawing normal animals, body parts, and even banners for your name. Then among these normal drawing tips are just random, idiotic things like fish with heels, a cat crab, and hands with eyes. After the normal and weird stuff is few creepy things like an evil clown, a demon girl, and of course skulls. I'm not sure why the editors agreed with the author that this was a book on chilling creations with so few chilling creations actually being added. The whole front half of the book is not for beginners unless you count learning to draw pretty banners, blood drips, and fire. The drawing for the rest in the front half is very complex with the fine details, shading, and tones. There is a section the back for beginners with drawing prompts to help. After the almost realistic and detailed art in the beginning you would probably think the beginners section would be full of cool things. Nope. You get to learn how to draw vegetables, adorable eyes, and a cat face. The most difficult one for a beginner would probably be the the violin due to to the details. As for the others the author shows you things you can add to your drawings such as superhero veggies and supposedly evil cups of coffee. This book is a mess and one I wouldn't recommend especially for beginners.
I won this book through the goodreads giveaway!!! Yay! I don't usually like this type of drawing books. It's too structured for advanced artists and not structured enough for beginning artists.
However, I really liked this book. I see myself using this book to draw when I don't know what to draw. Usually, when blocked, I draw what's around me. Nine times out of ten, what is around me is boring and not inspirational... making me more blocked. The drawings in this book range from eerily beautiful to silly to downright creepy. I can see this book inspiring artists of all levels to fill up their sketchbooks.
While I can’t draw a stick figure, this was still a fun book to thumb through. It has a variety of unexpected things to draw, some creepy, and some not, with instructions leading up to the various finished pictures.
If you have a talented artist in your group, this would be a fun book to add to their collection. The unusual pictures are sure to keep them busy as well as spark some new and different thinking.
Concerns: Don’t purchase it thinking it is for a young beginner. Some previous signs of talent need to be detected. It’s not a book for "some" stick-figure artists.
Final Thoughts The book itself is large and of nice quality. If you’re looking for something a little outside the norm with lots of unusual pictures, this is a good choice.
My thanks to TLC Book Tours and the author for a gifted copy.
An excellent guide for artists - from teens to adults. This contains a variety of fun projects and things to draw, both unique and chilling!
In each project, the process is explained throughly and it gives the artist a chance to practice core techniques including shading.
One thing that was quite cool, is that the author shows a couple prompts and then how some of the students interpreted those. It was interesting to see how many different designs came from a single prompt based on the individuals creativity.
I really enjoyed practicing the techniques and putting my own spin on the concepts.
Thank you to the author and TLC tours for having me on the book tour for this great book.
Advice on how to draw some odd, maybe creepy-ish creations...using 6-8 step-by-step instructions. Some pointers re the use of different pencils, 'stumps', & erasers are included too. I think this book would be helpful for all ranges of artists, from beginners to more elaborate experienced. Appropriately titled! I received a free copy of the book from Library Tales Publishing, won as a Goodreads First Read Giveaway, for review purposes. This is my own fair/honest review.
I like these books to start stories for students that have a hard time with starting stories. Because of this particular use, I do not recommend this book because some of these images could be disturbing for children/young adults. If you are using this book for your own artistic endevors, this is a fun book to use and try!
(I received this book April 23, 2023 in a goodreads giveaway.)
I received this book as part of a book tour and immediately my daughters argued over who got to keep it once I was done. This guide book is awesome for beginning to advanced drawers who want to know how to draw a wide range of things. My daughters have "shared custody" of the book and love it. They're teenagers if that helps guide for age range.
Yes, I won this print copy in a Goodreads giveaway but upon receipt I had to open it immediately and give it a look, then a try. I love it and I am no skilled artist. There are helpful tips here for all skill levels and the images are amusing, fun and challenging to try. I really enjoy this book.
The high quality and size of this book surprised me. My children found the ideas inspiring, creepy and altogether fun. An enjoyable addition to their art collection that sparks their creativity to be more outside the box.
** I received a free copy for review. All options are my own.
I won this book in a giveaway and gave it to my husband first, to give him something to do while stuck in bed for a few days recovering from surgery. He liked it so much that he kept at it even after he was mobile again, lol. His drawings from the book are impressive!
Another great book by Catherine Holmes. There are some absolutely fabulous ideas to get your artistic juices flowing. However, I would say that this particular book is for a more advanced artist, not for a beginner.
I received a free copy, which I gave away to an artist teacher. It seemed the emphasis was loaded toward 'shading'. I'm sure it's important, but not to me.
I have won a copy from Goodreads Giveaways and the author. I am absolutely excited to receive, read (try my hand at drawing) and give an honest review. Thank you so much. Cheers
This is one of the most imaginative drawing books I have seen. After running through the pages I wanted to collect my gear and start drawing. But I have so many things going on that drawing always seems to take a back seat. Still, I came away thinking, "I can do this one." Drawing books don't always get me charged up like this one did. Most of the projects are only half-monsters, and the non-monstrous details will probably turn out to be the most useful in the long run. Now all I have to do is squeeze drawing between my reading, writing, and guitar-making. We'll see how it goes.

Do you like to draw? What’s your favorite type of art or other creative outlet?
I like to draw but I’m usually frustrated with my results! “nailed it!” haha
