WHERE THE BOYS ARE!

Hana Suzuki loves only two things in eating and sleeping. So when handsome classmate Izumi Oda asks Hana–his major crush–to join the school hockey club, persuading her proves to be a difficult task. True, the Grand Hockey Club is full of boys–and all the boys are super-cute–but given a choice, Hana prefers a sizzling steak to a hot date. Then Izumi mentions the field trips to fancy resorts. Now Hana can’t wait for the first away game, with its promise of delicious food and luxurious linens. Of course there’s also the getting up early, working hard, and playing well with others. How will Hana survive?

This is very, very weird. And it's not even the boy's field hockey club that forces a girl to join and be their goalie. Or that the girl sleeps all the time and has superhuman powers while asleep. Or that the club doesn't actually play hockey and just travels around to fancy places. It's the fact that a bear falls in love with the heroine and then plays some field hockey. I...what?

So I didn't immediately swoop this off the shelves.

"Hockey manga? Unnhhh...," I thought. And, "how could a hockey club be 'heavenly'?"

The cover sported (haha) five bishounen (pretty boys). Well, that IS rather heavenly. And translated manga titles aren't known for their accuracy. (Boys Over Flowers, anyone?)

But my hesitation was all for naught. True, there are hockey --known as lacrosse in the U.S.--scenes, but in the practice casually and play randomly sense.

The main character is a girl who overcame a prestigious high school's entrance exam because it would take approximately three minutes to run down the street and past the building's gate, thereby preserving maximum sleepage. When deprived of sleep, meaning less than nine hours, she becomes a zombified athletic freak, able to sprint with great speed and perform feats of strength.

Ah. The power of sleepless rage.

She is essentially blackmailed into joining the school's hockey club. The dynamics between her and the five rich boy members are respectively unique, hilarious, and give the pace wings.

Building on the comedy, the club doesn't exactly live up to its namesake. They enjoy hockey, but often use games as excuses to travel extensively, visiting spas, frequenting the local restaurants, only to have the game fall through due to tardiness, or in one instance, having blown off the opposing team's coach's toupee via their landing helicopter.

The hilarity is endless and the characters are each entertaining in their fashion. Looking to laugh your head off? Indulge in some difficult, comedic, and near mutually oblivious romance? Check it out.

1st read: 2.5*
um.
what?
what did i just read.
it was funny but also too ridiculous? and i would've enjoyed a lot more if we'd actually seen hana form bonds with the characters rather than all th training happen off page. and did izumi always have a crush on her or did he develop one? what?
i wish I'd loved this.
2nd read: 2.75*
why did i re read this?
i enjoyed it marginally more than my first read, because i now knew to expect absolute insanity, but i still think that it's too insane. all the characters except izumi are too one dimensional for me to care. i dont even think you know the twins' first names. and what's with all the animal abuse? i wish I'd loved this more.

A little weirder than I remember, but cute. Still similar to Ouran, but slightly less than I thought it was.

I thought this was pretty funny, even though it gets ridiculous later on. I mean, there's a bear that gets involved. That's just silly.

But I laughed, and overall I liked it.

This manga was just not for me. The humor was not my cup of tea so I will not be continuing on in the series.

Sedangkan Hana? Tipikal shoujo manga, yg cewek biasanya agak telmi soal bginian, nyadarnya baru nanti2. Bagus untuk baca santai dan ketawa2. Mari lanjut.

I was a tad skeptical about this one, but I was pleasantly surprised. For anybody who enjoyed Ouran High School Host Club, this manga will be very entertaining. Just by looking at the cover, you can see the parallels. Main girl, The Twins (likely for comedic relief), The Guy With Glasses (runs the show, often brooding), The Cute One (will be main potential love interest for main girl), and The Number Two (also cute, but not as popular as the Main Guy, competition for main girl). Each one is in Ouran, each one is in Hockey Club.
Here's the difference: These guys may be rich, but they are not the snobs from Ouran. They actually want a normal club life, but their expectations get in the way. I thought it was quite amusing that they truly wanted to play field hockey and it wasn't just a gimmick to travel. They do love the traveling though, and that's what ropes Hana into joining. Hana may be "the Haruhi" of this story, but she is not a thing like her. Hana is blunt, Hana is selfish, and she actually has a sense of humor. I really enjoyed Hana and her laziness, but she honestly tries when she realizes this stupid hockey club means something to these boys. That, and she gets to travel to fun places for free, stay at onsens and eat expensive and delicious food.
I laughed out loud, and that doesn't happen often. It won't make sense until you read it, but: monkey in the bathtub. I had to put the book down for a moment before I could continue, I was laughing so hard.
I look forward to seeing how the characters develop, and when (if ever) the "romance" comes in. Even if it's just Hana's face, because she won't understand it. Ultimately, a fun twist from Ouran, without being an exact replica. You know shenanigans will ensue.

My Heavenly Hockey Club: Volume 1 made me laugh. Not only did I like the book, I loved it. All of the characters are great and the stories are fun.

I must admit, I did groan a bit when I saw the bear in the goalie pads. I thought that was kind of stupid. This book is so good that it doesn't need dumb things like that.

I really like the playful interaction between Izumi and Hana. What I also enjoy is the fact that there isn't any lusting after or thoughts of sex between the main characters. First of all, this book is rated ages 13 and above, so it shouldn't be here, and it isn't. So many manga books revolve around sex, I am glad it isn't in this series.

The stories are entertaining and move along at a great pace. The artwork by Ai Morinaga is wonderful. What I really like about the manga is that it doesn't have a lot of the goofy faces these books often have. I have never really liked it when the artist does that.

The Translation and Adaptation of the Japanese to English by Athena & Alethea Nibley is terrific. I found no problems with it at all. This always makes me happy because I can then thoroughly enjoy the story without being distracted by bad English.

Overall, My Heavenly Hockey Club: Volume 1 is a great first book in a series that has a lot of potential. I cannot wait to see if the Grand Hockey Club will play their first game in My Heavenly Hockey Club: Volume 2. I bet the don't get to for some reason. In fact, I bet they never get to play. I am sure that something will interfere with that every time.

I rated this book an 8½ out of 10.

Also known as Gokuraku Seishun Hockey Club. I've read three out of fourteen volumes so far. There really isn't any plot in the story so it's a chapter by chapter type as I like to call them. The characters aren't that appealing either. I can't say I dislike them, but I just don't care about them. It was slightly humorous though despite that. Probably it's only redeeming quality. I highly suggest reading Ouran High School Host Club if you haven't already if you don't like this or perhaps especially if you do. It has a dynamic of one girl in a group of guys like this one but it's spectacularly better. If by chance my opinions change as I advance in the manga I'll make sure to update this.

I wanted this to be a hockey Hikaru no Go, with lots of hockey shenanigans and hockey problems to be solved. It is not. In fact, this is much more like a tamer Ouran Host Club, which is fine because reverse harem antics are always fun. This is a decent manga and I recommend it to people who like shojo.

If you are in search of a laugh out loud comedy, romance, or maybe you are just a big fan of the traditional manga artwork, then I strongly recommend that you read "My Heavenly Hockey Club." In this well written manga, high school student Hana's preferably lazy life is turned upside down when she is forced to join her prestigious school's Boys' Hockey Club, thereof replacing her one hobby; sleeping. Also know as the traveling club, the hockey club only goes to away meets(often vacationing, because of their notorious loosing streak, and the matches just-so-happening to be in the perfect spot for relaxation every time).

This probably isn't a title I would have picked up (thank you, Chapters, for your policy of allowing people to shamelessly read in the store--but I have a copy on its way!) if I'd only read the back cover copy, but I wanted to check it out on the grounds of it being the first manga volume that Alethea and Athena Nibley adapted as well as translated. ^_^ The story didn't jump up and grab me, but it was a fun read, and the adaptation is smooth while retaining the feel of a very faithful rendering.

What a surprise! I'll be honest-- I'm not huge into stories without a lot of romance. Give me a good dose of love triangles and I'm set. That's why I was very surprised when this story, filled with gags and very little of the love bug, had me laughing page after page.

For fans of sports manga-- I don't recommend this title. They rarely play field hockey. It is more like Host Club than a hard core sports manga.

Try it out, you might enjoy it!

Hahaha.

Bintang 5 deh! Nggak lain dan nggak bukan! Hidup tukang tahu!

I REALLY LOVED this manga! It is extremely similar to Ouran High School Host Club, but a tad different. I LOVED Hana's character, as well as Izumi's. Overall, the one thing that really stuck out to me was the comedy. It's SO FREAKING HILARIOUS I CAN'T EVEN. I seriously laughed out loud multiple times and my roommate looked at me like I was a crazy person, but it was SO WORTH IT!! And may I just say that one of the jokes involves a monkey... yes, a live monkey... THIS IS COMEDY GOLD, PEOPLE!!

Series Review: My Heavenly Hockey Club is an amusing and heart warming manga that I greatly enjoyed from start to finish. It has the usual cliche's but the likability of the characters easily makes up for it. For those wary of sports manga do not fear as the entire premise is the fact that they do not really play hockey that much and are more of a "travel" club. The ending was a bit sudden but over all very good. I recommend giving this manga a try.

Thoughts:
I wasn't prepared to like this as much as I did. It was much more fun than the at times depressing Yamada monogatari story about the super poor Yamada family with loads of kids. It does remind me a bit of Ouran High School Host Club though with the same sort of character roles. Hana Suzuki is just a bit more into sleeping.

Character design reminds me of Ouran (cute twin boys, rich leader who doesn't have a clue, bespectacled responsible guy, poor girl who needs to pay off something she wrecked) but the art and storyline is rougher. Ai Morinaga does comedy well--this got a few chuckles out of me, so I decided to go with 4 stars (rounding up from the 3.5 I'd give it) =D

my fault for picking this up based only on the title. the sharks are in the news, opening night was a few days ago, they'll win their division blahblahblah. anyway i'm thinking ice hockey and this is something called field hockey. basic story: a sleep deprived h.s. student gets stuck on the school boys field hockey team, she likes food she has small breasts and sleeps w/a bear.
