Good overview of campaigns fought west of the Mississippi River. Enjoyed the part on the New Mexico Campaign. But the material is dated, and a couple of the sections seem to show bias, reflecting a slight pro-Confederate slant in the writing.
This is an interesting book but it has the same problem as his longer book The Civil War in the American West: the chapters seem to be written as self-contained units by topic, rather than being written in chronological order.
This book is another of the Time-Life series, The Civil War. It has been in my home library since 1987. The text is a discussion of many battles I was previously unaware. I recommend it to those who study the Civil War.
