The spellbinding saga of the Danilov family, begun in This Dark Paradise, continues. In a dark corner of the deep South, where Alex Danilov's family lived and died, a ghostly force of irresistible evil possesses the souls of his ancestors. Now Alex must fight with all he has to save them.
This one wasn’t nearly as good as the first book. The plot itself was interesting but it felt dragged out and ended up becoming boring instead. I almost considered DNFing this one but was curious on how everything ended since this is the last book and thankfully it started picking up 60% in. The climax was pretty exciting and I liked the overall ending. This could have been a pretty good series had it been done well.
I liked the addition of the characters Francine and Rhudwyn. Kelli’s character wasn’t as fleshed out as I would have liked, though I liked her spunk. I felt awful for her parents, though. Lydia is one of the most evil female characters I’ve encountered in a while—she really outdoes herself in this book. The sex related death scene is probably one of the most creepiest I’ve read. Some of Alex’s old fashioned views also made me roll my eyes a few times.
There’s also this gem of a line that made me laugh: Sometimes he thought he ought to flap in the wind like a piece of old Swiss cheese, more holes than substance.
2.5 Stars
The climax redeems the 2 star rating this was hovering at and I’m feeling generous, so I’ll round up.
Alex Danilov is a great character, so I was inclined to love this as much as the previous book. Unfortunately, the plot in this one isn't as good, even on the weird side. If you read and liked "This Dark Paradise", it's worth it to read this one, too. Just be prepared for a bit of disappointment.
