Der Daily Star

Rate this book

The Belgian author Morris (full name Maurice de Bevere) is best known for his humorous cowboy character, Lucky Luke. Morris started his career in 1945 in Le Moustique, creating various covers and illustrations. By the end of the 1940s, Morris met his colleagues Jijé, Franquin and Will. These four artists would be called "The Gang of 4", because they all worked in Jijé's studio at that time. The first episode of Lucky Luke, 'Arizona 1880', was published in L'Almanach Spirou 1947, and was later continued in Spirou. In his early 'Lucky Luke' comics, Morris was greatly inspired by animated cartoons à la Disney.
In 1949, Jijé took Morris and Franquin to the US, where Morris met Jack Davis and Harvey Kurtzman, whom he helped with their plans for Mad Magazine. He also met René Goscinny in the US. In 1955, Morris returned to Europe and collaborated with René Goscinny on 'Lucky Luke'. Goscinny wrote the scenarios of over 35 stories, which led to the great success of the series.

Horace Greeley was already dead by the time Upton Sinclair was born, so to have them both appear at the same time - the former quite young, at that! - is simply unacceptable. Also, they weren't fifty years ahead with spoken news: they were several centuries behind, with town criers.

That said, this was actually pretty decent. It had a solid arc and good pacing, and plenty of gunslinging action to keep me interested. Good to see they can get a story going even without Goscinny sometimes.

English Cinebook Edition = 2013

Story: ****
The new school of writing is predictably excellent and in the style of original writing because Dargaud was obviously going to give the reigns to the best of the adoring generations that probably grew up with the title as a cherished favorite.

Art: ****
Even without Goscinny, the vintage feel and appeal remains with the enduring Morris brushing wild with his unique and authentic style.

This Lucky Luke volume is a story about the printing press in the wild west and what challenges it faced as a certain Horace Greely wants to succeed in Dead End City as an owner of a newspaper, the Daily Star. Telling the truth does not work for many people who live off leeching others, so he faces certain accidents and then finally competition. Lucky Luke is helping him to stay on track, there are some humorous elements, but I'm still to find one Lucky Luke volume that is an absolute hit. Lukewarm, not bad certainly, but not great either.

No, not the somewhat grotty British tabloid, but an Old West newspaper with a proprietor inspired by a real editor who went on to run America’s most influential newspaper.

The Horace P Greeley of this book, we’re reliably reassured, is not intended be the same man, but with the resilience, determination and innovation he shows you wouldn’t mind if he was. With his reliable Washington Imperial No 3 printing press Horace sets off out into the West to tell the truth wherever he rolls up, but that often lands him in deep trouble, so when he meets Lucky Luke and Jolly Jumper there’s the opportunity to put down firmer roots in a town and really make a go of the paper. The problem is that despite Luke’s help, and Jolly Jumper’s exceptional assistance on most of the related newspaper production chores, some members of the town don’t appreciate the spotlight that the paper throws on them and try again and again to shut it down.

There’s a nice recurring gag where the ideas man of the hapless group has to run through a little pantomime to lay out his plan, and the alternative’s that are used when the newspaper and then ink run out are worth a smirk too.

Fauche and Léturgie are on writing duties here following the untimely death a few years earlier of Goscinny, and they make a good stab at retaining the humour and storytelling style of what’s gone before, no doubt assisted by the fact that Morris is still drawing his creation and understands what makes Lucky Luke tick.

What I particularly enjoy about this series is how they can take a small detail of living in the West and expand upon it, shaping an interesting and amusing tale in the process. One of the things I’ve always loved about cartoons and comics is their ability to introduce the unusual and the overlooked, so you end up a little more informed on a subject which can sometimes be all it takes to launch a wider interest. And there’s certainly lots to discover about the early efforts of a newspaperman here - in-between the more outlandish fun - and the fact you get Lucky Luke as well is indeed a bonus.
