Harry August Heat Various Temptations Confession Gone Is Gone Time Fuse A Little Place Off The Edgware Road A Pleasure Shared The Old Man Spooner Trial For Murder Someone In The Lift Mrs. Manifold
In "The Old Man" by Holloway Horn, Martin "Knocker" Thompson lives by his wits and tongue in various dubious professions (fight tout, bookie, etc.), assiduously maintaining the appearance of a gentleman. Down on his luck, a mysterious old man appears on the dark street and sells him what he claims is tomorrow's newspaper. And it appears to be, as Martin bets heavily on the winners of the horse races listed. But he should have read the news section more carefully... well, an overly familiar yarn, but not unenjoyable for its realistic character.
"Time-Fuse" - Miss Ellen Moody runs a boarding house and has a tendency to credulously involve herself with the latest fads - in this case Spiritualism - and so, she conducts seances and seems, surprisingly to even herself, to possess powers of faith... This is a strangely cruel story, presumably about faith and how it can give abilities, but how easily it can be shaken. Strange.
