Drew Lawson is an African-American who lives in Harlem and adores playing basketball; he is the lead player of his high school basketball team. His dreams are to play in a Division 1 college and get drafted to the NBA. Although the bad influences around Harlem and in school made it difficult to succeed, he was determined to be one of the few that make it out. Things change though, when a new kid comes and tries to take over Drew’s team. Drew has to learn to deal with it and can not loose his cool because basketball is the only thing that can take him to college. When I was reading this book, it felt like I was there and this was actually happening around me. The author did a great job on the description of the characters and the surrounding that I could picture myself inside of the book. My favourite character in this amazing novel is Drew. I can relate to him in so many ways. He is just like me, a basketball player. We both know how hard it is to make it big in basketball and will do almost anything to get there. He is a regular kid growing up in Harlem with complications and everything you would expect a normal kid would have. The author described Drew’s feelings in this novel clearly and that made it feel like he was real. Everything he feels throughout this story is so believable and relatable. The things he experiences while playing and on and off the court is exactly what I feel. I absolutely love this book. The thing that I like most about this novel is how Drew progresses and changes during the season and the book overall. He used to be a ball player and that’s it, but now he is so much more. He is considered an actual team player now. The author’s writing style is easy to understand and his way of using words makes it so believable. This book would have to fall under realistic fiction. Walter Dean Myers has written over fifty books from non-fiction to picture books. His books can satisfy young readers, teens and as well as adults. From reading this book the message that Walter Dean Myers is trying to get across is that we should not let the influences and the peer pressures keep us from getting to where our goals are. Walter Dean Myers sent that message through Drew. Overall, this book is incredible and I would recommend it to everyone unless you are one who does not like sports. This book is especially for people who play basketball and understand the difficulties and hardships that come when you are faced with tough competition and have to carry the team on your back.
"If you know you don't have a win, then there's no use for you being in the game."
—Mr. Ferguson, "Game", P. 58
"Maybe being loved wasn't enough; maybe there was something else you needed not to get in trouble."
—Game, P. 84
Walter Dean Myers has an outstanding acumen for urban teenage language. The rhythm and pop of street talk flows with full flavor in this book, setting a perfect scene while at the same time moving the story in several unexpected directions at once. A book like this one could have all too easily fallen into cliche plot lines, but Walter Dean Myers clearly was willing to put some special effort into the crafting of this sport narrative, completely unwilling to let it degenerate into nothing but an action-packed sports book. On that note, however, I must say that the descriptions of basketball action engineered by Walter Dean Myers in the text were extraordinary. He really has an excellent feel for the game and the subtle visual ways that it unfolds out on the hardwood, and this deep understanding allowed the novel to read, at times, like the watching of a tight basketball game. All of this makes for a fantastic, riveting book, but what really impressed me about this sparkling novel is the profound sensitivity and insight that Walter Dean Myers fit so beautifully into the story. Here is an author who understands dreams, both broken and fulfilled, on such a full level that I was constantly amazed as I turned the pages by the sweetness of his gentle wisdom. "Game" affected me very deeply, and I could see it as making an important impact on the lives of readers of any kind, black or white or red or green, young or old, wise or simple, sincere or mocker. It's this versatility that makes "Game" a truly exceptional story, and I consider myself lucky to have read it. In my opinion, it is one of the finest young adult books of the year, or of recent times, and I would give it three and a half stars..
"No matter what...ball made my heart beat faster, made me want to jump up and down and be Superman. That's what life was about anyway, being Superman and living like life itself was important. Basketball made my life important."
—Drew Lawson, "Game", P. 114
"People told me to give up trying to be special and settle down to a regular life. There ain't nothing wrong with a regular life, and that's the Lord's truth...But it wasn't for me, because I wanted to be something special...I knew how easy it was for a dream to die. I seen that all around me. You could let it die by just looking the other way—you know, some of those Asian people say they don't kill nothing, but they'll take a fish out of water and lay it on the ground and then say it just died on its own—you can do that with a dream, too. And sometimes you can get so frustrated, you feel so bad about your dream, that you go on and kill it yourself. When you do that, you're killing a piece of yourself, too."
In the book "Game" by Walter Dean Myers, Drew lawson is a black senior in James Baldwin Academy. He has a goal to play college basketball although where he lives that is tough goal to achieve. Drew lives in a town where robbery and poverty is common. When the season starts Drew is told that halfway through the season colleges start to recruit players. When the team meets for practice halfway through the season two new white players show up. Drew realizes one of them named Tomas is good and coach does to. Drew's coach starts giving the new white players more playing time than Drew. When the players start to make mistakes that the coach doesn't realize Drew takes matters into his own hands but when he does he is pulled out. Drew then becomes more of a team player then a star player and lands a full scholarship to Depaul a division 1 College.
The moral of this book is not to be selfish. In the begging of this book Drew only cares about himself. Even though Drew is a great player there was no way he could carry the team on his shoulders and he finally realizes that. At the beginning of the book Drew shoots whenever he gets the chance, he didn't pass, and he only cared about himself. When coach starts cutting some of his game time out then he starts to care about the team and actually become a better player by being a team player. Overall this book was not that great because it didn't pull me in very much. This was not suspenseful at all and I could almost predict what would happen next. I would give this book a 6.5/10 for an overall grade.
ame was one of my favorite WDM novels. Walter is a vivid writer who exemplifies the street life and portrays it to the reader. He has a way of painting a picture of the way the urban life no matter what race, sex, nationality or social class you can relate to Walters novels. In Game we are introduced to a young talented player. He is a typical high schooler living with his mother, father and little sister, struggling with Othello and playing basketball. Now there's basketball then there's Drew Lawson Basketball. Drew is a different breed while he struggled in class he felt home and completly in control on the court. Then everything changed when a new player Thomas transfered to his school. Thomas was a new kid at the school driven from his old country with his dad in jail for going against the government. After that the country was hit by a tsunami wave that flooded his village. As soon as Thomas came he was the star. That was Drews spot all around he was the better player and everyone knew it, and how to best defend a driving guard Thomas had a different thing going for him. Thomas was a white kid playing on an all black team. Together Thomas and Drew played competing for glory scouts and girls. As they worked hard on the court and off the court Thomas and Drew formed a bond as team mates. Drew discovered that basketball isnt everything at the end of the novel when sky missed a clutch three to win the game. He realized that the world is a game and you have to play with heart to get somewhere and be sucessful.
Drew Lawson (Andrew Lawson), an African-American, loves basketball and I mean it when I say love. Drew is the star player in his high school basketball team, the Barrick Chargers. He hopes to get into one of the good schools that have a good basketball team and has always dreamed of playing in the NBA. He lives in Harlem, but he doesn't want to be like the people in Harlem who can play but has gone the wrong way. Then when a new white kid joins the basketball team, House(his coach) and Fletcher(the assistant coach) gives him all the attention and Drew feels threatened. But they're doing that because they're teaching the players to be team players instead giving the spotlight to a star player. It's the second half of the season and if they lose 2 games, Drew may not play for the NBA. Later on in the story, Drew learns to be a team player and gets into a good college. I think that this a really good book for people who play basketball, but also for people who might not like basketball at all. But the author should talk more about Drew when he's not playing basketball or when he's not at school. Drew is a dynamic character because he changes from the beginning of the book to the end. Drew is this star player who gets the spotlight, but later on, he changes and turns to a team player. I think Game is one of my favorite books I've ever read.

The main character in this book is Drew he plays basketball and is pretty good at it he grew up in a bad part of town where there were stabbings and gangs all over. Basketball helped him break through all of the gangs and everything which I thought was pretty cool because he had never known there was another way to live instead of partaking in gangs until he met basketball. Drew however though has a bad temper and keep himself under control, which is one of the things that made me mad during this book. Drews temper got the best of him one time at practice and this made House his coach sit him for a few games, which I understand but he shouldn't have sat 5 games because of what he did. Two new guys came onto the team and they were both white and this was odd because everyone on the team was black, they were supposedly good and without even partaking in one practice they started the next game, which made me pretty mad. Ruffy there center makes me pretty mad because he believes that he can do everything even though he really can't. Ruffy took the ball with a minute left in one of these games and missed the shot even though Drew was wide open, this made me pretty mad. Sky was the starting point guard for the team and I really like him because he was really good but he was very humble also. Sky in their final game of the season stole the ball with 5 seconds left and he passed it to Drew who hit the game winner which made seem to like Sky a lot more now. Even after Drew hit the shot, the next game House still hardly played him which made me really mad because he had been playing really good and the coach won't even play him. All in all this book wasn't that good of a book in my mind, I really don't know why because of the storyline of how Drew hardly played or that everyone in the book just seemed to not like Drew.
This book was a lot better than I thought it would be. It just inspires people that things get tough and not everything goes your way. That was the case with Drew, he was the star of his basketball team until the coach brought in a new offense. This offense makes another guy the star and Drew is not satisfied by not being the star. This book kind of inspires people to keep pursuing their goal and be the best they can be. Drew does everything he possibly can to become better and put him in a position to be the star he wanted to be. It isn't gonna be easy for him but with his attitude and drive a guy would think he will get what he wants.
I was pretty impressed from this book. It really is something that can happen in real life, or that it is based on a true story. If you are into sports and know how difficult it really is to be an athlete, then this book would be a good one for you. I would recommend this book to many even if they are not interested in sports because it is a good life lesson.
Drew is a 17 year old high school basketball player who has aspirations to go onto college and play college basketball. He always had loved basketball, but now it was more important than ever to him because he wants to go to college but will need a scholarship to be able to afford it. He had never done well in school, and sports was all he really had. Game is about Drew trying to handle being a teenager while trying to win a championship to get noticed for college. Drew was doing well until his coach messed it all up for him.
His coach then starts to favor a new white kid, and Drew starts to notice he is losing his playing time to this new kid, and he isn't about to let someone take away his hard work. Drew needs his playing time back because the championship is right around the corner.
I like the way this book was written. It was written in a way that you can tell it was written for teenage boys to read. The characters use dialogue in a realistic way, and use a lot of slang. I like this because it makes the book feel relatable.
The Game by Walter Dean Myers is a book about a kid named Drew. He is playing basketball. His coach is named House. He and his team are trying to win the championship in high school basketball. He is pretty much the best in his team. Early in the story two white kids join the team from another country. They also think they are good. They have to find a way to work together as a team if they want to win. I would rate this book as a good 9/10. This book was a very interesting book. I could never really put the book down. I was always wondering what was happening next. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes sports. You don’t have to play basketball to read this book, it is really for anyone. You should read this book for an easy, fun read.
This was a very good book. It was one of my favorite sports book iv read with some interesting parts in it. overall it was a good book i recommend people read.
The book talks about the life of this kid named Drew who likes to play basketball and dreams of getting into a good college with a basketball team who plays in division A. I recommend this book to people who like reading about sports.
The novel GAME by Walter Dean Myers, takes place in Chicago and is about a high school student named Drew. Drew is on his high school basketball team and is the best player on the team. About halfway through the season, the team's coach, House, brings in a new player from Prague, a place in the Czech Republic. The new kid, whose name is Tomas, isn’t that good of a player when he is brought in and everyone knows it. House tries to make Tomas the team’s new star player, but Drew wasn’t going to let that happen to him. Drew starts to get less playing time so that the coach can try and make Tomas the next team player but it isn’t working well. Drew usually only plays less than a full 12 minute quarter. Whenever Drew gets his time on the court, he shows why he is the team’s best, he plays at a level that some could match with even Michael Jordan at points. Drew and House eat lunch together and talk about what was happening with him and Tomas, and that Drew was slowly going to get his minutes back from Tomas, and it’s at the perfect time. It’s time for the championship game.
Two of the biggest characters in the book were the main character Drew and the new kid Tomas. When Tomas first showed up, he was just given everything and all of the things he was given were taken for Drew, his starting position, his minutes, and almost his jersey number (Drew was able to keep it just barely). Drew and Tomas get into a fight because Drew is enraged about how a random kid just comes out of nowhere and takes everything he has without having to work for it. Drew also talks to the team’s coach about it at lunch and Drew eventually gets his things back and his and Tomas become somewhat friends. The story reminds me of a now pro basketball player named Jahlil Okafor because his coach brought in three new players to try and see what it would be like without Jahlil in the lineup because it was his senior year there. In the story, the coach brings in two players and it is Drew’s senior year too. Both of them have minutes take away but only Drew has his starting spot taken. But both Jahlil and Drew seem to have very similar lives and they remind me of each other.
The author, Walter Dean Myers, doesn’t really use any literary devices that I found while reading. There may have been a slight piece of imagery during the championship game but that may have been it. I didn’t notice any other real devices in the novel.
The story GAME by Walter Dean Myers is a story that does require you to think but not too much. The story makes you wonder things like “Why is House being so soft towards Tomas when he’s bad at basketball?” Other than small questions like that you don’t have to think all that much when you’re reading the book. The vocabulary and writing made it an easy read.
I would recommend this book to other people. I had a really fun and enjoyable time when I was reading this book and when I got to the end I wanted to read it again and again. The story shows you how hard life is for some people and how you need to put in your best effort to get what you want in life. I would rate it a 5 out of 5 and would recommend that everyone reads it.

The title of the book is GAME, The author of the book is Walter Dean Myers. This book was publication in 2008. The genre is fiction, The award it won was New York times bestselling. There was 218 pages in this book. The main character is Drew and his supporters is Mom and hes Pops and his sister Jocelyn. The setting is in New York City.
The protagonist is the team hes playing for. Some choices the main character has to make is when he play with hes team that means. That he got to make good shots in a basketball game because if he don't make shots that means that his team not gonna win. In the story the major conflict is he got to go and get a scholarship for basketball. So he can go on to be a NBA player because that what he want to be. The antagonist is the team hes going against. Other characters in the story are people in his team he have a couple of players but not gonna name all of them but gonna name all the mains one. They are House he's the team coach and others are Ricky,Abdul, and Fletch
The theme in the book is about basketball. The message the author trying to communicate is that always try your best. Even when you look at the future and you think things not going great just keep going and don't stop. Than somewhere its going to be a opening and that's when things going to come back again. The characters help the author message by telling Drew that hes doing really good and don't stop playing basketball. Just because one day you will get where you want to be. One of the character in the story GAME he was going for a shot and there was like 5 sec on the clock and it was a tie game. But when Drew gave him the ball and he just stand there and didn't shout it so Drew got the ball and got the lap up. Than they won, But if I was the guy were just standing there I would just went for the shot or the lay up.
What I liked about the book is how it talks about someones life. That's how I love my books I like it where an author talks about hes or her life. It can be fake but that does not mean that it can't happened. Another thing I like about this book is how he's one of the best in the team in he's basketball team. Even how close he's game is and one mistake and than they can get a lost. What I don't about the book is how there was not that much auction only when he play basketball. So only the game where the action not outside of he's life. But besides that this was a really good book.
Don't get me wrong but this is a really good book. For people that watch sports or play sports. Should read this book, not only people that play basketball. Just because in the book there's time where Drew that he think that he gonna lose but he still try his best to win. Than when he win he's not happy for his self but he's happy for his team and he's family.

Game by Walter Dean Myers made me really feel like I was there in the book, even though I wasn’t it made me feel though I was. Drew Lawson was the star of his school basketball team. He knew he had game and so did everybody else. Although the bad influences around Harlem and in school made it difficult to succeed, he was determined to be one of the few that make it out. But then a new kid comes and tries’s to take Drew’s team. Drew can’t lose his cool because he knows that basketball is the only thing that’s going to keep him out of trouble and what’s going to get him to college. This book took place in Harlem, New York and Walter Dean Myers did a good job at the description. While I was reading a felt as though I could imagine myself there and as if it was real life. From our world and my real life experiences they’re about the same in the book as real life. In the book there is life like situations that happen there in Harlem that happen here in our world. I can really picture in my mind how everything would look like based from reading. Drew Lawson one of the most important and main character of the book, is actually like a regular kid growing up in Harlem. With hardships, success, school and everything you would expect a kid to have. Drew is my favorite character out of the book because he is just like me, plays basketball. I can relate to him much easier than the other characters because I know it’s not easy to make it big in basketball. Both me a Drew understand the bad influences around us but we got to not let them interfere in what our goals are. From reading this book the message that Walter Dean Myers is trying to get across is that we shouldn’t let the influences and the peer pressures keep us from getting to where our goals are. And Walter Dean Myers sent that message through Drew. Knowing Harlem was a place where crimes are often at. Walter Dean Myers knew that making the character Drew would help other kids in the same situation recognize that it is possible to make it out of tough neighborhoods like Drew did. I know it relates to me because a lot of bad influences are in and around my school, but seeing Drew’s situation I saw that it’s not impossible. Walter Dean Myers made the message a hundred percent clear. So my final thoughts about the book are that it is a good book and I do recommend it. I liked the book because it showed me that you can make it big in anything if you’re determined. Also when things happen that don’t go the way you planed don’t lose your cool.
I think the peron that changed the most from the beginning of the book to the end of the book was Drew. At the beginning of this book he was a self-centered, cocky ball player who thought of himself as the star of the team. Then when a new player Tomas came to the school Drew feels as though he needs to solidify his spot on the team in order to show him who the man is on the team. When the coach suddenly benches him he decides in order to play again he will have to change his mentality to someone who is a leader, a team player, but is still confident. At the end of this novel his school team would go on to lose to Franklin K. Lane high school in a hard fought battle. This would be a big eye opener for Drew. He knew that in order for him to play on he would have to accept new challenges, even if it meant he would have to compete for a spot on a college team. All around him his teammates got offers to Division I and II colleges. He though his basketball career was over. Just when he did a scout from the University of DePaul and a priest show up at his house. They wanted him to attend. The thing that caused Drew to change from the beginning was when Tomas came to the school. At the end of the book Drew realizes what true potential he has and in order for him to do something with it he would have to venture out and try new things. In the end Drew would go to college opening up a new chapter in his life.
Drew Larson is an African-American who loves basketball. He is the main player for his high school team, it's his last season before he goes to college and hopefully plays ball there. As the season goes on they have another player come and try to take his role in the team. He can not lose it because that's the only way he will make it to college. He has to keep his cool and cooperate with the adjustments his coaches are doing. Over all this book is very easy to relate to, it gives you a clear image of what it is saying. I felt as if I was watching this happen in front of me. The fact that his role was being taken over by someone else made me reflect upon my self. But the way he grew as the season went on made it even more in interesting because he understood that the coaches were doing what was best for the team. He continued to perfect his craft so he could catch any recruits eyes. I would recommend this book to athletes, it gives you a wide picture of how team play should be and how athletes should stay dedicated to the game even when odds are going against you. To keep working hard and perusing your dream and making it become reality.
In this realistic fiction by Walter Dean Myers, Drew Lawson is a young African American male who plays basketball for James Baldwin Academy. Drew grows up in a very bad neighborhood in Harlem. Drew just wants to be the first to make it out of Harlem. Drew wants to play for Division on college team. Drew believes that playing basketball is the only way out of Harlem. There will be scouts watching the second half of the season, but there is one problem there are two new players on the team. He never made it to the NBA because of one problem. In my opinion this book is rated a five because of how it is told. It is very realistic it almost feels like you are in that exact situation. If you play basketball and you live in a terrible enviroment, and all you want to do is succeed this is the right book for you. I really loved this book because I feel Drew and I are sort of similar. I feel this way because we have a loving family and want to make it, but the only thing is I don't live in a bad enviroment. This is so real especially if it relates to you and your life. The book is given five stars because the tone of voice that the author speaks in.
Drew Lawson, the outstanding African American basketball player. It's told in first person by Drew and he makes you feel like you are right beside him or in the stands. He had the most game in the city for his age group,he lived in a rough part of town so his mother is always cautious. Young kids were getting killed his age and it worried her. Drew had a dream to play in the NBA and his teamates thought he could too.
He was the leader of his High School basketball team. Until the new kid comes to town with serious game. He was just about the only white boy on the team. Drew knows that this kid could take his spot he is trying to not loose his temper because basketball is his only way out. Now he has to really step up his game to make sure he is not a problem.
I rate this book a 3 because i understanded a lot of the book because i play basketball but they should have gone through a little more detail in the games.
Drew Lawson a senior in high school has dreams to go to the NBA. Drew plays point guard at James Baldwin Academy. The team almost made it to the regional finals in Drew’s junior year. in the first half of his senior year is going even better. He had been told that the second half of the season is when the scouts and the college coaches actively start searching for talent. however Drew runs in to a problem when two white kids join the team. this is a problem for drew because the coach is starting to pay attention to them more than the rest of the team. drew grew up in Harlem and has witnessed street violence all his life. he wants to go to the NBA make money so he can help his family move out of Harlem. i enjoyed reading this book and i would rate it 5 stars. this book really gave me the point of view of growing up in Manhattan and trying to get noticed so he could make it to college this book i believe can prepare me for the future.
This book is a funny and a sporty book. It shows the work it takes to be a basketball player and what it means. This book is about a high-school teen that plays basketball for his high-school. They are on the road to winning a state championship! To see if they make it read the book. One thing that I loved about this book is how descriptive everything is. So it's really easy to get an almost accurate picture in your head. I don't like the time it takes to get somewhere in the book though. The author Walter uses a lot of imagery and humor. This book is filled with funny things that everyone can laugh about. Also this book gives the clearest image in your head, because of how descriptive it is. This book is great for anyone that loves sports or just basketball. I recommend anyone reads it if they like or love sports.
Drew Lawson is a phenomenal basketball player, with a dream of playing in college and maybe even the NBA. He is in high school, growing up in Harlem where he has seen people make it to the NBA,and has also seen people throw their lives down the drain. Drew has a passion for basketball like no one else and knows he can achieve his goal. With tough decisions and keeping his cool in very difficult times, Drew will fight harder than anyone else to win. You'll have to read to see if Drew achieves his goal.
Walter Dean Myers is a well know sports writer with many great novels. Myers even has a New York Times Bestseller, Monster, another great read. I strongly recommend this book to any sports fan.
This bookk is alright. Its not hard to read and you should finish it quickly, but if you dont like basketball the n you shouldnt read cause it mainly about basketball. Its about this dude named Drew and hes in the schools Basketball team. He trys to get to the next level in basketball, trying to be the best to win the finals, but theres a lot of good players and new teammates. Inside he learns more about life and what hes going to do, going to a division 1 college. But you have to read it find out the rest.
Drew Lawson is a star high school basketball player for Baldwin High School. He was a superstar until coach brought in new players and one of them turned into a star. It was up to Drew to play really well towards the end of the season as his team was fighting for a playoff spot. The team makes the playoffs, which was one of my favorite parts in this book. I like this book because there is a clear theme in this book to never give up. I was happy that Drew was able to commit to play at DePaul University.
A quick read that tells the story of a NY City kid who wants to play Division I college basketball. It's pretty well written and I can see how it might inspire young boys to work harder at life and avoid trouble, but it's not good enough for me to recommend.
If you like basketball this book is not bad. I think at times the author gets lost in what he is trying to do in this book and kind of wanders about in his story. Overall the book is entertaining.
I had no hesitation choosing this book honestly. I have done quite a bit of Research and read a lot of reviews on Walter Dean Myers. I knew he was the perfect author for me because the way he dives right into the story and it gets you hooked instantly. The Star in this book is Drew Lawson he plays the main character role in this book. He’s from a crime filled City of Harlem. Walter Dean Myers I think anyway does a great job by showing how bad this kid has it. Drew Lawson though has some big time dreams for himself. But Drew knows in order to accomplish his dream on playing in a D1 school will be no cake walk.
I like this book quite a bit. If I got the chance to make things different or tweak it a little bit. I wouldn’t because I thought the book met my standards and it was perfect to my eye. But somethings people may not like about the book is how many basketball terms there are. Someone that isn’t around basketball probably won’t understand that. But for a basketball book it lived up to expectations. Another thing someone may not like is the little time he’s actually not playing basketball. It does show some background at the beginning which was nice. I’m sure more advances readers would have other negative comments but I don’t.
This book is in my top 5 all time. First off I loved the background to Drew Lawson. A little scrawny kid from Harlem trying not to make it out of the crime filled town. He goes through a lot of tough moments throughout which really got to you as a reader. This book grabbed you from the beginning which i’ve never experienced. Like I said before this a just a perfect tale where he makes it out with no wounds. Drew Lawson always kept a good attitude striving for that D1 scholarship. And when your one of the best on the team and some white kid comes and takes it from you it will cause some adversity in your career. But he just used it as motivation. All I think about it another book to continue the great Drew Lawson story throughout life. And I also think this book is the type of thing to happen in real life. Which made me even more into because of that.
This book was very well written. It had just the right amount of details in it to make it perfect to my standards. And I could easily understand what I was reading it made sense to me and so I think it would be a good choice for other too. Another that made it a good read is the role the characters played. It just wasn’t completely about Drew because the characters had a good background to them to make it look believable and such. I learned a good lesson from this book, I learned to never give up on your dreams and never stop working because there is someone in another gym putting in just as much work to take your spot and your place in life.
In Conclusion, I clearly would recommend this book a sport hearted person. As a read to the end I wanted to know what happened to that kid Drew Lawson in his life. Did he go on to be that amazing basketball in college? Did he make it out of that crime filled town of Harlem? These questions are all the reasons I hope Walter Dean Myers makes a another book to further up on the Story of Drew Lawson and his adventurous journey of
This book is a fiction book about a high school kid named Drew and his basketball team on their journey to state the teams have their ups and downs but they get through them all in the end or do they. The theme in this book is that whatever life deals you, you can get through it and will if you give some effort. It might take several tries but keep dreaming and working till you get what you want. The plot of my book takes place in the hood of New York. The main character of my book is Drew lawson Drew comes from a poor family so he needs ball to get him to college on a scholarship since he isn't very book smart. Drews basketball team has two new players at the beginning of the year that are automatically given starting spots Drew doesn't think this is to fair but he works through it and comes out on top. The plot takes you through their teams season and you learn a lot. My character is Drew Lawson he is the main character in the book and he is the one telling the story. He is the leader of their basketball team you could say. Drew is hard working caring and a little bit disrespectful at times. Drew has a short temper with his coaches and teammates but he respects his parents in the end. I think that Drew is a lot like most professional athletes because they have all had to work very hard to get good at their sports just like Drew and lots of they have short tempers. At first, my book was not very interesting but towards the middle/ end, it got a lot better because we started to hear about the games so there was a lot of action. I think that the author did a very good job showing what the hood in New York is like but also not being too graphic. several times it the book the author raises the issue of disagreeing with a coach or teammate, the coaches wanted to slow the game down but the kids were used to the fast-paced game and at first were not willing to work with the coach. I think the larger issue could be that we have to get along with others even if we do not agree with what they stand for this could gender equality or gun rights we still all have to get along in this world. My advice to future readers is to not let the beginning bore you too much because the book gets a lot better towards the middle or end. My emotions during this book at first were bored because it was slow paced and nothing was happening but towards the middle, I was excited and nervous about who was going to win and what would happen next. I would suggest this book to you if you enjoy reading about sports but if you don't this is not the read for you.
