The book is in great shape with some wear and aesthetic flaws. There is some writing/highlighting in the book but it is not very much. This was used for homeschooling. Ships within 1-2 business days.
Jay Wile learned about his love for chemistry when his dedicated parents bought him his first chemistry set. Many stink bombs and a few explosions later, he was hooked! Although he loved chemistry, he also had many other interests. For a while, he thought about becoming a concert pianist, but unfortunately, his fingers were not long enough (no kidding!). As he was finishing up his high school years, he became extremely interested in the theater and began to pursue a career in acting. Partly because he learned the science behind some of the special effects of the plays in which he performed, he eventually went back to his first love: chemistry.
He went to the University of Rochester in upstate New York to study chemistry, and while he was there, he began working on nuclear chemistry experiments. He became so fascinated with nuclear chemistry that he stayed at the University of Rochester and got a Ph.D. in that field. For several years, he did research in the field under the auspices of the Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation. This research led to several grants and many publications. While doing research, Dr. Wile was also an assistant professor of chemistry.
Dr. Wile's love of science is demonstrated by the many awards he has won for excellence in teaching and research. He has also presented numerous lectures on the topics of Nuclear Chemistry, Christian Apologetics, Homeschooling, and Creation vs. Evolution. He has published 30 articles on these subjects in nationally-recognized, peer-reviewed journals, and has 9 books to his credit, most of which belong to the award-winning "Exploring Creation with" series of junior-high and high-school science courses.
This book is amazing! Dr. Wile lays everything out so clearly, and makes it easy to understand. Very well done! I especially loved how all of it was based on the Bible and creation. This not only taught me biology, but strengthened my world view! My future children are definitely doing this along with his other science courses for their high school science! Love love love! Definitely recommend for all high schoolers! I did it for tenth grade, but it is totally appropriate for grades 9-12.
I apologize in advance for the following. This is an exasperated student’s personal opinion, and I sincerely respect Dr. Wile. Biology is one of my favorite subjects, and I recommend this book over many, many others. I’m just picky when it comes to academic writing, and my high standards are not everyone’s. I have copy-edited College biology textbooks before, and perhaps that critical mindset carried over here. Thank you for understanding that my review is just that, and does not negate another’s opinion or devaluate Dr. Wile’s important work.
HOOOOHHHHH BOOOOYYYYY Thank God I am done with that course and, what's more, got through it without throwing the book across the room. Maybe it just seemed stupid to me because my entire family is made up of biology doctorates and I literally grew up in a university biology classroom, or maybe it seemed stupid to me because it was stupid. And don't even get me started on his GRAMMAR. UGH. HOW AM I ALIVE. Anyway. I sincerely respect Dr. Wile, but propose that in the future he keeps to his field of nuclear chemistry. I even ignored the (still awful) grammar of his physical science textbook because the content was reasonable.
Oh well. Final is tomorrow (AGH!) and then I can banish this book's insipid definition to the scholastic dump wherein they belong. Sorry, Dr. Wile. Your concept was good, but choose a biologist to execute it in the future. *headdesks*
Oh, and to my dear friend Natalie: Please ignore this review. You did not see it. And under no accounts is it ever to come up in classroom discussion. Thank you, darling.
I had two problems with this book. The first is that quite a bit (more than is acceptable in a textbook) of the information was inaccurate or outdated, so I could never really trust anything they said. The second is that the author is constantly interjecting their opinion about how biology proves that creationism is true. Now, I am a creationist myself, but a textbook is not really the place to be making religious arguments. Also, most of the arguments for creationism are not conclusive, or even very convincing, and just come across as annoying.
I wasn't looking forward to learning biology, but this book made it both interesting and enjoyable! Biology became my favorite class of the day, and I seriously considered studying biology in college after reading this book. I loved it, and I would recommend it for school or for fun.
I'm not a big science person, but I felt this book described biology in a way that was understandable to someone who hasn't had much of a science background. I highly recommend this as a teaching tool.
Great book, written super well, can understand everything....but I just...nope...def not my fav science. Way too many terms to memorize and just little tiny details that I don't care about *cri* almost done....you got this....ha
Only the best Biology book out there. Wile makes what in most textbooks would be hard and seem advanced seem easy! Wile is not afraid to tell the truth about creation and how it was formed and who created it. I give my hat to the author.
This book is amazing! I felt like I understood everything so well and I loved it. I love how strongly Bible-based all of the facts are and how amazingly this book defends Christianity from a biological point. 👏👏👏👏
This textbook, though very engaging, has wayyyy too many political opinions in it. If you take out their constant theological remarks, it's actually a really good textbook. The writing style is easy to read, they're very rigorous, and they give you a lot of experiments to complete. However, it is completely inappropriate of them to give you questions on theological opinions in a science textbook! I understand that they wanted to make a program that honored creation, and I respect that. They have every right to believe what they want. But they gave me questions to answer in a study guide such as "Does a wise man trust in God or science", that they should not ever grade students on. On issues such as Global warming and evolution, they spend more time trying to convince me it's inaccurate rather than actually teach me the concept! That being said, I don't want to diminish the fact that on non-controversial topics such as cells and the human body, they are very rigorous and well-written. While the obnoxious political talk makes up maybe 10% of the book, the other 90% is great. I'd just recommend using other up-to-date free resources such as "Crash Course Biology" on YouTube or Khan Academy alongside this program so ensure you are getting a complete, accurate depiction of Biology.
I am currently in a nursing class, and I couldn't be more thankful for the foundation I received from this Biology course! Dr. Wile has an awe for God's creation; He lifts the reader's eyes to Him, and explains how biology is one more testimony of God's greatness.
To be quite honest, before I read Dr. Wile's textbooks, I really didn't enjoy science at all. I actually completely hated it and wouldn't have been caught dead in a nursing class! But I am so thankful for how the Lord used this course to give me a sense of wonder for His design.
I would highly recommend this textbook, along with "Exploring Creation with Chemistry" and "The Human Body: Fearfully and Wonderfully Made [anatomy & physiology]."
This was my textbook, but I figured I would count it as a book I've read because I did read it. It was hard. Interesting ,yes, very, but hard. I cannot tell you the difference between meiosis and mitosis.
