Jay Wile learned about his love for chemistry when his dedicated parents bought him his first chemistry set. Many stink bombs and a few explosions later, he was hooked! Although he loved chemistry, he also had many other interests. For a while, he thought about becoming a concert pianist, but unfortunately, his fingers were not long enough (no kidding!). As he was finishing up his high school years, he became extremely interested in the theater and began to pursue a career in acting. Partly because he learned the science behind some of the special effects of the plays in which he performed, he eventually went back to his first love: chemistry.
He went to the University of Rochester in upstate New York to study chemistry, and while he was there, he began working on nuclear chemistry experiments. He became so fascinated with nuclear chemistry that he stayed at the University of Rochester and got a Ph.D. in that field. For several years, he did research in the field under the auspices of the Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation. This research led to several grants and many publications. While doing research, Dr. Wile was also an assistant professor of chemistry.
Dr. Wile's love of science is demonstrated by the many awards he has won for excellence in teaching and research. He has also presented numerous lectures on the topics of Nuclear Chemistry, Christian Apologetics, Homeschooling, and Creation vs. Evolution. He has published 30 articles on these subjects in nationally-recognized, peer-reviewed journals, and has 9 books to his credit, most of which belong to the award-winning "Exploring Creation with" series of junior-high and high-school science courses.
The book is full of inaccuracies. It looks like a real science book but it is all Christian propaganda. When I transferred to public school I basically had to relearn science.
Excellent homeschooling resource, and a great introduction to science from a Christian perspective. The guy who wrote it is a scientist himself and clearly knows what he is talking about, and introduces each concept in a clear and easy to understand manner (with some nice experiments and "on your own" questions to spice things up), while also pointing out a lot of important things that more mainstream science textbooks would rather ignore, such as the limitations and failings of science, and what it can and cannot do. I studied this as part of my 7th grade curriculum, and I still remember a lot of the things taught in it. I highly recommend it!
We LOVE this science book!! We weren't able to finish it all this year so I will pick it up right where we left off for next year. The writing is engaging and teaches the kids to think critically, presenting both sides of the scientific argument. When each module is finished I feel the kids could argue intelligently for what they believe about the origins of the earth and the life that dwells on it. May 2012
May 2013 - We finished the entire book this school year and were blessed by the engaging content in every module. General Science was our first experience with Apologia books, but with the level of knowledge and understanding my children received, we are sold on Apologia texts for the rest of their school careers.
I really enjoyed this book until. . . . . . . . I got to the chapters about the human body. I'm not gonna lie: I found them really boring! Aside from that, a Gr8 read!
Dr. Jay L. Wile has done it again. He has written an exciting text book that keeps my students' attention.
Please note: It is a CHRISTIAN TEXT BOOK and in this study of creation vs. evolution it is essential to know this. Wile tries to do an even handed job of explaining both positions but he is a creationist which is a plus for those who want to teach from that perspective without revising text content in a secular book.
Wile manages to make complex ideas such as 'uniformitarianism' and 'geological column', 'principle of superposition' and the structure of DNA understandable to the upper elementary- junior high level student.
Exploring Creation with General Science begins with a brief history of science and then discusses science, applied science and technology. Wile does an excellent job of explaining the way to make assertions about discoveries and archaeology using the internal, external, and bibliographic tests.
There are scattered throughout the chapter questions for students to do "On Your Own" (with answers at the end of each chapter) and a thorough study guide question page to prepare for the end of the chapter exam.
This text book moves from the origin of creation to study of the human digestive, respiratory, circulatory, lymphatic, endocrine, urinary and nervous systems. Really a very amazing amount of science all very clearly presented and understandable to the student.
This here is my elder daughter's 8th Grade science text. It's a general introduction to science, starting with the history of science, going on to teaching the scientific method and then giving a basic overview of various areas of scientific study. It's enjoyable to read and explains things very well. (or at least well enough for me to understand it. There's a companion CD-ROM available for those who want a little audio-visual help.) Even my artistic-minded daughter enjoyed it and was able to put together acceptable lab reports. As the title suggests, the book takes a creationist viewpoint, but unlike It Couldn't Just Happen, it doesn't hit you over the head with propaganda. Of course, I'm sure someone who is not creationist would disagree. Anyway, I definitely think it's a textbook worth checking out.
We used this text for my 7th grader last year. What a great book! True science from a creation perspective! Some books written from a christian point of view are filled w/Bible stories and scripture, (which is great for a Bible study!) but lack much real information pertaining to science. Not this series. Wiley is brilliant and writes in a conversational style, so it doesn't read like a dry text book but like a teacher who is talking to you. My son loved it and we went on to Wile's next book this past year, Exploring Creation Through Physical Science. The experiments are easy and fun to do and show your student the concepts visually. We intend to keep w/Wile's books all through high school.
I loved this book!! It was so interesting and fun! This was my 8th grade science. I did it with some friends, and it was enjoyable. I learned a lot too! This book is easy to understand, and a very cool book to read, even if not for school.
As a homeschooler, I appreciate this type of science textbook. Dr. Wile speaks to the students at their level, and offers experiments that are easy to conduct without spending a fortune. I wish MY school textbooks had read like this!
This book is just so amazingly amazing you'd be amazed at how amazing it is. Yes, I'm bad at describing things. It's very well written and full of interesting facts.
My favorite science curriculum: science made real, science married with history, science for readers, science that fascinates. Love it. A new way to learn science.
