This title on Camille Pissarro, the oldest of the impressionist artists gives a good brief overview of his life events and works. Basically his theme was the outdoor world and even in later life with an eye problem Pissarro painted outdoor cityscapes from various rented rooms that are quite beautiful. Currently Pissarro is my major interest of the Impressionists.
Venezia attempts to introduce young people to artists in his "Getting to Know..." series. It's difficult for me to know why a child would pick this up or how it would appeal to him or her. I think it would be a more successful book if it had begun with the spread on pages 10 and 11 -- a cartoon of a boy drawing caricatures of swarthy seamen.
I like to learn about the obstacles faced and how the subject overcame them. I found Pissarro's story to be much more interesting than I would have thought. I recommend this book toanyone with an interest in art and in The Impressionists in particular.
