Ceaușescu And The Securitate: Coercion And Dissent In Romania, 1965 1989

Rate this book
First Published in 2017. This book contains Deletant's research and view that an inescapable feature of life in Romania under Ceausescu was the ubiquity of the Securitate or the security police, known officially for much of the period as the Department of State Security of the Ministry of the Interior. He seeks to right the omission in Romanian literature, until now, of the mechanism of terror which Stalin used in Romania to enforce his will and about the organisation of the Department of State Security.

The topic is a difficult one to cover and sometimes the author seemed to be taken slightly off course. The details however are both fascinating and at times frightening and maybe if organised slightly differently could have packed a much greater impact. The subject is one that is difficult to cover accurately since by its very nature those who were involved would rather others were not made aware of the truth. It is now over 25 years later and the good news is that many, if not all, levels of Romania is recovering from this hell. It is now down to the people to keep this progress going and not step back into the darkness.
