"Aw geez, that isn't a Dinosaur Comics book, unabridged and in full colour, AND with all three secret texts for each comic included, is it? It is! SO AWESOME.
"This book features an introduction BY MY HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH TEACHER, MS. JANET COVER. Yes. We even met for lunch when I asked her to write it. It was really really nice.
"I also wrote an index for it that includes, among other things, all the Mega-Man relationship analogies included in the book (there is this many: one. But it's a good one!). It's even got special guest Dinosaur Comics done Kate "Hark! A Vagrant" Beaton, Anthony "Nedroid" Clark, John "Pictures for Sad Children" Campbell, Randall "XKCD" Munroe and David "Wondermark" Malki! WHOAH. Also there's an illustration of me flexing where you can see my pancake tattoos. It's the best book ever, except if you include the previous two books, in which case they're are each and all TIED FOR FIRST.
"tl;dr: If you only buy one book today, I think PROBABLY you should make it this one." --Ryan
2.5 Stars Like most gag-a-day comics, this was very hit-and miss. While I like the idea of a comic about talking dinosaurs and can appreciate the challenge of writing one in which only the dialogue changes, I also feel that using the same six panels in every strip is very limiting.
The recurrent art works really well in some cases--it makes for some funny juxtaposition (T-Rex contemplating social norms or the meaning of life as he prepares to stomp on a house, for example), or sometimes just adds another level of absurdity to an already silly idea--but often it just seems weird and poorly thought out. It doesn't help that many of the comics consist of a lot of dialogue jammed into a very small space, resulting in walls of text that don't really fit organically into the layout of the comic.
Despite its problems, I actually think Dinosaur Comics has a lot going for it. It contains a lot of very intelligent, culturally relevant humor, and the timing is pretty good for the most part--an impressive feat, given its considerable limitations. I enjoyed it in small doses, but reading it as a Webcomic of the Month felt like a bit of a chore and I doubt I'll follow the comic regularly.
It's a Dinosaur Comics book. I think you probably enjoy them or are annoyed by the format. I can't say I've ever laughed out loud at Ryan's writing but I always enjoy it.
Plus for this copy Christopher Hastings of Dr. McNinja fame went out of his way to get it signed/doodled for me. So bonus there.
