Cain Casey #8

The Devil You Know

Rate this book
Cain Casey has much to be thankful for—a loving wife in Emma, three beautiful children, and an ever-expanding family. Her business continues to grow, giving her the power to keep it all safe, but is it? Unknown federal agents are not playing by the government’s rules, and the Russian mob comes seeking revenge for the losses Cain’s inflicted. Cain and Emma have agreed to partner with the local feds to root out their rogue agents, but their goals for the endgame are completely different. Cain wants to remove the threat the way she knows is best—permanently. There is also Nicola Antakov, who she plans to handle the same way.

Cain Casey is the devil you know. She loves her family and will do anything to keep them safe and whole.

This is the 8th book in the series, Vali added an interesting plot twist to keep me interested. In the saga. Also some of the bad people who have been out to get Cain from the beginning are finally caught and eliminated. This series is often violent when the evil people are caught do beware if this bothers you.

This entire series features Cain Casey and her wife, Emma. All of her cousins and kids are in the stories. They are all part of the Casey Clan and Cain takes care of everyone. She also pledges support to other crime families who she helps out when they are attacked.

I’d suggest reading the books in order so that you understand the relationships and events that have taken place in the past. It’s amusing to see how the FBI team that has followed Cain since day one, becomes closer to working with Cain to catch and eliminate various drug dealers, human traffickers and corrupt cops and agents.

The Devil we know and love - the Cain Casey saga continues
A new installment of the Devil series? Count me in, in, in —- and this one does not disappoint. The story started in previous books continues. So if you have not yet started with the Devil series do! It certainly is a treat if you love books firmly set in the morally gray area where you want to cheer on Caisey and her merry band of mostly mafia friends against the shenanigans of FBI and serious foes and competitors (who certainly are really evil).
This book is peppered with bullets and some scenes of extreme violence - quite realistic for the topic. Caisey, Emma and her family are gunned down and the FBI is playing shady games. The action is compelling, the threats are real and Emma steps up to protect the family. At the end some questions are answered, some threads are permanently dealt with, but we certainly need another Devil to rest peacefully (you hear, Ali!!).

I received an ARC from Bold Strokes Books via netgalley. The review is left voluntarily.

I have two completely separate reviews because these books often feel like there are two separate plot lines. Let’s start with the relationships. I am not a fan. They are sappy, repetitive and completely over the top. It’s too much. Thankfully it’s not a huge portion of the book(s). Then we get to the main plot with the action/mystery and I do a 180. There is so much going on and you definitely are kept on your toes. It’s fun and total revenge porn and I’m here for it. That being said, often there are two many moving story lines and it makes it impossible to keep up from book to book. I refuse to reread all 8,000 books every time a new one comes out. Vali does a good job rewinding on all the plots but it’s still a challenge to remember the details of where everything left off. (Ok, so I might go back and reread and take notes so I can remember going forward.)

I have enjoyed many of Ali Vali’s books but unfortunately I have not read any of the previous seven books in the Cain Casey series. I actually own a few and put off reading them until I had access to all of the books. But I couldn’t resist requesting The Devil You Know. Vali does a great job of catching a new reader up to the characters and connections, but my enjoyment would have been enhanced if I’d read the previous books. Cain and her friends, family and enemies are complex and in my mind I imagine the author has a whole wall chart to keep the connections straight.

In this book Cain, who is the head of an Irish mobster family in New Orleans, is under attack. Some enemies are expected like the FBI that maintains constant surveillance on the family. And others like Russian mobsters are always lurking as are others who want revenge on Cain and her wife Emma. The pair are very likable and loving as they are trying to raise their kids and keep everyone under their protection safe. I don’t want to give anything away but I enjoyed Cain trying to figure out who is behind current attacks. And I liked Emma standing firmly by her side and not flinching when things got tough. Now I’m more determined than ever to finish adding to my collection of books so I can binge the whole series.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bold Strokes Books for the ARC and i am leaving an honest review. (4.5 Stars)

And we're back...with Cain, Emma, the children, Remi, Dallas, and the rest of the crew.

In this 8th book in the series, Cain faces a number of foes, including two Russian families, Colombians, and FBI agents doing illegal things. There are two shootings, one pretty violent scene of retribution, and a subplot about trafficking. Oh, and toward the end, some happy events.

As always, the love that Cain and Emma share is a thread throughout, and we begin to see Emma playing a larger role in the business.

I don't know what this book would be like for someone just picking up the series here. But since I've read all of the previous 7 books, plus the prequel, I was highly engaged in seeing how once again Cain prevails over multiple adversities.

Ali Vali does it again! The Cain Casey series is one of my all time favourites and if you’ve read the rest of the books, you know what to expect from this one: Cain Casey taking care of her family, Ali Vali’s style of writing, a happy ending, lots of torture and vengeance, and lots of love. I was sooo looking forward to reading this and it certainly didn’t disappoint!!!
Thanks so much for the ARC of this book!

Cain and Emma are stronger then ever as they have remove a few dangers from their lives there still dangers that they don’t know where it’s coming from as Emma steps up more to protect Cain and their family once again is being threaten as they form uneasy alliances. I won’t give into more but this series I would love to see as web series I like despite danger there are quiet moments with the family and how everyone steps up.

I love this series about the Casey family. Maybe all mobsters aren’t all bad. After Cain is shot, Emma hands out the punishment as they try to figure who is shooting members of the family.

I simply love this series and was so excited to see that Ms. Vali had written this 8th book in the Cain Casey Series. Each book brings more depth to the individuals and the story. Emma, Cain Casey’s wife, is especially growing into her role of the wife of the head of the family. No longer is she the sweet, young bar waitress that we were introduced to in book one. She is now the true partner in the daily operations of the family business while also raising their three children.

Their children are growing up. Hayden, their eldest child, is beginning to learn more about the family business while Hannah is a cute little girl who continues to make me smile with her antics. I would not be surprised if a fourth child is added to the brood.

The story is exciting, complex, and gripping. I like how Ms. Vali reviews what has transpired in the book during the final chapter and what we might see in the next book. Of course, I can wait and hope she writes it soon.

I highly recommend this book and the entire series. I rate The Devil You Know with 5 out of 5 stars.

Sorry for any mistakes it's like two something in the morning

All right so this book is good there's nothing negative for me to say about this book series The only thing I was slightly disappointed with and pretty much have gained up on it changing is the narrator for the series is Paige I'm not a big fan of Page voice acting I know a lot of people like her voice acting I don't she has however gotten better she used to do this terrible draw what she used to draw out words that that wasn't drawn out but other than that she did a decent job I got the book in audio because I had a credit and I didn't have 10 bucks on me at the time to actually pay for the ebook form that's how I would have won about getting the book if I could have got a different voice actor I would have went with Abby Creighton one of the things that knocks pages performance down is that these characters are raised in New Orleans since they were kids until adulthood New Orleans do have accents certain way they say words compared to how other people would say words and she doesn't put that in when she speaks these characters so that was disappointing and I didn't like her voice for Emma I will admit that Emma sound like a teenager to me instead of a grown ass woman with three babies.

No like I said I would have got Abby to do the voice for this entire series Abby Creighton with a knocked us out the park including accents if you want a good example of Abbey Creighton's work and you've never listened to her read anything before her old work isn't bad but her new stuff is way better she has grown her craft and the best book for me that showcase her voice and it has a ton of good reviews on audible would be easy Nevada series not only is that book fun action packed comedy the voice acting Abby has so much fun reading the book you can tell by the way she sounds so that's the best place to get a feel for Abby when it comes to different accents her male voices are phenomenal so that's my recommendation for anyone that wants to take a listen to Abbey Creighton start with that book you love that series regardless you love her voice acting and then go read some of her old stuff listen to some of her old work and you'll see the difference.

My next option would have been Lori to me does an amazing job when it comes to voices especially in feminine voices especially when one character is more masculine than the other she just comes up with really sexy voices I mean I think one of her favorite voices that fans love is I'm not a hero series and the love interest in there the lawyer her voice crazy .
Anyway but that didn't happen so I just you know gave you two voices to go listen to in in when it comes to lesbian works and lesbian books those are my favorite voice actors moving on.

I'm not going to spoil too much of this book because by now I think we all are pros and we've all been following this since day one or like myself I followed it a little bit later in the cycle I think by the time I found they had like six books but who cares.

when you find it start from book zero which is the prologue move down just keep on going down that's the only way you going to understand what's going on in this series do not skip do not jump between books you're going to be confused these books work like a chain in links you can't miss one it'll come undone so with that being said for those who have read the series and we have not read the prequel like myself I recommend not well you can if you want to I personally just can't because I'm very sensitive and as much as I love listening and hearing about Cane's sister I don't want to actually meet the sister because I know what happened to her and it's a little close to home for me because I have a baby cousin who's more like a sister to me who does have down syndrome and just knowing what happened to Maria f****** me Up.

So I can't go to the prologue and read and get to meet Maria as Maria because I've been ruined because of what happened to Maria so that's my reason for not reading the prologue plus I just I can't go back I know everything already and I just can't go back and experience how they met for the first time I really hate doing that in the middle of a book series anyway if this would have been the first book I read as a newbie I would have been perfectly fine matter of fact Maria's ending probably would have hit me even more than it did just off of reading it through Cain's experience so that's my reason for the prologue but I still recommend it anyway to beginners so unless you have the same issue I do and you just don't want to then skip it you going to learn about it anyway as you continue on throughout the series so if you don't want the prologue then just start with book one and keep on moving down.

Characters two characters that stood out to me the most in this series especially this book Emma stepped up once again I'm not going to spoil it but she was amazing I really do enjoy her character this is why it's important not to skip because you miss out on these details plus you're going to be confused regardless but Emma did an amazing job in here I was very surprised which she decided to do.

The next character that surprised me too is Aiden. now Aiden is Emma and Cane eldest son and he's been growing these past books and now he's at the point where he slowly slowly slowly entering into the business Cane is not trying to rush him he's more like trying to rush but in this particular incident he gets the opportunity to do something awesome but also to let out his anger and that's something with surprising was to see his anger and to see how his family talks with him and and how a lot of them stepped in to guide him when Kane couldn't and I thought that was really interesting so yeah there are some interesting young folks in this story that I think are going to be with Aiden as he gets older he has to new male friends from the previous book if you've been keeping up who the young boys are they're a little bit older than Aiden but I could definitely see them being hopefully someone he can grow up with and would have his back as he get over but he got a lot of cousins so he's going to be good.

My hopes and predictions for this is that it keeps going as much as I like Aiden and his progress I really don't want to see him take over the business at any time I really just want Cane to do until she's 70 which is maybe unrealistic I don't know how long or how far the series is going to go but I want 30 books that's how many I want and it all evolving around Cane I just can't see this book being told from anyone else point of view Casey that's it for me.

Okay so this is a slight spoiler but it drew me crazy and if anyone is a softy like I am is probably enjoy crazy so I'm just going to tell you without spoiling anything somewhat but Hannah and we all know who Hannah is. it's fine okay she's going to be fine. So don't be pulling out your hair like I was doing or bouncing your leg cuz you're trying to rush through the chapters to find out what happened to Hannah Casey Cane find Hannah and Hannah is 100% font shaking up scared and misses her best friend she's going to be fine so that's the only spoiler I'm going to give because I drew me insane I just I needed to know that immediately my mind was going to bad places and I just I'm a softy and I don't like babies being hurt so Hannah's good.

Anyway get you get the book however you want to read it it's up to you and have some fun out of all her books that she's done this is by far not only the popular series but it's more of the darker version outside of her detective book and knocks out of her Las Vegas book these books are up there with one another I am looking forward to the next book in the Las Vegas book two and I'm also looking forward to the third book in the detective series hopefully those books get updated because there is a part of the Casey Cain universe so if you guys have finished that I recommend checking those book out I do not recommend the audio version I just don't the page reads them I'm not a fan of Page I said a thousand times but if you like page knock yourself out but I recommend the books however you guys decide to read it's not going to hurt.

The way I commit myself to book series is crazy sometimes. Yes, I didn't know about this series until last year but when I did, I just binge-read it because it was really good. This book is still intriguing, yes, I couldn't put it down. But I have to admit, there is something stagnant that happens to almost all book series, they start to feel slightly repetitive. My love for Cain Casey though is absolute so I will forego all that but I want what we had during Book 1, 2 and 3, that stuff was absolutely intoxicating.

There were good parts in this book, but there are just too many other characters which I have to admit don't interest me much. Like Nicola and Marisol are so not intriguing. I am more interested in Cain and her family and how she handles her enemies and in those first 3 books had her so fine, I was in love. And having the same problem for like 3 books and the time between each publication is just so long.

I am waiting for the moment when Cain will starting fighting the Feds with media. There was a slight of that happening because Dylan is crazy but yeah I guess we will have to wait for book 9. And a time jump because I want to see Hayden doing something.

I do love the Cain Casey series and especially the moral ambiguity. Cain is not a nice, law abiding citizen. But although she can kill people and break laws, she does not get involved in drugs or trafficking women and she will do absolutely anything to protect her family. And her family includes blood and chosen. She has a very strong and unwavering ethic.

I think I might reread the series and develop a family tree for Cain and Emma as there are so many cousins… blame it on her Irish heritage!

In this instalment we have Cain jousting with the FBI, many of whom foolishly underestimate her. She’s also helping Finlay, and Abigail, and trying to find ‘Lucy’, the young girl from a previous story.

The way we find ourself rooting for the Casey clan is testament to Ms Vali’s excellent writing skills. She creates a credible hero in Cain and even when she’s being ‘bad’, we understand her motives. And honestly, if I were part of her clan, I’d be approaching her just like these family members do.

I’m already looking forward to the next developments. But I don’t think I’ll be sharing a cigar with anyone any time soon…

I love this series and it just keeps getting better and better. You will not be disappointed at all.

Cain and Emma have gotten a few pieces off the board that have been threatening them, but new enemies emerge and Cain's life is once again in jeopardy. This time, Emma comes into her own more and protects Cain and her family. You don't know where the next attack is going to come. The FBI, the Russian mob, a friend. Who knows. Vali does a masterful job weaving it all together and keeping you on the edge of your seat with her incredible writing and fantastic storytelling.

You technically don't have to read the previous books, but I highly recommend it. I did and it added to the richness and development the author has done with this series.

My only con is when the POV switches suddenly in the same scene which take me out what's happening briefly.

Overall, this is a fantastic book and I can't recommend it enough. I received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review..

I enjoyed this sapphic mobster book. Cain and Emma were easily likable. Their commitment to family and deep love for each other is the thread running through this story. When Cain gets shot, Emma comes into her own with passionate protection of her wife. As other members of the family are attacked they try to figure out who is ordering these attacks. Is it the Russian mob, someone out for revenge, the FBI? The author takes us on a ride, leading us this way and that as we try to figure out the answer.

This being the 8th book in the series, I would suggest reading the previous ones first. That said, the author does a good job of giving us enough information to know the characters involved.

Thank you NetGalley and Bold Strokes Books for the arc. I leave this review voluntarily.

Excellent Series

I have read and RE-READ the 8 book series three times,
and will probably
RE-READ it again in
the future. The strong Female characters are well developed and woven together, adding strength and depth to the storyline. I love the Butch Women, and how they are portrayed as tacticians who are not afraid to live and be loved. I fell in love with Cain & Remi. The two of them are the glue that holders the large extended families together.

The FBI characters
are actually quite
pathetic sometimes, and inept most of the times. But the twists - turns keep you entertained. I will probably try to buy the series in paperback so that I can always read the story again

This is a series that keeps on giving. How to like and appreciate Derby Cain Casey is unsettling yet I am able to see pass that because of her love of family and especially Emma. This read has a focus on law enforcement and how some present themselves one way but if you look closer, you see the "real person" and it does not look good. The Russians are coming...actually, the Russians are here. We read more about Remi and Dallas, Muriel and Kristen, Abigail and Finley. We also get a glimpse of what Hayden is capable of. This series is violent and scary good which has me looking forward to the next book.

I love the Casey Clan, the mobster with a heart of gold. The entire extended family is back for the 8th installment, basically picking up where the 7th left off. To be honest, there are so many bad guys, some with old names and new names, that it took awhile for me to remember who everyone was and what they had done to incur Cain's wrath.

None of The Devil books are easy breezy reads, but The Devil You Know seems extra gruesome. There were a couple of scenes that, even reading on my phone, I had to cover up my face like I were watching it on TV.

But at the heart of it all is the relationship between Cain and Emma, one of the best couples ever written.

Cain Casey is finally back in another riveting story. Cain is trying to keep everyone safe while Emma is trying to keep Cain from another beating from the FBI. They’re both going to dropthe ball.
We’ve got the FBI, the Russians and those crazy lone agents on Cains tail. While Cain is still trying to find out where young Lucy is. How does a 5year just disappear?
This series is such a page turner you can’t put down and can’t wait for the next one.
Don’t miss this. If you don’t know Cain Casey start from the beginning. YOU. WILL. NOT. BE. DISAPPOINTED.

Highly recommend this. ❤️

I absolutely love this ongoing series. It's dark, it's got spice, and these women are the one's you want at your back when he'll comes your way. Cain and Emma have such a dynamic relationship that even this many books later, they still pull you in. The family is strong and takes no shit. Lesbian mafia queens? Yes please. And based on how this one ended, I'm waiting for another amazing installment.

Any additions to this series is always welcome as I’m a huge fan of Cain Casey. In this book, the battles with the FBI continue and the troubles with rival gangs abound. Perfection. Some loose ends too, which I always like because it means there’s a possibility of another book. Long may more cousins appear that need Cain’s cunning to keep their family alive.

I want more Cain Casey books!

I’ve been waiting for this story for a while now and I literally devoured every word of it so fast and I’m mad that it’s over so soon. I just love the chosen family theme in this novel and I wish that Cain and Emma were real so that I could be a part of their clan.

I wasn’t happy with the previous book, it portrayed Cain Casey as a vicious ‘mobster’, with no finesse, this book was much better. However, for me there were still probably too many pages devoted to irritating Russians.
If possible I would have given 3.5 stars.
