THE LAST MAN ON EARTH SHE'D EVER WANT TURNS OUT TO BE... THE ONE!
Though the name of her celebration and wedding cake business is up in lights, Bronte Ludlow doesn't care for the trappings of success. All that matters to her is her company, her independence and her heritage,The Dower House. Home to her ancestors since the seventeenth century, no way will she part with it to ‘a man with too much money and no soul’.

Nico Ferranti’s only passions are money and power... He's a man who stopped believing in romance long ago and Bronte's a romantic, yet the attraction sparking between them like fireworks over the Piazza del Popolo stuns Nico.

When Bronte's brother is badly hurt in a car accident in Rome, Nico whisks Bronte to the Eternal City. He wants her and he wants The Dower House and Nico Ferranti always gets what he wants.

But Bronte’s heart has already been broken by one ruthless charmer and although tempted she isn’t about to give up either her heart or her home to the charismatic Italian without a fight!

11/1 - I seem to be cursed to read only eBooks with editing problems, ranging from mediocre to glaring. Reckless Nights in Rome is currently hovering around the mediocre area.

Page 7
'Built in the seventeenth century for a trade Baron, Ludlow Hall...'

baron should only be capitalised when it's followed by the name of a baron, it's not necessary when you're talking about non-specific barons.

Page 8
'It had taken time, but he'd managed to sweet-talk Alexander to carry out a spot inspection...'

Sweet talk doesn't need a hyphen. to carry should be into carrying, otherwise the grammar doesn't flow properly.

Page 9
'...leave her to stew in her own juice.'

The idiom is stew in her own juices.

Page 15
'...with his eye on the main chance.'

The idiom is eye on the prize.

Page 30
'...she stared moodily into the road ahead...'

Nope, she's not staring into the road, if anything she's staring out at it (as she's in a car).

Page 52
'...to a land my family have lived in for generations.'

Her family haven't lived in the land, they've lived on it.

Page 74
'Alexander stood next to a Rosie who was...'

The a shouldn't be there.

Same page
'...possessive gesture that had her brother eye him sharply and Rosie's eyebrows shoot into her hairline.
Nico signalled a waiter with a tray...'

In order to make the tenses agree, that should be eyeing and shooting. The way the second sentence is written it sounds as if Nico is waving a tray in the air in order to attract the attention of a passing waiter, not like the waiter is the one with the tray. Adding a to to the sentence between signalled and a and carrying instead of with would fix the confusion.

Page 76
'...when he spoke,'

As that's the end of the sentence that should be a full stop instead of a comma.

Page 95
'And she he couldn't think clearly...'

No he necessary there.

I think I might hate Nico. So far he seems to be a horrible person. All he cares about is money and where he can get more it. I am completely on Bronte's side when it comes to the desecration of her family home, possibly even more militantly than she is. A lot of her behaviour baffles me. If I was in her position he would be in no doubt about how much I disliked him, and not in a sexy 'enemies to lovers' romance book kind of way (which, I guess, is why that's not how she's behaving, otherwise the romance part of this book wouldn't go anywhere). I would be telling him to take a long walk off a short pier and where he could stick his money.

Her most baffling act was on page 56 when she realised that she had '...jumped down his throat over an invitation to the Grand Opening of Ludlow Hall and that she would have to apologise.' I do not understand her belief that she should apologise. Why would she be interested in going to the grand opening? She's not happy about what he did to the hall, her childhood home, so why on Earth would she want to celebrate it? Considering the way she feels her previous behaviour is completely believable, but the reasoning for her going to a formal event that is obviously going to put them together in an intimate setting that involves sexy dresses and slow dancing is not believable. It's not realistic that someone with the strong feelings she shows to begin with would suddenly, and so easily, change her mind and give him the chance to effect her beliefs. To be continued...

20/1 - I finished this over a week ago but was too sick to get out of bed, let alone continue working on a review for a book whose editing mistakes number in the high double figures. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how masochistic I'm feeling) I continued to keep notes on my Kindle through to the end.

Page 105
'The oven pinged and she rose to slide out her apple upside cakes out of the oven...'

That's one too many 'outs' in the one sentence.

Page 106
'Then scene in the hallway of her home'...

That should be 'the'.

Page 107
'Straight into teams of Police, Ambulance and Fire crews...'

Why are the emergency services capitalised?

Page 110
'...at his office in the City.'

Why is 'city' capitalised?

Page 111
'Bronte bit into another cake...'

First, there has been no mention of her eating a previous cake, the only activity involving cake was when she got them out of the oven so the 'another' doesn't make any sense. Second, she's eating a second cake?! She ate a whole cake by herself and has now started on a second? That seems a bit extreme.

Page 112
'He rammed his feet into Tod's loafers.'

Is Tod a fashion designer I'm unaware of, or did Nico steal Tod's shoes when we weren't looking?

Page 117
'And knew exactly how to inflict pain on a man.'

Are there any adults (probably children too) in the world who don't know how to 'inflict pain on a man'?

Page 118
'He grabbed a cake from the rack and bit into it. [...] He swiped another cake.

Now he's eating multiple cakes, too? Maybe they're cupcakes and Mackenzie forgot to specify...?

Same page
'"Apple turnovers. Miss breakfast?"'

Now they're turnovers? 'Turnovers' are not upside down cakes, turnovers are made with pastry and upside down cakes are...well...cakes. Pick a baked good and stick to it.

Still the same page
'Those dark eyes sparkled into hers and he sent her a wicked smile. For a moment she saw the little boy in the man...'

I would not be comfortable with a 'little boy' sending me that kind of 'wicked smile'.

Page 120
'"Will you come to the Ball with me?"'

Why is 'ball' capitalised?

Page 146
'...a smile for her that would melt the polar ice cap...'

There's more than one polar ice cap, so that should be 'caps'.

Page 156
Second sex scene with no evidence of a condom... Is that because she thinks she can't get pregnant (although we're not supposed to know that yet)? Has she forgotten what else Nico's semen might contain?

Page 156
'...her appointment in the City.'

Still no capitals for 'city'.

Same page
'Her tone was friendly but polite.'

How can your tone be one without the other? I think that 'but' should be an 'and'.

Page 164
'Alexander was acting out...'

Not an attractive way to describe an adult, especially one who is going to go on to star in his own romance book.

Page 166
'...containers of butter cream icings in twenty different s.'

???

Page 168
'Fear gleefully caught her throat as Rosie gripped her hand.'

Why 'gleefully'?

Page 170
'...the ruination of his Armani shirt.'

Why would his shirt (expensive designer, or not) be ruined by tears? It's not like she has literally cried 'buckets of tears' and then poured them over his head.

Page 173
'A black chauffeur Bentley purred to the kerb...'

That sentence should read 'A black, chauffeured Bentley...', otherwise it sounds like Mackenzie is calling the driver Bentley and saying that he's black and that he purred his way to the kerb which gives me hilarious images of someone pretending to drive (like in Playschool or The Wiggles) and making a purring sound while Nico and Bronte get into the pretend car.

Page 177
'God, he probably expect her to give him...'

That should be 'expected'.

Same page
'...helped himself to large brandy...'

That should be 'to a large'.

Page 186
'...which probably cost four figures...'

Is that meant to be a different version of the idiom 'double digits'? 'in the thousands' would've been a better choice.

Page 195
'...perfectly happy with what their report.'

The 'what' is unnecessary.

Page 206
'"Hubba bubba, he's gorgeous."'

That should be 'hubba hubba' as 'hubba bubba' is the name of a chewing gum made by the Wrigley company.

Page 217
She realised that to tell him she'd spoken to his brother because he looked and sounded so much like Nico himself made her look and sound utterly ridiculous.

No, that's a perfectly good reason for talking to a strange man who sits down with you in a café.

Page 220
'"I will have the rest of my life tainted by my father, Bronte."'

Considering what they're talking about (moving on from the way his father treated his mother), that sentence makes more sense if it's 'won't have'.

Page 231
'Shame she could care less.'

That's a stupid phrase, especially as it doesn't mean what Mackenzie seems to think it means - she is literally saying that at some point in time there is the possibility that she will care less (about the impact the dress she's wearing is having on Nico) than she does now. It should be couldn't care less.

Same page
'The usual suspects, as she thought of them, were all here and dressed up like peacocks.'

Why are they 'peacocks' and she's not?

Page 261
'...as he recalled one occasion when he'd made love to her without protection.'

Really?! Only one? I counted at least three, two in twelve hours.

And that's the end, finally. All those editing problems are enough to make me unlikely to read any more of Mackenzie's books (although it looks like I picked up a 'bundle' of her books around the same time I got this one, I might wait a year or two in order to give me time to forget how annoying the errors in this book were). As usual, I'm glad this one was free.

I found this to be an enjoyable, passionate read.

The author’s use of dual viewpoints means you can really get to know both Nico and Bronte and see the story from both angles. I’m always a fan of Latin heroes with dark, smouldering looks and machismo – and I liked Bronte too. There’s something very appealing about an entrepreneurial baker!

The characters’ first meeting had me smiling (not ideal to meet the man of your dreams while hanging out of a toilet window…), and from that point on I found that I wanted them to be together. The author leads the characters through obstacles and trials that they feel realistic, and I liked the fact that, beyond the passion between the protagonists, the story has the concept of family at its core.

For me, the best element of the book is the description:
But then he saw her.
His breath caught in his throat.
Lei e cosi bella.
She was beautiful.

The black silk gown clung to small breasts and narrow hips. As she swung the silver curtain of her hair to one side, she turned and he got a full view of her back, naked and smooth as silk.
His tongue felt thick in his mouth.

A young man, his colour high, dragged Bronte laughing and protesting onto the dance floor. He spun her around, held her back against him thrusting his pelvis in time to the hot beat of the music. The uplights shone through her dress.

Nico couldn’t believe what he was seeing. Good God, she was naked? Eyes narrowing, his mouth a tight line, he stalked towards her.
There is much attention to detail in the description, and care is taken to explore character’s feelings, which makes for a strong connection between the reader and the story, the characters and the setting.

What stands out most in the book, though, is the passion – attraction, lust, sensuality, sexuality. It’s the kind of read that makes one fan oneself, without crossing the line into erotica.

In all, a fun, pleasing read, and when I finished the book, I found myself wishing it were double the length, as I was sad to be leaving the fictional world created by the author.

This is a great debut novel. I’ve become a bit jaded when it comes to romances; they all seem to follow the same formula. But this was the book of the month for a Goodreads discussion group I belong to, so I read it.. and was pleasantly surprised.

This book stands out from other romances for several reasons. One is the realistic character development. The main characters have areas of their lives where they are quite confident, and others where they are not so secure. Even the secondary characters are well developed and interesting. And the issues that keep Bronte and Nico from fully committing to each other are not contrived misunderstandings but real fears and concerns. Bronte, still recovering from an emotionally abusive relationship, is naturally distrustful of playboy Nico. And Nico has good reason to tread softly when dealing with the sister of his good friend and business partner, not to mention he has his own emotional scar tissue. Each has secrets that they are not yet ready to share–secrets that could be deal-breakers.

Last but not least, the sex scenes are well-written–very, very hot but never crude. All this is set against the backdrop of an old English estate turned luxury hotel and the street cafes, shops and exciting nightlife of Rome. Definitely a satisfying read and I look forward to more good things to come from CC MacKenzie.

Nico sure can get my panties wet, "he wasn't in the mood for this. "You were not spanked enough as a child, were you?" He can be so sweet when he wants to be, "please, do not worry. I should have made it clear the letter was an invitation and not another offer. But I could not resist bringing the spark to your eyes. You are quite beautiful when you are angry." Bronte the girl sure knows how to make Nico speechless, "are you any good at giving a woman a screaming orgasm?" He inhaled coffee and choked." He's also not shy about his feelings, "do not start something you are not prepared to finish, Bronte," he said arousal deepening his voice. He pressed his erection into her soft stomach. "I need to take you to bed." His thoughts can be entertaining at points, "what had the bast**d done to her? And monkey sex? What on earth was that?" I really loved reading this book, the characters were easy to fall in love with.

Nico is so hot I think my Nook left singe-marks on my lap where it rested while I was reading this book. Good thing e-readers come with ubiquitous covers so the other mommy's at the gymnastics lessons couldn't tell the reason I was squirming in my seat and biting my hand was because I was on fire! I loved how three-dimensional the characters were in this story and the way that it grabbed you and dragged you kicking and screaming (or in this case, hot, sweaty, and screaming) through the entire book. If I had to make one complaint, Nico came on a bit strong for me at first (if it had been me, I would have drop-kicked him in the crotch the first three chapters ... but I'm a martial artist). It had a plot, too. And believable, well-rounded secondary characters. And ... cake. Yes, this book even had cake! Can't wait to read the next book in the series.

I loved the book! I’m a sucker for cheesy romance novels. This one did have a great (not cheesy at all) story line though. I was pleasantly surprised by the whole story. I gave it four stars because of the super cheesy ending and the fact that one of the biggest “ plot twists” was so predicted way too early in the book. I would definitely read another story from this writer though.

I have to start by saying that I'm not totally sure whether I liked this story or not. I can say that I wasn't a fan of the robotic talking all the characters seemed to do. I couldn't really stand Bronte's character. She has no issue wearing the thin material, let it all out, dress but then has boob issues? Why does that not seem likely? Or the fact that it takes her so long to realize/believe that Nico likes/cares about her? I think Bronte just annoyed me too much.

Questions/Comments:

If Bronte's dress was see through, why did no one else seem to notice besides Nico?

"You had no right to kiss me. Touch me like that!" Please Bronte. I'm sorry but you're all eager to get it going on with the guy, what do you expect to happen? And no I'm not talking about sex. If she didn't want him to kiss or touch her, then why did she in the first place? Caught off guard? Okay, then why did it take her so long before she stopped him?

So we find out that Bronte isn't actually Alexander's full sibling. Apparently her mother had a fling and got pregnant by another guy. So? Why would that have caused issues with her mother/step father's will? That made no sense. Unless her stepfather (the guy she grew up thinking was her bio father) didn't like her or wanted to cause issues, but that wasn't the case at all. It just makes no sense.

Why would she have still felt mad or betrayed by her parents? Again no sense there either. It's not like she didn't grow up having the prefect life. Both her parents loved her dearly and what?

Why did Bronte not have an issue with Nico arrived and whipped out a condom? Obviously he was planning on having sex with her. For some reason I just imagine she would have had a hissy fit with that.

After having sex with Nico, in the family room?, Nico starts talking about Bronte's bedroom. Yes, Nico is interested in her house but come on Bronte! She thinks that right after sex, when he's obviously still in the mood, that he wants to suddenly talk about her bedroom? What interior design? Seriously.

"They're only breasts. I'm not defined by them." Again seriously? What a weird comment to make.

When you come downstairs to see your spouse/significant other or whoever making lunch for the two of you, who would respond/think of it this way? "In the middle of the table a heavy platter was piled high with wholemeal sandwiches filled with what appeared to be 'slivers of lean ham and cheese'." ?

Why did Bronte think her dead parents would be ashamed of her?

Alright....so Nico wants Bronte to stand in front of a mirror and watch what happens to herself when he's masturbating her? "I love looking at you when you come. Let me show you." Um....yeah....No. I'll just stick with my imagination thank you.

At one point near the beginning Nico mentions that he'll never marry or have children. Yet, after knowing she's having a relationship with him, all the things he's changing or whatever for her, even after he tells her that he would marry if he met the right woman....she's still clueless.

If Nico's grandfather had lied all those decades ago, why would his dying father have waited so long to get to know Nico? That made no sense to me either. Or Nico's half brother. Why wait so long?

When Anthony breaks in, or walks through the unlocked backdoor, Nico arrives and the alarm is going off. Huh? If the alarm would have started when Anthony came in, which wouldn't make sense since the door was unlocked...why would it suddenly be blaring now?

"Nico I'm a bastard!" Okay and?

This UK based author is a professional in finance, fitness, interior design, construction and of course writer of romance filled with passion.

Storyline: Nico Ferranti, a business tycoon who has an empire of businesses in hospitality industry across Europe, acquires Ludlow Hall, a prime property belonging to the Ludlow family. He partners with Alexander, a Ludlow family member wherein he comes across Bronte Ludlow, sister of Alexander. Nico, a cut throat businessman, who grew from dust, aims at acquiring The Dower House, inherited by Bronte and also running a successful wedding cake business under the name of Sweet Sensations. He first seduces Bronte in his own style, just like any other woman whom he wants to sleep with, in order to get his job done but later passionately falls in love with her, after his unending sexual encounters with her. Bronte also initially, hates Nico knowing his intention but later falls in love with him for the same reasons. Meanwhile, Alexander meets with an accident in Rome, while on a business trip. This is where and when, Nico differentiates his love from lust with Bronte. Both of them discover that they come from similar backgrounds of being alienated and cheated by their parents with respect to their births. Finally the story comes to a happy ending with Bronte getting pregnant and Nico marrying her and later being blessed with twins.

Positives: An exquisite book of extreme lust which matures into love later. The way sexual encounters between Nico and Bronte have been explained turns on any kind of reader. Once again, it is emphasized in this book that True love wins over all other emotions in this world. A woman’s orgasm has never been so well explained in any of the books I have read till now. The termination of a powerful man’s pride and arrogance at the sight of the woman he is destined to love is well brought out.
‘Monkey sex’ – a word used to describe frequent, reckless and untamed sex is quite innovative.

Negatives: A woman is once again shown to have succumbed to lust and power of an Alpha Male like Nico. Though Bronte initially could resist Nico, her will power could not stand long in front of Nico’s maleness and seducing powers. I somehow felt that the author pressed on the fact that however mentally strong is any woman, one day, she will have to surrender to a man, Lust seems to be the main agenda in this relationship between Nico and Bronte, through which Nico seems to have achieved his goal of acquiring the Dover House, which otherwise would have been impossible with a woman like Bronte.

My rating is 3.75 out of 5

Reckless Night in Rome is book one in the Ludlow Hall series by CC Mackenzie. It is an easy-to-read romance that does keep your interest. I liked the book quite a bit. Now to read the others.
Bronte Ludlow was regretting her blind date with Anthony. He was getting drunk and being a jerk. He had brought her to the restaurant now in Ludlow Hall, her family home, and she did not want to make a scene especially with her brother, Alexander, being the manager. They were at odds already.
Alexander was her older brother and she doted on him. When their parents were killed in an accident, they found out that they were in great debt and Alexander was given Ludlow Hall while Bronte was given the Dower House. Not only that; but they found out that Bronte was only a half sister. Her father was Carl Terlezhi, whoever he was. Alexander took this information really hard as did Bronte. Faced with debts, Alexander sold Ludlow Hall to his friend Nico Ferranti. Nico made Alexander a partner in his new hotel business. Bronte was hurt and angry that he sold the Hall without consulting her. After all, it was part of her heritage. Bronte took her inheritance and opened a wedding cake business, Sweet Sensations. It was doing well and with weddings at Ludlow Hall, it could do really well.
Nico didn’t plan on doing much at Ludlow Hall. Alexander wanted to check out the other resorts so Nico came to take care of it for a month. Luckily Alexander had hired competent crew members he wouldn’t have to do much. Bronte takes out her anger at Alexander on Nico, after all , he had the money. She doesn’t want to have anything to do with him; but he forces her to go to dinner with him. She has a lot on her mind, her fight with Alexander, her “date” with Anthony, her rescue by Nico, selling Ludlow, her parents’ death, her broken engagement, meeting her biological father, and her reaction to Nico. Now, Nico gets a call at dinner and tells her that Alexander was in a car wreck in Rome. This brings back the scene at the site of her parents’ deaths. Nico takes charge and she finds herself in romantic Rome with Nico. Will Alexander be all right? Will Bronte?

I love this book!!! Reckless Nights In Rome is book 1 in the Ludlow series. It has romance, humor, a touch of suspense, a bit of action, some drama and HOT passionate chemistry. I love Bronte's spunk. Who better to handle a certain alpha male by the name of Nico, right? This book kept me well-entertained from start to finish. Highly recommended!!!

This was the first one of your books I read and it won't be the last. I loved it. Nico sounds like just about the sexiest Italian man you would ever want to meet and Bronte was a spitfire. I loved the story and will recommend to friends. It really was a good read

Could have been a 5 stars but hated the heroine

This author is all black and white with heroines. No grey area. It's so annoying. It's either they're very sweet or very furious! So after a nice sweet loving moment, the heroine decides to misinterpret the simplest thing and starts glaring, screaming, hissing and slapping all in one GO....COMPLETELY RUINING the moment. This was constant up till about the last 20% of the book.
This is the third book I've read by this author and the heroine's have been the same.
The hero's are sufficiently arrogant and alpha which I love and they also do a complete 360 once they meet the heroine's. But the way they go on, Bronte and crew, it puts me off and wonder what the hero sees in them.

Not liking the mmc no matter how bad his childhood was - and I’m not sure the goal of the author was to write him so unsympathic 🤷‍♀️

Fmc does what she can with what little she has in the details from the author - which is not much 😄

Read this if you like bad rich men that really are bad and thinks that when he get’s rough it’s her fault.. Thinking things like ‘she could have worn panties you know, and not talked so provocative, then I wouldn’t have assaulted her’ 🛑

Also I have a feeling this story is based on tons of miscommunication which is not my fave thing 😊

Who started as an enemy might just become a lover.

Bronte & Nico are enemies before even meeting each other. Though nico is holding no grudge but Bronte is as nico is taking the most important thing from her, her last memory of her parents.

As the tension between Bronte & Her brother Alexander grows because of the secrets in past, Nico becomes what He wants to be in Bronte's life - A hero.

Love at 1st sight

These two characters will make you laugh and cry. They both say they don't want a commitment or love but who are they kidding? Can they find happiness and love together?

Entertaining , but predictable.

It was entertaining enough to keep me reading until the end. However, the constant cliches and repeated words and phrases like "feeling physically ill" made me wonder many times why I kept in reading it.

Enjoyable!

Gets a little cliche in the last couple chapters, but I really enjoyed this story. Sexy, sweet, and funny in places; I would high recommend. This is book one of a series, but it is a stand alone novel, which is something I highly appreciated!

So good!

Bronte and Nico were absolutely perfect! I really enjoyed getting to know them. I loved how stubborn Bronte was and that Nico never gave up on her. I was so glad they found happiness with one another. 💛

3 I guess

Decent for genre. Character driven although very sexual. Really liked the MCs. Each dealing with tough situations and lack of trust.

Good

Enjoyed this book, I had read the other Ludlow series and loved it, I wanted to read Nicole and Brontes story, it was good but I think it was a little rushed at the end.
