Krahn, born Betina Maynard, is the second daughter of Dors Maynard and Regina Triplett. Krahn learned to read at the age of four, and began making up her own stories when she was only six. In fifth grade she won a silver "Noble Order of Bookworms" pin for her achievements in reading, and the following year she began writing down her stories.

Krane was graduated from high school in Newark, Ohio and received a B.S. in Education (Biological Sciences) at Ohio State University. After college, Krahn taught science in Newark, and studied for a graduate degree at Ohio State in the summers. It was during those summers that she met her future husband, physics graduate student Donald Krahn.

The family moved to Oklahoma, where Krahn finished the work for her Masters of Education in Counseling in 1973. In 1974, she gave birth to her first child, Nathan, with the second son Zebulun arriving in 1978. With two young children, Krahn became a stay-at-home mother for a time, also finding time to volunteer on a community board working to get funding for mental health care in part of Western Oklahoma. Once the funding was secured, Krahn worked as an HR director for a mental health center.

Hooked

Wonderful moving and emotional. I have read a couple of More Than Words books and each one brings romance and an awareness to an issue and the people who survive and volunteer.

Hooked by Betina Krahn is a 90-page story that hooks the reader from page one. The book is part of Harlequin’s More than Words Outreach where famous authors write about real life issues. Betina Krahn recognizes the work of Donna Fischer, the Arizona program coordinator for Casting for Recovery, a national non-profit organization that runs fly-fishing for cancer patients. All that said it is still a romance. Something Krahn does very well.

Stephanie Steele moved to Atlanta to be closer to her family and expand her business. At least, that is what she told herself. Maybe it was more about her boyfriend, make that former boyfriend, Finn Hartley, and his mellow take one day at a time attitude. The man didn’t share Stephanie’s ambition she didn’t see how they could merge lives when their outlook differs so much, but that was before the big C hit, now she had no clue how she’d proceed from here.

Finn Hartley mystified by Stephanie to leave him and move across the country decided to just deal with it. That meant not dealing with it. At first, caring for his beloved sister who battled cancer, only to have it defeat her in the end kept him sane. Then there were his two daughters with their continuous demands and his ex-wife who often jump-started their demands. Well, it all kept him busy, but it didn’t make him feel useful. He began volunteering for Casting for the Cause hoping to make a small part of his life count.

Stephanie spots Finn when she travels back for a wedding. Even though her heart yearns for him, she is unwilling to allow Finn to romance her because she is not the woman he knew before. Finn realizes she is holding something back, and is determined to not let her get away a second time. He is determined to get her hooked.

Hooked really does do that. Hooks and reels you in. Started it at eleven at night and did not put it down until I finished it. Make sure you have plenty of tissues on hand. It works on so many levels. You may also learn a little bit about fly-fishing too.

This book moved me to tears often. As a person who works with cancer patients it hit close to home. As I read the book, I felt as if I were Stephanie. The differences in her public persona and her private persona, the struggles of her heart (of not being whole) of wanting something but not knowing how to obtain it due to insecurities. I think this is a wonderful book for anyone, but also should be given to those who have breast cancer. I love the idea of this Casting for Recovery group, and I have let the social services department of the cancer treatment center I work for know about it so that maybe this group could help some of our patients like they helped Stephanie.

This ebook was free when I downloaded it from Barnes and Noble for my Nook library. This was my introduction to Harlequin's More than Words program where best-selling authoring have written stories inspired by real-life heroines. This book is inspired by Donna Fischer, the Arizona program coordinator for Casting for Recovery, a national nonprofit organization that runs fly-fishing retreats for women who have or have had breast cancer.
Krahn created compelling characters who kept me wondering what might happen next.
I recommend it for all readers.

It's impossible to ignore that this book was written as a tribute to a program created to help breast-cancer survivors to cope with it, while learning together to fly-fish.
After the so-boring and academic introduction, I was impressed by the tone of the book who really rings true, is neither depressing, nor over-optimistic. I really liked both main characters, with their flaws and development over time.

This book hits on issues no women wants to face but many have no choice. It was well written and makes women believe their out bodies is really nothing but a shell. We sometimes forget that what is on the inside is really all that matters. You can be the most beautiful on the outside but your attitude makes one more ugly then anything in this world. Different cancers are issues we all deal with at one time in our life. This is a hard warming book with lots of plus and well worth the read.

This was a touching and inspiring book. I liked the main characters as well as all the rest. I enjoyed reading this book and would read it again. There were emotions, fun, understanding, self-discovery and humor. This was fun and heartfelt and good for a quick read with a upbeat and inspiring mood. Enjoy!

A pretty quick easy read. A topic like cancer can easily turn a good story into a sad,.depressive one. Betina Krahn kept it a good stoey while showing there is life after a devastating diagnosis. It was fairly predictable, but overall.a.good book.

Now this is how a quick read should be! You connect quickly with the main character and the relationship doesn't feel rushed or phoney.

After I finished reading this story, I actually got online to find out more about groups that help people adjust to a 'new' life after/with cancer.

This book really "gets it." All the emotions and fears of breast cancer survivors. Also, I had never heard of casting for recovery. What a great organization!
