The Salamanders Space Marines have long been guided by the wisdom of their lost primarch, laid down in the mysterious Tome of Fire. As a new prophecy unfolds, the Salamanders find themselves tested to the point of destruction – and one of their number will either save them or damn them. This collection of short stories and novellas expands the Tome of Fire trilogy and reveals untold tales of the Salamanders and their foes.

A travesty that left me disgusted till this day. I can't...I just can't touch any Warhammer 40k book after this. If this is how Black Library is degrading into, then I might abandon it altogether. Now, the main characters, Tsu'gan and Dak'ir are pretty enjoyable to read. They have different characters, background and ideologies. The conflict between them is good, though I would like to see it explored more. Both main plot and subplot of almost all the stories here are nonsense and poorly scripted. Action feels very repetitive. Supporting characters are unlikable. "Protean" brings out the worst I could have ever expected from a Space Marine novel. I can't believe the defenders of Mankind would go to such length, risking so much just for something so stupid. The incident was described on Warhammer 40k wiki as a heroic victory of the Salamander over the Tyranids and Night Lords, but what Nick Kyme presents to us is an unholy mess. Overall, if you love Space Marines, I recommend AWAY from this book.
This is an interesting collection of short stories that provides some backstory, depth and continuation to the Tome of Fire trilogy I just finished. The last story, however, was superlative and I now rank the Salamanders as noble, perhaps even more noble, in their protection of human beings as my favorite loyalist Space Marines, the Vlka Fenryka. That was a great short story to end the collection.
Not the best Black Library novel I've read, but not the worst. The Salamanders are a Chapter I'm a bit unfamiliar with, and thus I learned a few things. But the last short story was the best. Emperor's Deliverance showed how the Marines Malevolent don't care for civilian losses and that nobody should f**k with the Salamanders. Tu'Shan' cameo was awesome!
A nice collection of short-stories following the Salamanders. The quality of the stories vary, but fortunately they get better and better. This bodes well for the next trilogy. Recommended for fans of the Tome of Fire Trilogy.
