A marriage in peril story between a workaholic NYC surgeon and his trophy wife heroine. They have been married for seven years and have two children. The heroine leaves him a note and takes the kids because she feels like she is faking her role as is the hero.

It's an interesting premise and I can't say I had a lot of sympathy for the heroine who had two nannies and lots of time to keep up her trophy wife image. Thankfully, she lost some of that brittleness during the scenes in Vermont and started speaking up.

I liked the hero - he was a clueless guy about a lot of things - but he stepped up when the heroine put him on notice. It took them awhile to work through their issues and the life and death emergency with the hero's father put it all in perspective.

A more realistic story than I'm used to reading, but it was an HEA to be believed at the end.

Hero's brother makes an almost comment that they're aware that heroine is a gold digger and he doesn't lose a single tooth? That's negative right there. Hero doesn't even properly defend his wife.

Hero knows the whole breakdown is his fault. He is a workaholic, and he hasn't tried and failed to be a present husband, he never even tried it. Heroine finally gave up faking everything including orgasm (which he couldn't even tell because that's how much attention he pays to her).

He almost laughs at her when she talks about love. His response was some thing along the line "oh you're taking about love, i thought this was serious" and he confirmed in the next sentence he doesn't believe in it, he only said ILY (probably for the first time) at the verge of divorce, because he likes to win.

He is such an arrogant and abusive character, the moment he found a small thing to blame his wife on, which he by the way had no right for, he turned the whole table, and placed the whole blame on her and suddenly she's no longer good enough for him. If they were in their bedroom, he'd have kicked her out of the bedroom physically.
Also, heroine earlier pointed out that he always measure HOW much work he has to put in to win something, if it doesn't seem profitable, he abandons it. That's exactly what he did. He had to suddenly spend a romantic dinner with the wife (one he almost paid for), he had to make effort, he's already having to make conversation and small talk, and grovel, this is so beneath him, and she has pointed out his inadequacy in bedroom. He is never going to cut back hours at work, both his family and wife is 2nd best to his career and job, and heroine is demanding time for that. So let's just illogically blame her for not loving me when we got married, even though that's EXACTLY what i did, and I don't believe in love, but now I'll play the victim and I'll just cut my losses and throw her out of my life.

He asked heroine why she married him, when they TOGETHER made an informed decision that she has no money, or prospect, so he'll marry her and they'll have a partnership. She just didn't realise the partnership will turn out her acting like a trophy wife like an employee. She was the only one with logic here. He wanted to divorce her because she faked being happy for money. She literally explained the whole thing to him the other day. She didn't think of love when they got married, she loved him when the kids were born, hell, she even loved him last week, but not right now, whereas he admitted HE never was IN LOVE with her, or even loved her in that way. And suddenly he has always loved her and SHOWED it to her. in what way? he couldn't even show it in bed, his dick had a 3 minute expiration timeframe! the author lost me at that point. Because it was the BIGGEST lie throughout the whole book, and probably in the MC's relationship.
He probably either wanted to cut her out because it was too much work for him, or cut her down so he has leverage in the marriage if they reconcile.

This guy was worse than alpha heroes. At least you know they're assholes. This one is claiming he cares and loves, and looking for every occasion to find a weakness so the table is turned and he gets the upperhand, and when he couldn't do with the reality, he did that with a superficial reason.

His family has never cared for his wide, yet not only was he unaware of it, when he was made aware of it, he did nothing to protect his wife's honour.

The heroine was an idiot and not very likeable person, but hero is THE worst.

Really surprised at how well I liked this marriage in peril story since I generally try to avoid them. It was very well written and believable. The hero and the heroine were both very sympathetic characters. The heroine did marry for money and security and while in Romanceland that is generally a no no, in the real world it is a fact of life (especially the security bit) and it was interesting to watch such a different story line play out. It has only been in the last 50 years or so that society has turned it's nose up at marrying for security. It was a fairly common and often bitter reality in a world where women were unable to make it alone if they weren't rich. Laws and the physical fact that women are not as strong as men and thus less able to wrest a living from the earth made marriage a necessity. In fact in much of the world today, in places not as advanced, it is still a fact. But enough of my soap box.

Well written, absorbing, with believable actions and emotions.

I think I am in the minority on this one, but for me this book was middle of the road.

I really enjoyed the beginning....and was thinking this was going to be one powerful story that kept me turning those pages. However, somewhere in the middle, it just got dragged down with too many self-recriminations by the heroine. I also found the hero's volatile reaction to her confession was disproportionate to the crime. I lost interest in both characters and became frustrated with his families opinionated view of their marriage. The HEA seemed a bit contrived with the issues not being resolved, other than an "I love you".

Though the book was well written, (no typo's, flowing rhythm, easy to read) I felt this couple still had too many unresolved issues between them to get the HEA.

The characters in this book irritated me, made me angry but at the end of the book I was invested in them because they had done so many things wrong that I didn't know how the author would ever fix them. MJ is a surgeon who loves his work and his life, he has two kids even though because of his work he doesn't get to see him much, a perfect wife who looks good, maintains herself, runs the house, charities, everything is perfect and then he comes home to a letter that his wife of seven years has left him, she can't do it anymore.

In flashbacks we see their first meeting, Alicia, 23 and struggling with debts and wanting to be a model. She was a waitress who met MJ and reeled him in and married him for money and then to live up to it tried to be the perfect trophy wife but she is tired and so angry. She is tired of their half ass lovemaking, of spending time outside than with her kids, of doing everything so that it looks good. When she leaves him she knows MJ would follow, his pride would make him but she is not sure she wants to continue the marriage, it is too tiring and exhausting.

Their marriage had been in trouble from the start because it started on the wrong note, MJ suspected she married him for money but never had the guts to ask her and thought providing her with everything would make things grow between them but it didn't and he never suspected that she faked a lot of things and didn't tell him because they had a bargain. I hated that he called what they had a contract and it sucker punched him when Alicia lets loose and tells him that she felt she was his employee and had to please him or when she told him she faked orgasms with him. They never communicated too busy with their lives and the hero had an ego and he was clueless and never knew things were so wrong because she never told him, she never told him about her past, her mother, nothing and he didn't ask. He didn't even knew she cooked and the fault of their marriage lay with both of them. At one point Alicia realizes she loves him and that is why there is so much anger in her. I disliked Alicia at times but I also pitied her because she remained such an outsider in MJ's family and the fault lay at her door and her fake mask.

MJ thought giving her things would make her love him at one point says of course he loved her, he showed it in a thousand ways by giving her things. For most of the book I wasn't sure they would make it, Alicia had a habit of putting on her mask, bottling things in. I did like that they get to know each other slowly even if it is with foolish game like three things but with their hectic lives especially the hero's I am not sure how well they would balance things.

They did get a chance to be a family with kids when she left but how long would that last? At the end of the book I did feel these two brought out long festering issues in the open and may make it, MJ promised to carve time out for them and these two stopped burying issues and the epilogue does show them happy, more secure because now things were out in the open, no secrets. I am rating this book higher because of the different path it took, with the stories and its characters, I truly applaud the author for that because I have never read a book like this.

Very good book. This one was unusual, as the main characters have been married for seven years already. Although she hadn't been in love with MJ when they married, she has grown to love him very much. She has been the perfect wife, supporting him, raising his children, doing everything she thought he wanted. But she spends most of her time alone since he works very long hours, and she has gotten tired of it. So she packs up the kids and leaves New York for Vermont. MJ is stunned, as he didn't realize that she was unhappy - she had never said anything. He follows her to Vermont with the intention of bringing her back. But she puts her foot down and he consents to trying to work things out. Over the next few weeks as they spend time together they work at getting to know each other and their expectations. There are many issues to work out and both of them realize that they each had a part in their problems. When a crisis brings them together, they realize that they truly love each other and are able to come together stronger than ever. I enjoyed this book and its different point of view. It showed that communication is very important, and showing appreciation for one's spouse is critical. I liked the way that MJ was determined to work things out, and found his frequent cluelessness appealing.

Somewhat angsty, emotional marriage in trouble story.
No Ow or om drama.
No one’s cheating or cheated.

The h manipulated the H into marrying her, because she’s a gold digger and was desperate for money.
Seven years later, she’s tired of being a trophy wife.
So one day, she packs up and takes her kids away from the H demanding a divorce.
She bored being a rich stay at home wife, and he’s never home being a famous doctor saving lives and all.🙄
She feels like there is no love in their marriage blah blah..they talk and HEA.

I really couldn’t sympathize with a heroine/wife like this.
If this family didn’t have kids, I would’ve been happier if he had kicked her out.
Let her go back to being a poor waitress at a diner where he found her at.

I absolutely loved this book. The story was so well-written and moving. I can see why this book is a RITA finalist. As a wife of many years, I could relate to the heroine's internal conflict and at the same time feel so strongly for the hero's point of view. I cried when they finally found their way back to each other. In fact, I am a bit teary as I recall the depth of that moment in the book.

I totally loved this book ! It was really a fabulous read that had me glued to my seat and I read this one in one sitting ! The story of MJ and Alicia and their two beautiful children had me inspired and entranced. MJ recons he has it all a beautiful wife, two gorgeous kids,a great job and that life could not be better.

That is until his world comes crashing down with such a force that it knocks the wind in his sails. He and Alica had a love that is pure and passionate which you will agree is everything every woman dreams of. So what could possibly tear them apart, you might ask?

The author took a couple each set as good, strong characters and mixed in the perfect amount of drama to bring forth a good old fashioned story of love conquers all if that love is strong enough. The emotion packed into the plot by the author had me really emotionally connected to all characters involved,I felt the pain they experienced and felt the joy when the author very talently takes the reader back to the past,so vividly that I felt like I was on a emotional roller coaster.

The book had depth, passion and reminded me that out there are couples that each have their own set of problems to deal with.

Whether your a first time Lilian Darcy fan or a returning reader you will be pleasantly surprised at just how powerful her writing can be.

If there is anything I like better than a reunion romance it is a marriage in trouble when it's well done.
This is the third in the McKinley Medics series. MJ and Alicia have been married for seven years but their rushed Vegas wedding left both of them uncertain about the other's real feelings.

Now it's crunch time and the alienation brought on by MJ's heavy surgical work load and Alicia's desperate need to be the perfect wife has led to her decision to leave the marriage.

This is where the story picks up, with Alicia and the two children moving to a rural town where MJ's brother Andy and his fiancee Claudia have property.

This is an emotional read about two people who have essentially been living their marriage on the surface and in Alicia's case, faking it at times to keep up the perfect facade.

But underneath are lots of feelings. Anger, resentment, fear and of course love. Whether they can work through it and make something of their marriage seems almost impossible at times. Pride and ego take a severe battering in MJ's case and Alicia's tragic childhood, kept secret from MJ, has it's own role.

I really enjoyed this. The interactions with the family weren't too intrusive and if I'd read the first two in the series I'm sure I would have enjoyed the catchup with the siblings even more.

I really enjoy marriage in peril stories and this one stood out. It felt real. I felt for both the hero and heroine and truly believe in their HEA. This is the first book I have read by this author and will be looking forward to reading more.

4.5 stars. Books like this are why I still read Harlequin romance. Lillian Darcy is one of those writers who can engage your emotions, even in a shorter book. I actually cried while reading this.

A surprise

I really liked this one. An estranged marriage trying to work itself out. The workaholic hero is blithely unaware of the problems in his marriage. The heroine has hurts and insecurities of her own. She was poor and in a bad place when she first met the hero and her feelings for him are mixed up with her insecurities with and how their marriage came about and of her place within the family. The hero has his own area of insecurity that he doesn’t want to explore, his fear that she married him for his money. Both the hero and the heroine’s fears are exacerbated by the fact that his family seems pretty certain that she married him for money.

I thought the story was handled sensitively, and with some equality of whose problems created which problems. It’s a struggling marriage with no hint of infidelity on either side. What they need is more communication and honesty, and it was enjoyable to read both of their journey back together, and better than the firs time.

Notes for me

MJ and Alicia. He’s a surgeon and she takes care of their 2 kids and home.

She feels ignored so takes kids and goes to cabin. He follows.

They met when she was trying to get into acting. She was a waitress with no family and no money. She admits she married him for money and security.

This story about MJ and Alicia, they already married for seven years and have two beautiful kids. The story began with Alicia ask divorce from MJ because MJ never been there. The story flashback to seven years earlier, they married for all wrong reason, Alicia only want financial security and MJ only want the wife and kids based on his agenda.
MJ is good doctor but a lot of his time is spend in Hospital, when he try to fix his marriage he try to delegate some work. Alicia is mature than when she struggle in debt seven years before, now she can spoke her opinion not faking anymore and not be afraid that MJ is not like it.
I love how they try to fix they married with three little question to know each other better and MJ realized that Alicia not faking anymore when he see Alicia cry when she not pregnant, and that when he realized the real factor why he married Alicia

Quaint

A sweet second chance story. Where life gets busy, communication lags, feelings are hurt, Vows are questioned, and thoughts of would we better off? Is love still there or is it only that which is familiar?

In the end feelings are questioned, secrets told and the couple have to decide if the relationship is salvageable or is it time to move on.

With anger, sorrow soul searching, drama and angst and an unexpected event, that answers their questions and segues into their HEA and short epilogue.

Author is very good with reflecting likely feelings unlike in cliche romance books. I especially enjoyed realistic representation of the heroine`s feelings at the beginning of their relationship.
I`d like to feel the love H\h felt for each other a little bit more.

Really liked how it was a marriage that was trying to find love again, rather than a traditional love story setting :)
