An ancient ruin holds its secrets in a death grip in this exciting new Dragonlance(R) trilogy!
The dwarven realms of Krynn are slumbering, locked in mountain fastness, removed and aloof from the affairs of the world. But the world has a way of finding someone when it needs them. A wealthy aristocratic dwarf from Kayolin is forced to flee his home. A gully dwarf from Thorbardin is lucky to escape his own city with his life. And a brilliant and impetuous descendant of the once-mighty Hylar wonders what failures have steered her people onto a path of self-destruction. Can she change that course before it's too late? Together, these three heroes hold the future of dwarvenkind, and all Krynn, in their hands.

This book is part of the Dragonlance universe and is the first book of a trilogy. In this one we visit dwarfs and their various clans. These clans are constantly fighting each other. Finally, there is a priestess who spreads her god's words to put an end to this fighting.
This book was a little slow to start. There have been several books in this universe that have dealt with the dwarfs and their fighting each other. It seemed like that we have already dealt with this matter as the author showed each clan hating each other. This book started to pick up when the author concentrated on just two clans and Gretchen, the priestess, preaching of peace. Up to this point no character stood out and I was not interested. That all changed with just the two clans and I became interested in this book. The final battle was well done as per usual from this author as he does write some terrific battle scenes. There was a nice little twist also that the reader is given hints and can figure out.
The first half of this book was setting up the scene and it wasn't the most exciting. I did enjoy the second half and it did entice me enough that I am looking forward to the second book of this trilogy.
The storylines for Dragonlance as awhole are hard to catch up too I mainly have read the Weis/Hickman books so I have a vague background on current events. But this book was my attempt to get caught up still have questions I need answered.
Douglas Niles has done it again! I just finished reading the first book in the Dwarf Home trilogy, The Secret of Pax Tharkas. I would highly recommend reading The Last Thane (Chaos War series) and Dark Thane (Age of Mortals series) before this one as there are many related characters and connections. Honestly, before reading this, I wondered if the bickering and warfare between the different dwarven clans might become repetitive at this point, but I was wrong. This book introduced plenty of unique elements to this adventure. It’s set following the War of Souls and the expulsion of Tarn Bellowgranite and his followers from Thorbardin. I liked getting to see a hint of life in Kayolin as well as more of the hill dwarf communities. And the gully dwarf character did not annoy me! Maybe that’s because he was an unusually thoughtful gully dwarf. Anyway, I look forward to the next book in the series.
Didnt finish this book. The idea was good but the author was trying to hard and that made it impossible to finish He also carried on to much when describing anything
