The destruction of the enemy weapon in western France has been a great morale booster. Majors Taylor and Shondra have been gaining a reputation as The Immortals. The war has raged for two months, and what is left of the battalion is dug in at Ramstein Air Base in southwestern Germany. The Rytek Exoskeleton Suit has proven to be a godsend. The armor and anti-material weapon has leveled the playing field to some degree. Intelligence has reported that soldiers are being held behind enemy lines. For what purpose is unknown but the desire to rescue them is undeniable. Command Officers will not approve the rescue mission. Will Major Taylor once again disobey orders to save his comrades? Ramstein is about to be overrun. Soldiers are commanded to fall back to prepared positions in depth. Professor Ryder comes through again to provide his latest equipment to his favorite testing soldiers. Once again with decent equipment, Majors Shondra and Taylor may have a chance at stopping the enemy assault. Lastly, if Majors Taylor and Shondra have not done enough already, the Command Brass comes up with one more idea that may be a game-changer. This volume contains plenty of action and excitement. As with my previous experience Thomas creates a great camaraderie and experience with his writing, but there is always a niggle i find.
In this case it's the amount of time we spend on incarceration after disobeying orders and making a valiant rescue. It gets quite political with the upper brass and so this may also spoil this otherwise good story for others as well.
Narration was top notch so can't fault the voices although a few more spx would have helped.

These books are to sci-fi what Dan Brown is to crime fiction - a storyline that almost runs away with you it progresses that quickly, yet at the same time the writing is almost amateurish in style, almost as if the author vomited their thoughts onto the page.

That said, I've found the books I've read so far in this series to be quite enjoyable and good escapist stuff, and if you can suspend your disbelief that a race that can cross the stars to conquer planets doesn't seem to have either the battle-plans or technology to carry out their goals when they arrive, it's good boys-own stuff that entertains from cover to cover!

Writing and prose is stilted and somewhat juvenile. Plot is interesting, but I found it pretty unrealistic how suddenly the tides of war changed just because of some fancy equipment. The generals have become cardboard and are obviously just there to be the "human" villains. Not very realistic behavior, in my opinion. The grammar errors were noticeable and quite jarring at times, but I can get past that if the writing is solid. This isn't. Still, the story is a semi-enjoyable diversion and appeals the side of me that wants to read about heroes and glory.

So having read three of these books in quick concession I can say that the story is improving as the books continue, however this is first and foremost a military novel, focused on lives of marines against a still powerful force.

My earlier squabbles about spelling and grammar have been brought down a notch, a few mistakes hear and there but far fewer than previous books by Nick.

The story continues on past this book, carrying you onto more fighting and bloodshed. A decent if not easy to ready novel that is part of an interesting little series.

Another good fast read with lots of combat. Plenty of "magic" to help the poor humans against the invaders. I enjoyed the read, although the story left me wanting for something that I cannot quantify.
