Stardust Crusaders #5

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Vol. 5

Rate this book
Violent, strange saga spanning four continents and four generations. Araki's ideas are stretched increasingly thin, but there is still plenty of action and new concepts to sustain the interest of demanding Shounen Jump readers. Each part of Jojo can be read more or less independently, and has its own atmosphere and storytelling/art style.

¡A no colgarla!

I liked it!
I guess, the "several members of people with superpowers traveling together" does it for me.
Every time they're in a new town or in a new situation, I have NO idea what's gonna happen, and it's fun to find out about new "stand" power.
The characters Hol-Horse, Polnareff, and Joseph Joestar (I don't know if that's the right spelling) add fun scenes too.
I think the story would be way too serious with a too-serious Jotaro as a sole protagonist, who never smiles, and just always too serious and smart... just like parts 1-2 were.

But I still don't like the fact that that little girl (we still don't know her name) is with them for some reason, and swoons over Jotaro from time to time. (WHY is she in this story??)
He's too old for her and not a good man, to be honest. (This JoJo gives me the Clint Eastwood vibes...)

3 estrellas.

Should Jotaro and his companions find a way to survive their fight against the Wheel of Fortune Stand user, greater dangers await amidst a foggy town, where Enya seeks revenge on Polnareff for the death of her son, wielding a Stand that as threatening as her voracious motherly rage! Araki delivers a tense entry both atmospheric and zany.

You know, the way Dio's minions have shifted is kind of fitting. In the 1800's we had vampires, zombies, and ghouls. Bram Stoker kind of stuff. Classic horror. But 100 years later, the style has changed. Now we get possessed dolls, haunted towns, and evil growths. The kind of stuff that can get a scare from contemporary audiences. And Stardust Crusaders functions as a blend of the previous 2 parts. We've still got the monsters, ridiculously muscular physiques, and fashionable characters. But now they have the cerebral edge and flamboyant charm of Battle Tendency. And those elements are what give familiar monster concepts a wholly unique identity when they pop up in Jojo.

Anyway, Justice was a fun and intimidating stand that mostly covered my dislike for his user. He feels like a major mid-point boss with how grand the scale of his powers are and how deadly a single hit can be. But even then, we don't lose sight of the light hearted elements. Polnareff unknowningly rubbing salt in momma Geil's wounds is hilarious. And I find it endlessly amusing how hung up he is about foreign toilets, yet so often ends up being attacked in the bathroom. This guy is my new favorite.

Jotaro is in top form as well. His stoicism constantly keeps you guessing as to what he's thinking. More often than not, we are given insight into the thoughts of the baddies being outsmarted. This really drives home how clever Jotaro is, since we only get the results of his planning, rather than following along his thought process. That said, our suspension of disbelief isn't tested in the same way it wasby Joseph's tricks. This means that, more often than not, we get the punchy "oh shit son" moments of Jotaro outsmarting his foes all at one- without the bad aftertaste some of Joseph's schemes had. Usually. Star Platinum inhaling a whole stand is kind of goofy and weird, but I feel like it's a solution most people might consider if they thought about it for long enough. He's also a very good boy who will let people walk on him to protect his grandpa.

And to top it off, the whole Justice mini-arc ends with the reveal that they were in a graveyard the whole time. It's a small thing, but I really like this touch, rather than the revelation that they were in an empty field or an abandoned town. Something about the graveyard just feels right.

As usual, Joseph is a highlight. The brashness of his youth has turned into a goofy sort of worldliness. His wisdom is typically undercut by something backfiring and making him look like a dope. I sure how accurate this comparison is, but the dad from National Lampoon or Tim Allen from home improvement popped in my head while I was describing Joseph just now. Like, it's really cool that he's worldly enough to know that haggling is the norm in this region. But then he ends up getting ripped off anyway. I'm probably overthinking this. I just really love Joseph, guys. Leave me alone.
