L'era del flagello

Prima della Guerra degli Anni Luce, che ha sconvolto il mondo e ha spazzato via dalla Terra gran parte della popolazione, un famoso ricercatore biotecnologico conduce esperimenti su un misterioso virus, capace di alterare geneticamente le cellule umane e renderle in grado di sintetizzare la luce. Il virus rende le persone in grado di alimentarsi standosene semplicemente ferme sotto la luce del sole, ma la sua diffusione potrebbe portare a sconvolgimenti sociali enormi. Scoppia però la Guerra, e di quell'esperimento si perde ogni traccia. Si sa solamente che lo scienziato è stato ucciso dagli agenti di un oscuro paese dell'ex Unione Sovietica. A secoli di distanza un altro scienziato, il professor Davout, decide di mettersi sulle sue tracce...

Walter Jon Williams has published twenty novels and short fiction collections. Most are science fiction or fantasy -Hardwired, Voice of the Whirlwind, Aristoi, Metropolitan, City on Fire to name just a few - a few are historical adventures, and the most recent, The Rift, is a disaster novel in which "I just basically pound a part of the planet down to bedrock." And that's just the opening chapters. Walter holds a fourth-degree black belt in Kenpo Karate, and also enjoys sailing and scuba diving. He lives in New Mexico with his wife, Kathy Hedges.

In the far future a woman is hired to research three missing weeks in the life of a foundational thinker whose ideas shaped the world. Closer to the presnt, the same thinker is on the run with a complete stranger who is carrying a biomedical thingummy she hopes will change the world. It's pretty neat, the Hitchcockian adventure dovetailing into the utterly transformed future, the utopian future slowly revealing at least one small nasty worm in the apple.

Decisamente una bella idea rovinata da un po' troppe distrazioni.
La storia di un ritrovato biologico in grado di sconfiggere per sempre la fame nel mondo non serve a dare veramente la pace agli uomini in quanto i cattivi sentimenti come odio e gelosia sono pi�� forti di qualsiasi necessit�� corporale.
Il succo del libro penso si possa leggere nella descrizione sopra.
Nel complesso un bel lavoro ma non un capolavoro

Un testo con ottimi spunti. Peccato che la parte SF sia a mio giudizio poco approfondita. Comunque una prosa notevole ed un autore sempre di alto livello.
