While visiting Stephanie's grandmother, Nana, the Sleepover Friends plan to participate in the contests at the big local festival with Nana's neighbors, Mindy Sue and the Tyler twins, but their plans are upset by Patti's conflict with Mindy Sue

I love when these series go on vacation. It's fun to see a new location and new people and I vaguely remember this one. The girls are headed to Crab Island for four days, off the coast of Maine. Stephanie's Nana and her new husband have a place there which begs the question how many places does she live? Doesn't her new husband have a place at that ranch they went to? Can't the girls go visit one of their grandparents? Why is it always Nana they go to? Poor Nana dealing with four girls all the time.
Anyway Crab Island so named because its in the shape of a crab has a fair or contest or something going on while the girls are there fir the prize of a sunfish sailboat. They finally meet the Tyler Twins who Stephanie has been salivating over until she meets them, then the girls hate them because ew boys. There's also another girl Mindy Sue who visits the island on the weekends and seems friendly.
Nana has a place on the point which means ocean on three sides which sounds both beautiful and alarming when its stormy season.
Anyway the girls start up a competition with the Tyler twins despite the fact they have no use for a sailboat and it seems kind of a dick move really. The kite contest ends in disaster for both of them and they both view revenge in the sandcastle building. As this is going on Patti keeps vanishing and the others are getting annoyed with her. At first she says its bird watching until they find out the bird she's looking for is not in season and she wouldn't have seen it. After a big storm washes out the sandcastles on the beach, which I don't understand at all, why have building one day and judging the next? I mean there was a huge storm ripping through that destroyed them. Build in the morning and judge in the afternoon to avoid all that. Anyway Patti and the others decide to all work together, the reason for her frequent disappearances becomes known and everything works out.
As I said I love when 80s and 90s books leave their usual settings it shakes things up and is fun to see the author build a new world for the characters to engage in and with. These books always read a bit like an old sitcom which is why I'm surprised more of them haven't been adapted for TV. Of course this wasn't as popular as the BSC or SVH which did get series. I can't wait to start the next book to find out why Lauren's parents thought moving was a good idea.

I almost want to say this was a typical Sleepover Friends book, except that the girls are in Maine, visiting Stephanie's Nana. Whenever the girls go anywhere cool, it seems to be because of Nana. (See: The City, The Lost Valley Dude Ranch in Arizona...) But also, there's no mention of sleepover shenanigans! There's no snacking in the night, no truth or dare, no Dr. Pepper. But there IS the girls teaming up together to best some obnoxious boys, haha. One thing though,

OMG, this cover makes me want to bust out laughing. The title is "Where's Patti?" and looking at the cover I just want to yell, "Right behind you, stupid!"

Patti, Laurem, Kate, and Patti ane visiting Stephanie’s grandmother on Crab Island. Patti is engrossed in a book about birds her gradfather gave her. They land are greeted by Nana. The first thing Stephanie notices is its cold. Dan is watching the races and that’s the direction they head in. (After Ptti gets over her coughing fit). The whole village will be there watching the races. There’s a castle and kite flying contest on Sunday. Dan ordered them a kite. Stephanie wants to know if the Tylers will be there (twin boys) and Nana says yes. They have a silver kite. There’s a advertisement they pass that talks about a dance and a clambake. Stephanie is interested in the dance. Lauren the clambake. They watch the race for a while. It’s Dan’s first race and Nana cheers him on. After the race, they ‘d introduced to Watson (Dan’s friend) and two boys (the Tyler twins). John is one and Fred is the other. They have two much entry and the Sleepover Friends aren’t impressed. The twins tell them the first prize is the Sunfish for the sailing contest. They brag that they are going to contest. Hauren says they’re in the contest too and Fred says people not living on the island shouldn’t be allowed to enter the contest. They then meet Mindy Sue. When they look around Patti is gone.
They meet Robert Tyler and he’s gorgeous! They wonder how he’s in the same family. Patti went back to the car because she thought she saw one of the birds in her book. They. Dam. Amd Mama jead fpr tjoer jpise for lunch. They have a “gingerbread” house and are given the room in the attic. Nana shows them where Mindy and the Tyler family live. The see the twins practicing and the twins see them and give the the “V” sign.
The contest is based on who can fly the kite the highest. Lauren is given the task since she’s the strongest. They have a red, myler, box-kite. Their kite gets to close to the Tylers and they tangle. The twins are furious! The kites fall into the water. The twins look like they are about to explode. The men says they can try again next year. He introduces imself as Howard Fenton. He says the girls will get the trophy for largest kite. The twins warn them they better stay out of their way. Mindy Sue tells them don’t feel bad about the twins. They’re just sore losers. There aren’t that many people on the island so they’re use to winning. Patti sneaks off again and pretends she’s looking at the book.
Stephanie asks Patti where she was when they were having trouble with the kite. Patti says sand got in her eyes and she sneak off behind a boulder. Then she saw a pestral. Stephanie cuts her off and doesn’t speak to her the rest of the night. Lauren and Kate tell Stephanie she’s being too hard on Patti. She says the thinks she cares more about her dumb birds than them She says she just wants her to be honest and Lauren can’t help but admit she is being weird. . Lauren wakes up after a weird dream about the twins making her walk the plank of the Jolly Roger,and sees Patti looking out the window at the Tyler’s house.Lauren doesn’t call out to her and lets her just come back to sleep when she’s ready figuring she feels bad about sneaking off.
The next morning, Dan gives them instructions how to make the best castle. They find the best tools to sculpt with and then head to the beach. The Tyler twins are already there working. They decide to make a castle on an island. It’ll have a drawbridge and it’s own lake. Not long into it Patti walks off again and goes behind a houlder next to where the Tylers are.Mindy and Jane come up to them and say they saw someone walk off. They tell them it’s Patti and they say they never meet her. Stephanie says they probably never will because she’s too busy looking for Pestrals. Jane says she knows something about birds from her mother and no way she could be doing that because it’s the wrong season for PEstrals.
Dan tells the Sleepover Friends he had to take Patti home because of a headache. When they get home Nana says not to disturb her. They all wonder if Patti will be going with them to the dance, and she does. But as soon as they get inside and say they see Mindy, she disappears. They all figure out she headed to the car and they tell her they know what’s bothering her. It’s the Tyler twins. But she says it’s Mindy. She knows her from the third grade. It was the worst year of her life and Mindy Sue was the cause of it. Patti tells them about all the names Mindy called he (too skinny too tall). They all say it sounds like she was just jealous, but people change. They go back inside but after a while Patti disappears again and Nana says they should head home. Mindy invites them all to breakfast at her house the next morning.
Stephanie says they’ll have to think of an excuse, That night a strom hits and the next morning they find out that it destroyed all the sand castles. They decide to go to the beach anyway. They see Mindy but Patti doesn’t run this time. She stands her ground and tells Mindy she knows her from the third grade. Immediately Mind admits she was jealous and this seems to clear the air between them. They all decide to work together with Mindy and Jane and the Tyler twins on one castle and decide the theme should be a stand castle in space. They then win first pirze. Thw twins say they’ll send the Sleepover Friends the trophy and they’ll get to keep the boat.
My Thoughts
It was really nice what the Sleepover Friends did for the Tyler twins. They certainly didn’t *have* to give them the Sunfish. And Patti is a good one because I don’t know if I could have forgiven Mindy that quickly just because she said she was jealous. I might have given her a little bit harder a time. “You do know you made my third grade year hell.” I would have gotten *some* kind of apology. Being *jealous* isn’t a good excuse.

I loved seeing the girls in a new setting, in Maine. Nana’s house with the finished attic for them was so cool. The beach contests to win the the sailboat were cute.
I didn’t love the Patti stuff. I understand this is a fifth grader we’re talking about, but she doesn’t seem to have any confidence at all, or much trust in her friends.
