I read this in the context of a class on fairy tales, and it was a very useful tool in that respect to examine how we might interpret a tale in a dream-like way. The fairy tales surprisingly quite easily, and often, fell open to that sort of analysis. This book works well as a simple primer to some of the ways to look at elements in a dream - certainly not as some sort of hokey "dream dictionary" which explains every image out of context.
nice introduction into the analysis of dream but too clinical and theoretical for my liking i can see how this can be used for a guding tool (a study book) for people who actually study psychoanalysis and have knowledge on the matter (and probably it was written for them), but for me as a mere reader and a complete beginner in the jungian practice it was hard to fully comprehend and it lacked character to be enjoyed as a read
if you are considering buying this to help you analyze your own dreams, this is not the book for that
A clear, concise work on the Jungian interpretation of dreams. Recommended. For a detailed review, please visit my blog: http://tesatorul.blogspot.ro/2013/11/....
this was for analysts, really, so it went pretty deep into jungian terminology, but it was helpful to me as another way to interpret dreams. honestly, I don't think it matters how you interpret dreams, just working with them is helpful.
How do you and I learn the humility to listen to our own souls as they speak each night in dreams?
How can we live into our depths and live our outer lives more fully, so that wisdom and knowledge that guides us like the words of the person dearest to us grows out of us like a seed from the earth?
I believe that we have to return to the small things of our souls, like dreams, that we tend to see as pitiful. We have to see them as being larger than us, and supremely meaningful.
This is what James A. Hall seeks to do in this book, and I think he does an admirable job of it.
I've done an in-depth review and amplification of this book in 3 parts.
James Hall's book is an interesting expression of the Jungian foundation of holding the tension of the opposites. Jungian Dream Interpretation is both a very practical book on dream interpretation as well as presenting a thorough theoretical foundation. Personally, I came away with a clearer understanding of Self being the organizing core of the unconscious and ego being the organizing principle of our conscious psyche. I also more clearly understood the dream ego and the waking ego. Detail, but only for those who have the interest.
Even as a individual who would call themselves (basically) a layman, It is apparent that the author approached this subject with a fair deal of caution and respect, resulting in a highly informative and concise read. Each topic was evaluated on with a fair deal of detail without becoming too lost in those details, and worked through a number of interesting points well.
Highly recommend as a starting point to dream interpretation or to Jungian Psychology in general.
Rounded up from 3.5 stars. This a classic introduction to Jungian dream analysis and there’s a lot of good content here, particularly in its basic definition of terms. Once he moved away from this basic framework, however, the book felt a little unfocused. Additionally, the book is showing its age in terms of certain cultural conversations and understandings of mental health. There are better, more recent, introductions out there.
This book is very good. I have seen it criticized by a reviewer for talking too much about psychology, as, "they didn't like psychology." For those willing to learn and not just have everything spoon fed to them, this book is clear, concise and invaluable. I am reading it for the second time in a year, as I write this review.
In my honest opinion, it went too deep in Jungian terminology. Writing was too abstract for it to call itself a "handbook". Other than that, it did give a few good distinct examples of symbolic interpretation of specific dream patterns.
It was a great companion to an elective course I was taking in school that required keeping a dream journal and analyzing them. I was up to 18 dreams in a month (I dream every.single.day, and they are very vivid and entertaining) and was just slacking off on the analysis part. This book definitely helped me break down my dreams into symbols, themes, and feelings..which is first stage of Jungian dream analysis. Then I had to make associations between symbols and personal, cultural, and universal (collective unconscious in Jungian Psychology) motifs. Beware though- this book is very dense with info..it took me forever to go through it.
For all psychology students out there this is a helpful handbook, also Jungian enthusiasts will find a lot of interesting stuff yet it can be a slow read since the language used is technical and occasionally arduous.
Beautifully written. Explanations of symbols such as the Soul and Self in dreaming are very accessible. He gives a special touch to Jungian or depth psychology.
A fair introduction to Jungian concepts such as the Ego, persona, the Self, anima/animus, and the Shadow and how they all play a role in how we communicate with our Unconscious through our dreams.
