M.D. Grimm has wanted to write stories since second grade (kind of young to make life decisions, but whatever) and nothing has changed since then (well, plenty of things actually, but not that!).

Thankfully, she has indulgent parents who let her dream, but also made sure she understood she’d need a steady job to pay the bills (they never let her forget it!). After graduating from the University of Oregon and majoring in English, (let’s be honest: useless degree, what else was she going to do with it?) she started on her writing career and couldn’t be happier.

Working by day and writing by night (or any spare time she can carve out), she enjoys embarking on romantic quests and daring adventures (living vicariously, you could say) and creating characters that always triumph against the villain, (or else what’s the point?) finding their soul mate in the process.

Although at the beginning, this sentence makes me scratch my head and goes HUH?

"considering that Ryan’s mother had been an actual cow and his father had been in bull form during his conception

I find this story quite cute (though, still, his mother is an actual cow?!?!). There aren't many shifters outside lupine and feline family in stories, so having a bull-shifter as one main characters is interesting. I think the relationship between Caleb (the human) and Ryan is sweet, without being too much. I enjoy the transformation from friendship to lovers. Add thrills approaching the end, with the threat from a shifter-hater that plans to kill shifters.

For those who don't like flashbacks, this story starts at present time, then chapter 3 and 4 are flashbacks, then back to present time. At first, I'm a bit thrown with the flow, but then the events written in those flashback chapters give nuance and insight on Caleb and Ryan's friendship.

I have a question in my mind though, how can Ryan is human form ages differently from Ryan when he's in bull form?!? I assume Ryan is in 20s in human age, but when he shifts into bull, he's supposed to be only 8 years old???

I really liked book 2 of the Shifter Chronicles. Read for free on Scribd.

Caleb is a young cowboy who’s spent all his life working with bulls and bullriding. Ryan is a bull shifter. They meet when Caleb’s mom buys Ryan. The bull shifter prefers life as an animal. It’s easier that way. So for a couple of years Caleb thinks he’s talking to a dumb animal when he brings all his hopes, dreams and problems to Ryan. Eventually Ryan decides to reveal himself to Caleb and the two become fast friends. They both want more, but for the longest time can’t seem to tell each other. When they finally do Ryan is kidnapped by a crazy man who wants to expose the shifters.
Agent Poe from the Agency is back to lend a hand rescuing Ryan. And they live happily ever after.
So sweet. Lovely little story. This is the first bull shifter story I’ve ever read and I’m keen to read more if I can find any.

Questo libro no... c'è...

5 stelle. Sono MOLTO interessata a questa serie! Troppo interessante mutaformi "strani" come Ryan. Mai letto un mutaforme toro!

Notes:

If they're born animals and don't shift until puberty then they're animals throughout childhood but if mother gives birth while human it's the opposite?

Why didn't Caleb ask his mother how she knew Ryan was a shifter?

How did Ryan know how to talk and have a name if his dad only made sure he'd survive and they shift at puberty?

I don't get the age thing. Why does Caleb still say Ryan is 8 years old? Even if animals mature faster, his human half would still need that aging time. Animals don't because their brains aren't as complex.

Portrayal of Richard too over the top and simplistic.

Chloroform is way too dangerous to use unless you don't care about the person you're using it on.

You can't just squeeze the pus out if the wound is that big. People who have abscesses have to stay in the hospital to have it drained over time.

It wouldn't take weeks to heal once it's been sewn up. It's not like they took an organ out. Stitches come out in a week or two.

Peril is pretty good but I wanted to know what was going through Ryan's head more. I wanted to hear more anger and possession from Caleb.

The ultra animalness of the story, the enormous dichotomy between shifting bull and shifting human was just too weird. I never connected with the story. I didn't feel it was really poorly written like last time so I will read further in the series. But I didn't really enjoy this one.

I enjoyed the first book in 'The Shifter Chronicles' series by M.D. Grimm so much that I had to jump right into book two. I was intrigued by the concept of a bull shifter as I don't recall having read about one before. Not to mention, Ryan is a bull shifter who competes in the Professional Bull Riding tournaments. Caleb is his best friend and these two have a lot of misconceptions to work out.

Ryan is unique, even for a shifter. His father was a bull shifter who had sex with a cow, and Ryan was born. Apparently it's very unusual for a shifter to be able to breed with an animal. Ryan's dad stayed around long enough to teach him how to shift, and how to stay off the humans’ radar, and then he left him. Ryan was determined he was going to remain a bull his whole life until he met Caleb and felt a need for a human connection. Of course, Caleb has no idea what Ryan is until Ryan had been at their farm for two years. Caleb teaches Ryan how to be human while falling in love with him. Ryan has always loved Caleb but was afraid of losing him if Caleb knew.

The moment the young, bull Whirlwind arrived at Caleb’s mother’s ranch, Caleb immediately has a surprising connection with him. Not understanding why he would bond with an animal, Caleb finds himself becoming more and more drawn to the prize bull. Since Whirlwind is being trained to become a star in the bull-riding rodeo circuit, they spend a lot of time together, and Caleb finds himself telling Whirlwind things he’s never told another soul. One day, when Whirlwind shifts into a young man named, Ryan, in front of Caleb’s eyes, he’s confused but intrigued by the bull shape-shifter. Soon, with Caleb’s guidance Ryan starts becoming more comfortable with his human counterpart, and Whirlwind becomes the champion bull he was destined to become.

As time goes by, both Ryan and Caleb become more attached and attracted to each other. When they finally admit to these feelings, both are unprepared for the intense emotions they have for one another. But, there are people who believe that all shape-shifters should be eliminated, so when Ryan is kidnapped, Caleb must enlist help from ‘The Agency’ who are people who do whatever it takes to save and protect the shape-shifters. Will Caleb and an agent from the Agency be able to save Ryan from his kidnapper?

I really liked this book a lot. To my knowledge, I’ve never read a book with a bull shape-shifter before, and I thought the storyline and both heroes were unique, and this made Love is a Whirlwind a fresh and interesting read. I liked Caleb’s determination to save Ryan and to make him become part of his human life. I thought both Caleb and Ryan had really good chemistry together and the love scenes they had together was very gratifying and sizzling hot!

Ryan (Whirlwind) is also a very interesting character. In many ways he’s innocent and naïve about living as a human, which doesn’t always go along with what he’s lived and learned as living as a bull. I liked the camaraderie between Ryan and Caleb, and it was very apparent throughout the book that these two men not only loved each other, but they liked and respected each other as well.

There isn’t a lot of angst in this book, but it still had some interesting twists and turns throughout the storyline. Love is a Whirlwind is a very fast-pace, creatively sexy read that I highly enjoyed and I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

XD

For some reason I enjoyed this volume more. Possibly because I was able to let go of my criticism and mostly just fly with it. It also made for a nice change to have such a very young couple. And in truth, they both do come across as adorably youthful.

Although I have to say, it’s best not to look at Ryan’s history and his education too closely.
Just don’t tell me Ryan is only eight years old. Please.

And wow. Okay. It’s rare enough that shifter books go into bestiality territory by having the characters have sex in shifted form. But to have one actually impregnate a real animal? … Wow. I’ve only come across this once before outside of myths or fairy tales, and that was in a YA novel, of all things.

Aside from content, the writing suffered from much the same as the previous two books. Here’s an excerpt from the start:

He looked back down at Whirlwind and saw that the bull was antsy. He was ready to get out there and show the crowd what he had.

Don’t tell us that! Show us how he paces and snorts and stuff and bumps against the gate.

But, as I said, I seem to have gotten used to it. So in the end it was an okay enough story. Really don’t know what to do about the rating. Maybe 2.5 would be most appropriate.

A cute story of a human with an unusual shifter - a bull shifter.
I couldn't stop snickering reading this, especially that the bull shifter had quite a high libido and ready to charge anytime.

I'm looking forward to another appearance of The Agency's agents on the next installment of this series!

3.5 stars for a good story. A great start as Whirlwind tosses another rider to the ground.
Includes secret crush, freinds to lover's, a bull with a temper, a 6 years flash back. A good story to read and a few dramas happen for them with life threatening dangers. An HEA ending to finish the book. I loved the first book and was intrigued by a bull shifter book. I was a little saddened that it didnt start at the beginning but it was included in the jump.

Caleb had his bulls in the PBR Event but Whirlwind was his best champion and his best freind, Ryan.

I will give this book a 4/5. It is about a bull shifter who has lived most of his life as a bull. But then he falls in love with the guy who trained him for the rodeo circuit. Now he want to try living as a human. But there are some bad people who want to kill the shifters. The two men will have to work through that problem before they can make a life together.

This second Shifters book was fun. Another mini-mystery wrapped up in a gay erotic romance. It's fun getting to know different types of shifters and having The Agency tied into each book, can't wait to read more!

This was certainly an interesting take on shifters. That Ryan's mother was an actual cow made for a certainly unusual twist, though I'm not sure how I actually feel about it. The story is very fast paced, but I think it still did okay in the story telling given the length.

In a Nutshell: Decent MM shifter romance though nothing outside the ordinary with either plot, characters or romance.

The Set Up: Ryan was born a bull shifter and lived his early years as a bull. Caleb’s mother sees the intelligence in Ryan’s eyes and buys the shifter to keep him safe. Caleb is shocked when the bull he’s been talking to suddenly shifts into a human. Now Ryan and Caleb are ready to begin a new chapter in their relationship but Ryan is kidnapped by shifter enemies.

Why I Read this Book: I read book three in this series and really liked it so went back to read the others.

What I Liked: I like the world set up here. The shifters are dual spirits with animals and some live their entire lives as their animal. The shifter enemies are the Knights who are part-fae, part-human. Then there are the mostly clueless humans. And lastly there is a mysterious Agency who are part-fae, part-human and protect the shifters. I liked the Agency and how they play big roles in each of the novellas, especially the yummy Agent Pope who has a vendetta against the Knights.

What I Also Liked: If I’m going to read erotic romance with people in their early twenties, then I want them both to be the same age and this is the case for Ryan and Caleb. They discover sex and their romance naturally together and I liked this earnest, heartfelt romance. I like that the erotic interludes aren’t the point of the story but add a little heat to the story. The romance is a tad simplistic but given that these are young guys without much life experience it seemed appropriate.

What I Didn’t Like: This isn’t an earthshattering romance but it’s good enough. The characters didn’t wow me with their development or uniqueness but they were likable enough.

IMO: This isn’t a stellar romance but it’s good enough

I’m really enjoying this series so far and this second story just hit a lot of great notes for me. I’ve really been into stories featuring the rodeo lately and while I wasn’t expecting that in this book, and it wasn’t a big part of the story, it was a nice surprise. While the story first introduces you to the main characters, Ryan and Caleb, in the present, it then backtracks a little bit to show you how they first met, when Caleb learned Ryan was a shifter and a couple of other early interactions. It was nice actually getting to see some of the events mentioned when the main characters were talking. :)

The pacing for the story was good and I liked the friends to lovers aspect (which was a little abrupt but not totally unexpected) but what I enjoyed the most was getting to see the Agency in action again. The little glimpse you got in the first book just made me insanely curious so it was great being able to see more of how they operated and, even better, Poe was back so that was a total win as far as I’m concerned. :D Besides a good story, there were some nice sex scenes but nothing so over the top as to overwhelm everything else and I appreciated that.

I liked this one, maybe a little more that the first book, but I am officially hooked on the series regardless; I look forward to checking out the next book. While I usually recommend reading a series in order, if you just wanted to skip right into this one you could do so without any issues; I found the story to be fairly self contained. If you enjoy paranormal stories featuring a shifter that isn’t the norm, you might want to check this one out.

I am kind of confused about Ryan's past. I mean, he's how old in human years? Yet, 8 years old as a bull. When Caleb got him he was 2 as a bull and Caleb was 15 years old.

Then there's the bestiality portion of this story. Ryan's mother was a cow and his father was a bull shifter. With that said, did his father stay with him on the ranch until puberty? I don't understand. That's a lot of years. Does puberty happen sooner for shifters? Was his father a man or a bull during this time?

I did like how Caleb created a relationship with Ryan in his shifted form before even knowing he was a shifter. He actually loved the bull. Talked to him for years, knowing he couldn't answer. It was charming.

I REALLY liked Caleb, a lot. I think I would have liked Ryan more if I got to know him more. I mean, how can he LIKE being treated like an animal. I mean, yeah, he is, but to have actual strangers riding him? Wouldn't he feel used? I think that's the part that got me the most. Yes, I get that he's a shifter, but to spend so much time as the animal can't be healthy, right??

I WANT MORE OF THE AGENCY!!!!

Overall, I didn't enjoy this one as much as Brian and Derek's story, but I did like it :)

There are 5 parts to the overall story and only 2 ( The Beginning and Scrolls) are out so far, which include 12 books - about 20 books will be in the total (see author's website for complete listing).

I have read them 2x now as more books have come out. Each book has it's own story but there is a back story that threads throughout them - I will wait until all the parts come out now to be able to complete the overall story before reading again.

Also, the next time I read the series, I will read it in chronological order of the stories, not in the order they were written. You can do either, but the books from earlier times tell the deeper underlining story of the scrolls, which is what keeps the series going since each book has it's own HEA.

Reviewed for Prism Book Alliance

It always takes me a little while to come to terms with a human/shifter mating. Maybe because I don't often read "other" shifters, but a human/shifter mating that was born of an animal to begin with, is just a little too much for my little pea brain to wrap itself around. As such, I was not predisposed to like Caleb and Ryan as a pairing.

This story was rather plain. In general all the emotions between Ryan and Caleb were really felt. I liked them as a couple, but for my liking it was to plain plotted. I wouldn't mind reading more about this created world and this Agency.

Barely 3. Not nearly as good as the first.
