The Manor

Rate this book
Ephram Korban was an admirer of the human creative spirit, dedicated to collecting art in its many forms--literature, photography, painting, and sculpture--before he took his own life. Nestled in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains stands the home he built as a retreat for artists to hone their craft, perfect their skills...perhaps even produce a masterpiece. Isolated from the outside world in the electricity-free mansion, artists gather to court their muses for six weeks, undisturbed.

Anna Galloway has no interest in art and even less in the people who produce it. Her sensibilities are more in tune with the realm beyond the physical, where the souls of the deceased reside and visions reveal secrets. She has included herself among the elite artistes in residence at Korban's retreat because she has seen the manor in her dreams--and believes Korban's ghost may be wandering its halls.

Now, a blue moon is on the rise in October, opening magical pathways to conjure up something unimaginable. Something feeding off the energies of those in the house. Something seeking everlasting life--at any cost...

From my Amazon review...

Where's the scare? Thought I would try a new author, and was very disappointed...a lot of build up to nothing...would not recommend this book to anyone. If you want to read something to keep you awake at night, try THE DEVIL IN GRAY by Grahamn Masterson or ETERNITY by Tamara Thorne. Great reads!

As a devotee of ghost stories (not "horror" stories, though), I thought I would enjoy this more than I did. Having the paperback cover compare the author to Stephen King should have warned me. (I am sure King gets paid by the word.)

This was an easy read, but I am not a fan of books that jump back and forth between multiple characters; I prefer straight-line stories that follow one set of characters throughout.

It wasn't a total waste, and I did manage to finish it (lots of skimming though.)

It had its moments. Some of the characters were well done, and the overall creepy feeling of the house and its supernatural entities was effective. I can't put my finger on exactly why this was a 3 instead of a 4 or 5, but something just barely missed here, and I can't honestly say what. I'm also a little irked at who lived and who didn't survive. Talk about twisted logic. But maybe he was aiming for realism, since the real world isn't always fair either. Anyway, it was a decent little pageturner and the author shows some real potential.

Nicholson's third novel is not only his best, but shows the most improvement and promise. This is a very well written book. When his storytelling catches up with his writing skills, this author will be quite dangerous. The ghost/spirit/revenge premise has been done before, but I loved the idea of an artist getaway to hone ones creativity. I enjoyed the characters and the atmosphere and look forward to Scott Nicholson's new book, The Home.

I found this book to be eerie, but not scary. The atmosphere is good. The story line is good. And on film, there were a couple of scenes that would probably steal your breath. Certainly worth reading, but don't worry about keeping all the lights on. You won't need anything more than your reading lamp.

I thought I understood what was going on with the relationships between some of the ghosts, but apparently not. The script just kind of ends, maybe leaving room for a sequel, but with no closure or finality.

I did not care for this novel. It took me a very long time to complete.

There's some creepy goings on at the isolated manor in the Appalachian Mountains. Good atmosphere and writing.
