A collection of contributions on conquerors, settlers and displaced: Germans in Eastern Europe after World War II. Particularly interesting is the third part of the book, recounting the fate of civilian Germans left behind. They suddenly did not live in Germany anymore, but in Poland, Czechoslovakia, the Soviet Union. Many were discriminated, attacked or killed; most were forced to move to the "new" Germany's (West and East Germany). After arrival, they were discriminated by their own people. In total, about 12 million displaced Eastern European Germans were eventually absorbed into the population of these two countries.
A collection of essays giving a well researched and comprehensive overview of German settlers in Eastern Europe and their fate after the two world wars. Full of insights and attempts to understand the moral issues in play.
