Rambles In Mammoth Cave was originally published in 1845. Alexander Clark Bullitt describes the cave as easily accessible, with comfortable local accommodations, and as offering safe and pleasurable cave trips for ladies and gentleman. The book provides beautiful descriptions of the sights in the cave that could be seen by visitors in 1844 and can still be seen by visitors today. It has been a source book for all future guidebooks and remains a most attractive souvenir for visitors who want to remember their trip into Mammoth Cave.
An excellent account of adventures in Mammoth Cave that have me wanting to return and spend more time exploring its caverns, rivers, and avenues.
Owen’s Review: 4/5 peanut butter sandwiches - I wasn’t sure about Mammoth Cave when we were there a few weeks ago, but now I want to go exploring once more since this book makes it sound like the coolest thing ever.
Wonderfully descriptive, took me back to Mammoth Cave!
If you're planning to visit Mammoth Cave, I recommend reading this twice - once before you go, and once when you return. The cave tours offered by NPS are excellent. Some sections of the tours were more difficult than others. Then, reading this book and thinking of women in long skirts, with dressy, slippery shoes instead of hiking boots... Yikes!
The book includes a foldout copy of the map of the cave drawn by Stephen Bishop. I don't think I'd be happy owning an e-copy of this, the map is too important.
My reading had come after my visit to the caves, and I find this reading reminds me of the majestic wonders of nature found below. This book is great in that it accomplished what it set out to do, for through my reading I have grown a yearning to see the caves once more.
What an interesting and inspiring fast read on a beautiful cave. Written in 1844, the book harkens of a distant past while describing scenes still present today. Perhaps the closest to time travel I will enjoy.
This was a pretty cool historical account of the Mammoth Cave. I enjoyed reading the writing style of the 1840s, and felt like I was on the cave tour with them.
Thoroughly enjoyed re-reading this book today on the plane and following along with the map included with the book. If you have ever visited the Mammoth Caves...this will take you back to most of the main tour and some of the other tours. Only, it was written in 1844. Loved the description and the fact they ATE food down in the caves!
This was very interesting to read, since I had just visited Mommoth Cave. It was fun to look at the map as I read through the book, and see how the tours of over 100 years ago compared to today.
