Maddersley-on-Mead, where a picture-perfect family is slaughtered in their own home, leaving a baby as the sole survivor. Miss Sanderson takes center stage this time as she takes on the guise of a cousin to find the killer. It gets more complicated as she learns that the Happy Family may not be so perfect after all. As she looks for the murderer's face amongst the resentful villagers, spurned courtiers and neurotic neighbors, little did she know how close she will come to danger.

I'm on a roll with this Robert Forsythe mysteries and this fourth one I find particularly good despite the grisly plot. I wasn't too keen with Miss Sanderson at the start of the series as I find it a bit tiresome that all the other characters seem to praise her at every turn, but here she stood out as a dedicated nosy Miss Marple without the knitting part. Very readable and yet this reminds me a lot of Caroline Graham and P.D. James with its psychological undertones and full-bodied characters.

Cozy little mystery. I think I think I'd rather have Forsyth the main investigator, but not a bad cozy.

You can feel the atmosphere in the village where Ms Sanderson goes undercover after the murders. Everyone is a suspect and for a lonely woman, that is not very reassuring...Nicely written.
