The Cor Chronicles #1

Blood and Steel

Rate this book
The Shining West, free from the yoke of the Loszian Empire, has long stood as a beacon of freedom, guarding its people from the evils of the Loszians. Aquis is the largest of the Western Kingdoms, ruled by its benificent Queen Erella, High Priestess to Garod, leader of the gods of light.

The son of a farmer in the bountiful kingdom Aquis, Cor Pelson had always been different. Shortly after he was born came the horrific coughing attacks, and his skin changed color to a gray reminiscent of the grave. He is a Dahken, a race the Loszian necromancers fear, reviled by the Western priests, and thought extinct by both.

As a child, strangers entered his life, even if only briefly, and drove home that there are those that would bend him to their wills. Frightened and determined to protect those he loves, Cor steals away from home. He finds that the world is not the good, safe place that his parents taught him of, but in fact is a cruel, brutal place where blood flows readily and the ability to protect himself is paramount.

He finds, even on the open sea, that those who would control the power within his blood follow him, intent on inflicting harm upon those around him. He must learn to tap the power within his blood to find his own path, take revenge and build a new world for his kind.

This book should have been great, i mean it contain the amount of bluntness and forthrightness in the hero handling of murder and killing, I mean the hero parent died literally in front of him and he could do nothing about it, this kind of event is what i starve for in most fantasies nowadays but the author has done the job poorly, this sensless killing didn't impact me as it should because i didn't care about his parents at all, while in most fantasies story the author develop the characters , i fantasies about their death and the impact it can cause on the story but here it didn't mean anything and that annoyed me.
Take ASOIF for exemple george got that amazing talent of making you care about them and then taking them away and i realise now after alot of reading that this talent is rare.
anyway back to the story, the world building is poor but not inexistant, i do not feel the vastness of this world, rather it feel narrow which lead to frustration though the like : why do i care about that world half of which are slaves, the other hald fodders.
the main character... well he's a race of his own which might explain some of his unrealistic endeavors but doesn't make me feel more attached to him, he remind me a little of Jorg which i ended up adoring but he's not up there.

Very Good Sword & Sorcery Tale

Parece has created a rich world of a mankind devolved from a technical civilization into a group of kingdoms, struggling, either towards conquest or towards freedom. The humans worship gods (there seem to be about seven or so) who can take an active role in religion and the affairs of men. All in all, a very well-imagined world dominated by both swords and sorcery.

I THINK THIS IS A VERY GOOD BOOK, THE FIRST IN A SERIES. IT IS ENTICING WORK.

First book by this author - will read more

Cor was born a normal child, a few days later he became ill, and when he recovered his skin had a pale gray tone. He was a Dahken- a person of the Blood Gods - reviled by all. Dahken Rael found him and taught him as much as he could.

This is the being of Cor’s story.

Blood and Steel begins the story of Cor Pelson. You see, Cor is a Dahken – a race of magical warriors long though dead by both the beneficent priests of the Shining West and the necromancers of the Loszian Empire. Shortly after he was born Cor changed – the coughing attacks came, and his skin changed to the gray of a corpse. He is different, and there were those who took notice. Cor comes to realize that there are those who would control the power in his blood. Frightened and determined to protect those he loves, Cor steals away from home. He quickly finds that the world is not what he thought it was – the world is not full of happy farmers in a bountiful kingdom, living in peace and freedom. It is in fact a cruel, brutal place where blood flows readily and the ability to protect himself is paramount. Those that would control the power in his blood follow him to the sea. Cor must accept that he is different, learn to unlock his strength and take revenge upon the Loszian necromancer who has wronged him.
The story is wonderful and engaging, and the characters make sense for the setting. The pace is fast - which I consider this novel's strongest feature. It grabs you right at Chapter 1 and takes you for a fast, hard thrill ride. The book (and the author I think) clearly lives for its action sequences and they're executed with wonderful detail. You see everything as it occurs. The main character probably would have lived a quiet life, but everyone seems to have designs on him and it pushes him to take matters into his own hands. Toward the end, he meets a woman who epitomizes this. Great Readin Everyone!

I had recently finished a replay of Dragon Age: Origins, and I went the Reaver/Berserker class, reading this right after blew me away. The Dahken combine 2 of my most favorite classes in that game.

In DA:O - Reavers terrorize their enemies, feast upon the souls of their slain opponents to heal their own flesh, and can unleash a blood frenzy that makes them more powerful as they come nearer to their own deaths. And of course, Berserkers, well they go crazy and dominate.

When I first read about the Dahken this was the first thing I thought of, and I freaking love it!

As one reviewer said, the beginning is a little slow, so if you can get by that this is one hell of a book. The action scenes are written in a way that you can visualize the anarchy these warriors cause. They are the the worlds most dangerous people - the Dahken are feared by all, yet very little is known about them.

I enjoyed reading about the history of the World too, the author came up with a interesting idea on how magic came to be and I loved it.

I can't wait to continue with Cor and company, going to start book 2 right away.

I, being someone who struggles to get into reading recently, thought this book was absolutely gripping all the way through. I haven't been more motivated to read a book in it's entirety in a long time. I always eventually finish books but this story line had me coming back for more as often as I could. Cor is a protagonist that anyone could cheer for and one of the Lady Characters you will meet is an absolute bamf! She is my favorite and not just because I'm a girl myself. Haha

It was a fun read! The characters were kind of underdeveloped but I found both books in this fantasy series that have been written so far to be entertaining enough to make up for that. Plenty of action and fast paced. Poor editing but for the price, I'm not complaining!
