There's a lot wrong with these comics. I can't quite put my finger on it. It's as though very talented high schoolers were put in charge. There are some clear problems in art, plotting, and storytelling -- particularly pacing.

The drawings seem to be lacking in weight. The action is confusing. The key moments seem rushed and there are too many of them.

By this point, it's clear that the SatAM concept has already been pushed to its breaking point. It's unbelievable, reading this, to imagine that it goes on for another ten-plus years. Indeed, this book points to the essential plotlessness of the Sonic universe. This makes a lot of sense. Platformers -- outside some Metroidvania ones and some others harm the platforming experience -- don't have time for world building. And their worlds often don't make sense. E.g., http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpP_BK....

It's not irredeemably broken and it's not painful. This slim little volume prompts the question: Could it be done well?

Abstractly the answer should always be yes. It's possible to tell a great Superman story even though every reader should ask: "Why should I care about this guy? He feels no pain and nothing can kill him, so therefore he's essentially a story device for action sequences." http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/x-m...

Anyway, enough ruminating. The money here is in the license. They got it. It's there.

We're winding up to the years where the comic began going downhill for a long time (I feel the "Sonic Adventure" supposed adaption was the story that ruined the comic for years to come!). The stories are still fairly decent, but the artwork seemed to become "fast" and "haphazard" by this point. If you're a modern fan who never read these issues when they were originally published, the "Archives" series is a good way to read the series streamlined and catch up to the backgrounds that the comic is resurrecting in stories now.

Sonic and Tails finally catch up to Ixis Naugus. How did they find him? I guess they had a magic tracker the whole time, though it didn't tell them when he was a cloud... OK, I'll stop asking questions.

They reach a snowy tundra and meet the Overlander Nate Morgan who appears to be a midget version of Morgan Freeman, and his yeti friend. There is some decent world building here as we find out that Nate helped invent the power rings, or at least harness their energy. They then have to fight Ixis so Sonic and Tails become hyper versions of themselves, with lots of rings and no emeralds...

They really needed to sit down and work out the basic rules of this universe because it's probably the most contradictory series I've ever read. Everyone has a completely different idea as to how it all works, so it changes constantly.

That said these were decent issues, and would have garnered another star if it wasn't for the completely lackluster ending. Clearly no one involved in this comic has any idea how to end a story. Sonic and Tails get drained from using too much power, pass out, and forget the whole thing ever happened. Nate Morgan happens to have a Power Ring in his eye that creates a laser that gets rid of Naugus. Why didn't he use it sooner? No one knows, but I'm really tired of these lazy endings. This series keeps showing promise, then keeps reminding us why these guys never wrote for other series.

Sonic and Tails face off against Ixis Naugus, a crazy wizard hybrid. They also find Nate Morgan living in a cave, and he claims that Mobius had blamed him for the problems caused even though he wasn't behind them. Also, his orange yeti friend Eddy sacrifices himself to save the professor. Great dealio but I don't know why I'm reading these out of order.
