The most terrifying night in American history was only the beginning! The year is 1969, and though the risen dead had ravaged the eastern seaboard a year earlier, two thousand miles of distance bring comfort to a handful of young and carefree “weekend warriors.” Eager to leave their tensions behind, they head out into the Californian dunes for three days of hot sun, dune buggies, and skimpy bikinis. But the pristine white sands will soon run red, as a secret even more gut-wrenching than flesh-eating ghouls coes to light! Collecting the entire “Death Valley” story arc by horror comic legend Mike Wolfer, with an added bonus story set in the Louisiana bayou, where the psychological threat of the coming undead hordes pits survivor against survivor!
So in this volume the group flees from Philly to Cali and takes refuge in the desert. However, they run afoul of a cult (obviously loosely based on the Manson Family) that thinks the zombie plague is something biblical. We have the usual graphic violence and nudity, which doesn't really fit the theme of the original movie but does fit some of the later 80s sequels. Overall not bad but it doesn't really capture the spirit of the movie. If you just like zombie horror in general this is a cool series, but don't expect the feeling of a true sequel.
Well written, and nicely illustrated third volume of NOTLD. This time the horror action takes place among the sand dunes of California. Two survivors of the Pennsylvania zombie attacks find themselves at the mercy of a Manson-type cult leader and his beautiful, but deadly followers who use the hungry dead in their human sacrifices. Highly recommended.
The art in the main story is a lot better than the earlier comics, but the story is just a little boring. The second story (only an issue long compared to the 4 issues of the main one) is a lot better, but not enough to make up for the slog of the first. The main issues I had with this book was the creator's propensity for drawing women naked/nearly so at every opportunity, even when it wasn’t necessary, and all the male characters looking exactly the same: like professional bodybuilders. This whole aspect really cheapened the book for me.
Taking place a year after the last volume the characters who survived the first two volumes run from DC to California. While they deal with the undead they also have to deal with a death worshipping cult. It was a solid ending to a cool series .
I usually love a good zombie comic but this was just felt like an excuse to illustrate a ton of T&A and throw in a heaping helping of violence against women. Not worth the money or the time.
Lazy review time: Russo + Nudity + Zombies = Pretty much this entire series of prequel/sequels. I have said enough about them already, but I always like to write reviews so people get an idea of what I am looking at from inside my wee little head. By this point, the undead horse has been shot in the head and left to rot...
A continuation of the graphic novel series imagining the Zombie Apocalypse breaking out in 1968 and reoccurring all over the country in different installments. This time a bunch of hippies in Death Valley encounter an apocalyptic Manson-family like cult whose "messiah" is eager to bring on the end of days. Not for the squeamish!
The story is very similar to the Governor's character in Walking Dead but with added hillbillies and nudity. It's an ok read, but feels very rushed and lacks the twists and dialog that the fist 2 volumes had. If you want to complete your NotLD trade library, then this is for you. If you want to read something good, look for something else.
